    Summary

    YHS STARTALK Hindi Language and Culture Program 2017, a 3-week, 105 hours project based language immersion program for 40 First to 8th graders, to be organized in collaboration with North Penn School District, PA, at Nash Elementary School, Harleysville, PA, from July 24 to August 11, 2017, is focused on the theme, ''Celebrating India: Cuisine and Living Arts’', providing opportunities for students to use the language for a variety of real life purposes.
    The program, based on ACTFL proficiency guidelines and the World Readiness Standards for Language Learning, aims to train young learners perform basic functions and tasks in culturally appropriate manner and explore ideas and issues in the language and culture in order to construct their own meaning and purpose.
    We follow STARTALK endorsed principles for effective learning and teaching while training students learn, imagine, describe, share information about real life situations through 100 percent exposure in the target language.
    By end of the program students will be able to handle simple communicative tasks and social situations with increased quantity and quality of speech; communicate in culturally appropriate manner; understand and comprehend many requests and courtesy expressions; read simple texts with connected sentences with increased understanding and describe in simple language some familiar and unfamiliar real life situations producing varieties of evidences of learning.
    An online follow up learning program during the post program months will be implemented to help learners sustain and improve their skills and continue learning Hindi and experiencing its culture.

    Summary

    This program will offer 60 elementary students and exciting and fun science-oriented summer immersion three-week experience. It is open to K-5 students in San Mateo County, California. Students will be divided into three classes of 20 students based on their grade levels (K-1, 2-3, 4-5). At the end of the program, students will be able to communicate with each other, their family, and members of the community, in Chinese. In addition to engaging in hands-on fun science activities related to the exploration of DNA and genetics, field trips will give the students the opportunity to visit a real science laboratory at Stanford University and to meet with other scientists, and all the students will be able to bring home with them a sample of DNA that they isolated themselves from strawberries as well as a life-long love of and interest in science.

    Summary

    The STARTALK Student Summer Bridging Academies in Portland offer a three-week intensive language and culture learning experience for 90 K-5 students of Mandarin Chinese and 45 K-5 students of Russian who are currently enrolled in Portland Public Schools’ Dual Language Immersion programs, will be entering grade K, or plan late entry into a program in fall 2017. The Academies provide 90 hours of instruction based on the theme of “Bridging” physical spaces, as presented in a STEAM curriculum focused on bridge design and engineering, and on bridging spaces between culture and people, embodied by song, dance and martial arts or gymnastics. Student outcomes target a one proficiency level, from Novice to Intermediate and, for struggling students, a boost going into the school year. A separate four-week Academy for 24 High School students of Mandarin offers 90 hours of instruction through a blended online/community based curriculum meant to move them from Intermediate to Advanced proficiency, providing a “bridge” from High School to a university Flagship language program. As part of a combined STARTALK program that additionally offers a Teacher Academy, students will be exposed to a curriculum infused by the STARTALK-Endorsed Principles for Effective Teaching and Learning and help solidify Portland Public Schools contribution to a pipeline of students enrolled in the study of critical languages.

    Summary

    The 2017 STARTALK Paint Branch Chinese STEAM and Culture Summer Academy will offer 60 elementary novice students an intense but fun and innovative science and culture-oriented summer immersion three-week experience for 94 instructional hours. It is open to all students currently in grades kindergarten to fifth in Prince George's County, Maryland and its neighboring areas. Students will be divided into three classes of 20 students according to their grade levels. Based on the theme,"From Seeds to Table", students will be able to make healthy choices, create colorful salads, demonstrate the understanding of where ingredients are from as well as basic nutrition. We will also introduce certain common Chinese vegetables and dishes. Hands-on activities will range from growing healthy food to exploring Chinese arts and crafts. There are two field trips planned for the camp.

    Summary

    The StarTalk funded Chinese Dragon's Math Maze - Building Community through Kindness Program will enable approximately 102 children from the City of Springfield and some surrounding communities to receive introductory as well as ongoing instruction in Chinese Language and Culture from grades K- . The program will run daily from 8:30 to 2:30 for 15 days, for a total of 90 instructional hours.
    A pre-program, baseline assessment will determine students' prior knowledge and will be used for appropriate placement of students. While 6th, 7th, and 8th, and 9th graders will participate in the online
    Lingua Folio assessment, a culminating student performance activity for ALL students will serve as a summative outcome indicating mastery of math content and skills, as well as knowledge of language and culture.

    Summary

    The “STARTALK STEM-Integrated Chinese Summer Program" at Hope Chinese Charter School (HCCS) will engage 64 rising-grade K-6 students, proficiency levels ranging from beginner to Intermediate-high, in a Chinese immersion environment for four weeks (95 instructional hours) through a series of integrative and interdisciplinary language learning experience with STEM subjects and activities.
    "Welcome to Panda Panpan’s Bamboo Garden!" is the theme for the program where the Panda Panpan, a fun and fictional character, will help the students walk through a variety of topics, such as All about Panpan (life facts of panda, personal information and daily activities), Panpan’s Bamboo Garden (edible and non-edible plants, food, animals and home/school community), Panpan’s Friends in the World (world geography, customs and traditions, and plants in different countries), and Help Panpan Protect Her Home (Environment and conservation for our home and the earth).
    At the end of the program, the students will accomplish or will maintain their Chinese language skills at the target proficiency levels, and achieve all the program learning goals in interpretive, presentational, and interpersonal modes of communication.

    Summary

    This program is a four-week intensive program that is designed to move students forward in their Chinese language proficiency development. It incorporates learners from grades 1-12 from the Novice to the Intermediate-low levels. In grades 1-6, the students experience a content-related FLES program that introduces them to Chinese language and culture. In grades 7-12, the students are placed according to their previous learning experience in level 1-4 classes. There will be approximately 40 students at the elementary level and 40 at the middle/high school levels for a total of 51 instructional hours for elementary and 105 hours for secondary students. The program will run from June 28 - July 21, 2017.

    Summary

    Huayuan Chinese Academy’s “STARTALK STEM-Integrated Chinese Learning Program” will immerse 45 rising 2nd through 5th graders in a Chinese language and culture environment for a total of 91 instructional hours over 3 weeks, June 26-July 14, 2017, followed by a 10-week fall Extension Program. The curriculum is constructed around the storyline of the fictional character Water Baby’s fun life, magic show, and adventures, with the STEM-based theme “Explore Water, an Essential Element of Life.” The curriculum integrates hands-on linguistic, cultural, and scientific activities, all designed based on the World-Readiness Standards for Learning Languages. At the program's end, students will be able to greet each other, exchange simple information about themselves and their family members, as well as topics related to three states of water, water cycle, and water pollution, and follow simple steps in Chinese for scientific experiments.

    Summary

    The Pushkin Summer Institute (PSI) at UW-Madison attracts academically serious high school students from underrepresented communities to its intensive 6-week program in Russian. PSI offers 25-30 hours of intensive classroom instruction weekly, in addition to a well-developed, integrated extracurricular program that allows students to put their Russian skills into practice in a variety of situations. PSI participants will be 30 rising seniors with at least one year of Russian instruction from secondary schools with majority Hispanic/Latino and African-American populations: Pritzker College Prep (Chicago, IL), The Noble Academy (Chicago, IL), and West High (Anchorage, AK). Our target proficiency goals are to advance students from Novice Low/ Novice Mid to Novice High (speaking, listening, writing) and Intermediate Low (reading). Upon returning to their schools, students continue Russian instruction and act as mentors to their fellow students; renewal of our NSLI-Y-funded project will continue our second summer sequence of a six-week study abroad program in Latvia.
