    Summary

    This three-week Chinese immersion program will allow 48 participants grades, 3-5 and 6-8 to attain a novice-mid
    proficiency level in Chinese. During the six hour days, students will engage in dynamic task-based
    language learning, practicing martial arts, calligraphy, cooking, and Chinese ink painting. The theme Exploring the Regions of China will explore the four regions of China:, North, South, East, and West. Students will learn about the geography including flora and fauna, climate, clothes, monuments, famous people, and foods in thematic units. A field trip to Concordia Language Villages Chinese Village, Sen Lin Hu, will provide a rich exchange of activities and an opportunity for interpersonal communication.

    Summary

    HEB ISD’s “STARTALK: Better Together” language academy will provide three weeks / 72 hours of student-centered learning and instruction in Hindi, Arabic, or Chinese to rising 6th and 7th graders, and intermediate level practice for 8th-11th grade students, as well as exposure to all three languages. Projected enrollment for Arabic, Hindi, and Chinese is 50 students per language, comprising 30 novice 6th and 7th graders and 20 intermediate students. At the end of this academy, we expect rising 6th and 7th grade students to achieve novice low-to-mid level oral proficiency in their language of choice and upper grades students to achieve intermediate low-to-mid level. We anticipate that approximately 90% of our 7th grade students will continue in the language course in the fall at our district. For intermediate students, we expect their scores on the IB exams to reflect the benefits of additional language practice and cultural experience.

    Summary

    The Startalk funded Chinese Dragon's Math Maze - Building Community through Kindness Program will enable approximately 100 children from the City of Springfield and some surrounding communities to receive introductory as well as ongoing instruction in Chinese Language and Culture from grades K-12 . The program will run daily from 8:30 to 2:30 for 15 days, for a total of 90 instructional contact hours from Monday, July 9th through Friday, July 27th, 2018. A pre-program, baseline assessment will determine students' prior knowledge and will be used for appropriate placement of students. While high school students will participate in the online Lingua Folio assessment, a culminating student performance activity for ALL students will serve as a summative outcome indicating mastery of math content and skills, as well as knowledge of language and culture.

    Summary

    STARTALK WeChat: Chinese School Edition is a non-residential 3-week, 90 contact hour Chinese language program for rising 6th graders through rising college freshman in the greater Charlotte, N.C. area. Applying students should have less than 2 years studying Mandarin Chinese in formal or informal contexts (including speaking Chinese at home). Students will work in classes with small teacher to student ratios (1:5). The program theme, WeChat, is the most popular Chinese social media application and is used by over a billion people worldwide. Use of this app throughout the program will enable students to interact with their peers and teachers in a variety of familiar ways (sharing pictures, instant messaging, posting statuses about what they are doing/how they are feeling, etc.). The program will also include a field trip in which students will enjoy the opportunity to apply their new knowledge in multiple settings, experiencing Chinese culture right in their own backyards! The program will culminate in a shared celebration of student learning open to parents and siblings. Students will design and manage activity stations to show off all of their new language and cultural knowledge--by teaching what they know to their parents, siblings and friends!

    The Fauquier County 2018 STARTALK program includes 12 instructional days beginning July 9, 2018 and ending July 26, 2018 with total instructional time equaling 65 hours including extended day field trips. New and returning students who are rising fifth to ninth graders will be accepted into differentiated classes with expected novice-mid to intermediate-low proficiency levels. Our program theme will be "My Journey" and will explore authentic practices and products related to traveling to locations that speak the target language. Students will embark on their own journey where they will be able to greet people they meet and exchange information about their trip with others.

    Summary

    2018 STARTALK Turkish Summer Camp (The Program), organized by Ace It Education Inc., d.b.a. Turkish Cultural Center Boston (TCC), will serve 30 ‘heritage learners’ of the Turkish language in grades 3 through 8. The target Turkish proficiency levels of the students are intermediate mid and intermediate high. The program will offer 84 hours of instructional time in a well-structured classroom environment in 3 weeks in July 2018. The outcome of the Program will be to teach students the value of bilingualism and excel in their “heritage language” by better understanding and presenting new vocabulary with nuances.

    Summary

    We will have two locations for the program and will use Baldwin location for this year program. This location is Young Scholars of Western Pennsylvania Charter School (YSWPCS). We are going to enroll 40 students in the program. They will be 20 students in 3-5 grades and 20 students in 6-8 grades. There will be one program director, one instructional leader, one consultant, four teachers, four teacher aides and one IT Manager will be working for this program. The program will be for 15 days and 5 hours instruction will be provided for each day. Teachers and teacher aides will be provided a lot of support by the director, instructional leader, and consultant. Our already diverse student population, a comprehensive marketing plan, and our research-based model of education will guarantee ample enrollment and diversity of participants to the program. Our School Board is already committed to teaching world languages and support for the growth of language teaching programs similar to STARTALK Language Program.

    Summary

    Now in it’s 10th year, the STARTALK: Queens University of Charlotte Summer Institute in Chinese is a three-week, 95 hour non-residential language immersion program for rising 7th graders through recently graduated 12th graders that takes place from 9:00AM to 3:00PM July 23th to August 10th with lunch and snack provided. Student-centered learning will occur in an immersion setting using a variety of authentic materials and supporting technologies that will prepare students to engage in meaningful intercultural communication centered around our theme of "Holidays and Celebrations." Students will develop proficiency from the Novice to Intermediate levels and the skills and motivation needed to participate in optional but highly recommended community activities after the face-to-face program, which they will the discuss with their Skype partners in China. 60 students will be admitted in a competitive application process that does not require prior knowledge of the language. Undergraduate college credit (4 hours) is granted upon successful completion of the face-to-face segment.

    Summary

    This two-week STARTALK Student Program (from July 12 to July 25) plans to recruit 45 middle school and high school students from Grades 6 to 12 in Rhode Island and neighboring states. Students will attend six-hours (9:00am-3:00pm) daily activities consisting of three hours of language classes, two hours of cultural workshops, and a one-hour complimentary lunch, for a total of 60 contact hours during 10 days. Students will be taught by STARTALK trained experienced Chinese teachers utilizing the most effective language instruction principles. The theme-based curricula are aligned with the National Standards of Foreign Language Education. The program will be held in classrooms equipped with the state of the art technology on Bryant campus. Based on a pre-program language proficiency evaluation, students will be placed into classes in three proficiency levels: Novice Low, Novice Mid, and Intermediate. A field trip to Boston Museum of Fine Arts and Chinese grocery store with the authentic Chinese lunch is scheduled during the program. No previous language learning experience is required.

    Summary

    The Asia Institute Crane House Mandarin Program is a summer language program focused on providing high quality Chinese language and cultural learning to 50 rising middle school and high school students in the Louisville, Kentucky region who range from having very little or no experience to being proficient with Mandarin.

    During the program students are immersed in Chinese language and culture through projects and group activities to achieve a minimum of a novice level of proficiency or better. The program will last two weeks and include 10 days of six hours of instruction for a total of 60 hours of immersive instruction with activities that include traditional arts such as paper folding and calligraphy, traditional dances, tai chi, and music. They will also explore contemporary China through its cities, growing economy, environment and the arts. Students will use their own Kentucky heritage as a lens to compare and contrast both cultures, then demonstrate their knowledge in a final program for educators, family and friends.

    There will be an additional 16 hours of online follow-up classes in the Fall.
