Participants will be placed in age-appropriate classes ranging from novice to intermediate level, based on their pre-program informal Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) assessment. Program's major goals will be to develop Hindi language competence of all participants by at least one higher sub level in three modes of communication. Participants will have the opportunity to develop language skills, and cultural competence by exploring program's curriculum contents based on the theme 'Me and My World- Unity in Diversity', and World Readiness Standards for Learning Languages. Differentiated instruction, intentional scaffolding to build Hindi literacy skills, formative and performance assessments will guide and motivate learners to self-monitor and grow their language skills. Theme based games, competitions, multimedia projects and hands-on native visual and performing arts projects will provide opportunities to all language learners with varied needs to engage in meaningful communication, create and present collaborative products for peer assessment and self reflection. The program will also provide continued Hindi language and culture learning opportunity to learners during its 20 week online-blended session (September 2018- March 2019).

    Summary

Yuva Hindi Sansthan, in partnership with North PennSchool District, proposes its sixth YHS STARTALK Hindi Language and Culture Program 2018 from June 18-July 6 to teach Hindi to 40 K-8 students of ages 8 to 13. We will develop three levels of curricula for two Novice and one Intermediate ranges of ACTFL proficiency guidelines under the overarching overarching theme, 'My virtual trip to India', divided into three sub-themes, 'food, festival and places of various regions of India' to provide information in chunks and recycle them. By end of the units Novice level learners will be able to do basic tasks, such as, identifying characters and events and presenting in culturally appropriate manner while Intermediate students will pair and share, compare and contrast information with their own experiences and ideas in USA. Our instructors will receive program specific professional development training under the guidance of a pedagogy expert and a K-8 literacy expert in the pre-program period. A structured post-program follow up plan will be implemented to help students sustain and improve their skills.
