    Summary

    The Brockton Public Schools Startalk Unidos na Ciências program will provide engaging and rigorous STEM language learning in Portuguese full-immersion setting for students entering kindergarten through grade three. This is a bifurcated program, with elementary students in grades one through engaging in a two-week science exploration camp in July, and entering kindergartens participating in a two-week program in August. All students in this program participate in the Unidos Portuguese Dual Language Immersion program during the school year, with entering kindergartners being exposed to organized Portuguese language instruction for the first time. Students in the Unidos program in grade kindergarten through grade three have a novice Portuguese proficiency ranging from Novice-Low to Novice-High. In Unidos em Ciências, students will engage in grade level science standards, contextualized within the Lusophone world. Unidos em Ciências unifying theme is “Where in the Portuguese Speaking World”, with each grade contextualizing it for their curriculum standards. Kindergarten will focus on living things, basic needs, and the environment. Grade one will focus on space and motion. Grade two will focus on plants and animal characteristics. Grade three will focus on matter, land forms, and maps. Program goals will include interpretive communication, interpersonal communication, and presentational communication, with targeted outcomes for each grade. The program in July for first through third graders will run for ten days for five hours each day for a total of 50 instructional hours. The program for incoming kindergartners in August will run for three hours per day for two weeks for a total of 30 instructional hours.

    Summary

    ACA 2019 STARTALK Chinese Summer Camp: Earth is Our Home will provide 80 K-5 students at University Park Elementary School with a Chinese language, culture and STEM integrated learning program for 91 instructional hours over 3 weeks in summer (June 24, 2019 to July 11, 2019, field trip: July 12, 2019) and additional 20 hours in an extension program in fall 2019, a total of 111 instructional hours. Students will receive technology-enhanced language instruction organized about different weather conditions around the world when attending "Weather and Me" camp in China. After attending the program, students will be able to greet each other and exchange simple information in Chinese, and build lasting interest to continue with their Chinese learning.

    Summary

    The West Virginia Department of Education, in partnership with Monongalia County Schools, will offer the STARTALK: WVDE Chinese Immersion Summer Camp program for 90 elementary students through a ten-day instructional summer program with follow-up activities throughout the year (approximately 90 hours of total instruction). Monongalia County students who will enroll in grades 1-5 will have the opportunity to engage in a thematic and content-based summer camp experience in Morgantown, WV. Students will develop or advance their initial Chinese proficiency as they engage with Mandarin speaking instructors and facilitators. The focus of the 2019 camp will be "Learning Chinese: It's out of this world!" Lessons and activities will focus on the solar system.

    Summary

    The STARTALK Student Summer Bridging Academies in Portland offer a three-week intensive language and culture learning experience for 100 K-5 students of Chinese and 40 K-5 students of Russian who are currently enrolled in Portland Public Schools’ Dual Language Immersion programs, will be entering grade K, or plan late entry into a program in Fall 2019. The Academies provide 48 hours of instruction based on the theme of “Bridging Cultures through Cuisine.” Student outcomes target a one proficiency sublevel gain, from Novice to Intermediate and, for struggling students, a boost going into the school year. As part of a combined STARTALK program that additionally offers a Teacher Academy, students will be exposed to a curriculum infused by the STARTALK-Endorsed Principles for Effective Teaching and Learning and help solidify Portland Public Schools contribution to a pipeline of students enrolled in the study of critical languages.

    Summary

    The purpose of the CAIS STARTALK Elementary Immersion Program is to provide continuity for retention, enhanced learning, and reinforcement of Chinese language and culture skills to a constituency of San Francisco Unified School District and student who are studying in similar immersion models that would otherwise not be able to access such an opportunity. As a result of participating in the summer program, students will be confident of their language capabilities and enjoy learning about Chinese culture in a fun environment. Students who have been identified as struggling during the school year have the chance to reinforce their learning. We are targeting twelve students per grade, 1st to 5th grade inclusive for two three week sessions for a total of one hundred fifty students and two hundred and ten instructional hours.

    Summary

    The LMU 2019 Mandarin Student Summer Immersion Program is based on ACTFL Standards-Standards for Foreign Language Learning and Preparing for the 21st Century, as well as aligned with the Common Core, Visual/ Performing Arts, and Physical Education Standards for California Public Schools. Expected program outcomes are that students will be able to: 1) perform Chinese folk art dancing, sing, recite Chinese poetry, complete and describe hands-on culture, art and craft projects; 2) Guide family/community members through a market-place simulation during a culminating experience representative of this year’s theme, Discovery through the Virtual Journey along the Silk Road; 3) Integrate Chinese language and cultural learning through the Virtual Journey by learning proverbs about travel/journey, their meanings and morals, and engage in interdisciplinary instruction with language arts, math and social studies. This program targets 128 students from Castelar Elementary School and neighboring sites currently providing Mandarin Dual Language Programs. We will hold 8 simultaneous class sessions and students will participate for 4 instructional hours per day, 5 days a week, for two weeks totaling 40 student contact hours.

    Summary

    Our STARTALK camp serves 80 students from Anchorage area schools in grades 1-8, mostly at the Novice-Low proficiency level with some at Novice-Mid. Twenty of the students are from our second grade immersion program and will serve as ”language models” in the sessions. The camp provides 55 instructional hours at 5.5 hours per day. An afterschool Chinese intensive program at Scenic Park operates three hours/week for six weeks into the 2019-2020 school year, serving up to 40 students, some of whom attended camp. Student outcomes include: increased Chinese language skills, increased knowledge of and appreciation for Chinese culture, and intention to continue Chinese studies through secondary school.

    2019 STARTALK Turkish Summer Camp (The Program), organized by Ace It Education Inc., d.b.a. Turkish Cultural Center Boston (TCC), will serve 33 ‘heritage learners’ of the Turkish language in grades 2 through 6. The target Turkish proficiency levels of the students are intermediate mid and intermediate high. The program will offer 84 hours of instructional time in a well-structured classroom environment in 3 weeks in July 2019.     Summary

    This three-week program will engage 120 mostly heritage speakers of Portuguese, in grade one through grade eight, in 75 hours of age-and-stage appropriate language instruction around the theme "A trip through Three Portuguese-Speaking Regions: Portugal, Brazil and the Azores Islands". Student proficiency levels will range from Novice to Intermediate. The expected outcomes will be that all students 1) increase Portuguese proficiency levels by at least one level, 2) increase Portuguese cultural awareness, appreciation and knowledge, 3) increase interest in other Portuguese language learning programs throughout the school year within educational institutions and the community.

    Summary

    The Chinese Language and Culture Academy is a 15-day, non-residential program running from July 1 to July 20, 2019, at the State University of New York, College at Oswego. The program will recruit a total of 50 students ranging from the 2nd to the 12th grade. The three-week program will provide a total of 90 instructional hours at six hours per day with a program theme “Let’s Go to China.” Depending on their entry level, students are expected to advance their Chinese language proficiency to novice-mid and novice-high levels by the end of program. There will be five follow-up cultural workshops to promote cultural awareness during the 2019-20 school year.
