    Summary

    This program provides two two-week sessions for up to 15 total teachers to learn to deliver instruction and assess student learning in a standards-based instructional program at the K-12 level. The classes meet every day for 12 days, seven hours a day (84 total hours of direct instruction), and include a Workshop on Cooperative Teaching and a workshop on the Modified Oral Proficiency Interview (MOPI) during the weekends. The outcomes of the program will be found in an e-portfolio and include: micro-teaching lessons in the co-located student program (on coaching and on assessment), a reflective journal on participants’ learning and classroom observations, a final reflective paper detailing the student progress they saw and their personal thoughts on their classroom work, and a plan for implementing the newly acquired skills during their regular school program. The skills and knowledge that participants gain in this program are directly transferred to the co-located student program and to their teaching during the academic year. Many teachers return to the program as a way of continuing their professional development because every year we differentiate the courses according to the expressed needs and wishes of previous participants.

    The IU LCTL STARTALK Professional Development Program will prepare participants to develop lesson plans using Backward Curriculum Design with performance assessment in the three modes of communication. The program will also train participants to integrate language, culture and content in the language classroom through micro-teaching sessions and how to create a learner centered classroom. Twelve participants who are either new instructors or who have not had any formal training in language pedagogy will be selected to permit adequate opportunity for teaching demonstrations. The program will be a total of three-weeks, and 90 instructional hours, of which 10 hours will be devoted to on-line training and 80 hours will be spent at the residential face-to-face program in Bloomington, Indiana. These hours include some of the hours that the instructors will spend with the participants on an individual basis during the evening curriculum clinic session to attend to individual differences and challenges.

    Assessment is critical to language teaching, and proficiency-based assessment can have positive influences on curriculum planning and implementation. The ACTFL MOPI workshop provides an opportunity for instructors to learn how to assess their students' oral proficiency and reflect on realistic outcomes for their students.     This program will enroll 20 participants who teach in higher education, with a variety of language teaching experiences and backgrounds. Participants will learn about the ACTFL Guidelines and how to apply these for goal-setting, assessment and self-assessment to improve teaching and learning, The first part of the workshop is an online course that provides a background on the ACTFL Guidelines and ACTFL Oral Proficiency Interview. The second part is a face-to-face workshop on the ACTFL OPI and a focus on classroom applications. The third part involves regular follow-up with participants during Fall 2019 and Winter 2020 on the influences of the workshop on teaching, learning and assessment.

    Participants will accrue approximately 35 hours, including up to 10-14 pre-session hours, 21 hours during the face-to-face workshop and 4-6 hours in completing the surveys and follow on interviews.

    The STARTALK Multi-State Pathways to Teaching Institute focuses on closing the gap for heritage school teachers by creating a Personalized Learning Plan (PLP) to earn state certification in order to be placed during the 2019-2020 school year in a K-12 public school classroom as an alternative entry or provisionally licensed teacher. This teacher training program recruits and supports up to 50 prospective teachers in 10 targeted STARTALK languages to address the critical need for K-12 language programs in Virginia, North Carolina, and Georgia, as well as a limited number of Spanish teachers to serve in dual language/immersion programs in those states. The Institute design includes 75 hours of instruction delivered online and face-to-face in four stages through a variety of learning experiences: Stage 1 Pre-Institute (6 hours online; June 12-July 17); Stage 2 Summer Institute (45 hours on-site; July 24-31); Stage 3 Post-Institute (24 hours over a seven-month period, August 2019 - February 2020); and finally Stage 4 Extended Institute (additional individual work as needed to complete certification requirements, will be outlined in each participant’s PLP). This Institute ensures that teachers are coached and prepared to meet the licensing requirements of the state where they will be teaching and enter the classroom as effective educators with the skills to plan, deliver, and assess instruction using the STARTALK-Endorsed Principles.

    The STARTALK Chinese Teacher Retreat is a three-week, 120 hour teacher program, with an emphasis on integrating culture and implementing technology into language teaching, for twelve teachers of Chinese of either novice or intermediate level. The first week will be online and asynchronous, the second and third weeks will be held at NDSU in Fargo, North Dakota. Participants will interact with instructors and each other, receive MOPI training and visit Concordia Language Villages Chinese Village, Sen Lin Hu during the second week. The third week, participants will develop curriculum for their micro-teaching experience and spend the day in the student program, practicing their new techniques and receiving feedback. Participants will be able to articulate and practice various criteria from the TELL Modules: Planning, The Learning Experience, Learning Tools and Performance and Feedback, collecting their evidence in PULSAR, an online portfolio.
    Participants will stay in the NDSU Mathew Living Learning Center https://www.ndsu.edu/reslife/residence_hall_information/mathew_living_le... It is a state of the art conference facility. Classes will be held in the same center as the accommodations. Breakfast and a Chinese lunch are provided M-F. There is a kitchenette in the studio apartment.     This blended STARTALK program will be a residential summer institute (8 days) with a pre-institute (8 days) asynchronous online module for 20 secondary Chinese language teachers, totaling 60 contact hours. The primary focus of the program is developing professional and program sustainability through the incorporation of effective and engaging learner-centered educational technology. Participants will work with experts and master teachers to learn both theory and practice in three different strands: flipped learning, multi-media learning, and learning outside of the classroom. Most travel expenses and all meals and lodging are covered by the program. Optional three graduate credit hours in Teacher Education are available at the participant's expense.     The STARTALK-Penn Chinese Language Teacher Advancement Program is a teacher enrichment program to provide STARTALK-approved training to fifteen K-16 Chinese language teachers for career advancement. Held at the beautiful campus of University of Pennsylvania, this two-week, 63 instructional hour face-to-face program will be from July 21 to August 2nd, 2019 each day from 9 am to 4 pm. The program will offer Penn expert discussions on China's Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), China's history of interactions in Central Eurasia, nationalism and Chinese minorities, ecological and environmental issues relating to the BRI, as well as pedagogy training, material development and micro-teaching. The program also features video editing training, a field trip to a Philadelphia high school and workshop in the Penn Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology. This partial residential program offers travel funds to 10 STARTALK participants to cover housing for 10 out-of-state participants during the program; Pennsylvania participants will receive ACT 48 hours toward re-certification and career advancement. After the program, participating teachers will have new teaching materials that are World-Readiness Standard-based with innovative culture content and technology components, to use in the new school year. Experiences gained from this Belt & Road Initiative themed program will open great opportunities for language teachers to connect the subject to K-12 courses, such as Economics, World History, World Geography, Environment Study, Arts and Music appreciation course.

    This program will be a 3-week long combination (teacher preparation and student language learning) program in July 2019 to promote Chinese language learning and teaching in the local Central Maine community. With a focus on Chinese art, this program will offer a 3-week long combination program with two programs running in parallel and synchronously. This will be a residential, culture-rich pedagogical training for up to eight preservice/inservice teachers of Chinese and a beginning-level Chinese summer camp for up to twenty-four third to fifth graders. The teacher participants will learn to teach Chinese as second language through art; they will be guided to observe experienced teachers’ classes in the summer camp, to create components of art-based lesson plans for the camp, and finally to implement their lesson plans. The teacher participants will receive a certificate at the end of the 100 hour training on how to teach Chinese through art; whereas the student participants will gain an opportunity to develop their interests in and awareness of as well as an initial understanding of the Chinese language, art, and culture, and learn to use basic Chinese to communicate about their personal information, preferences, and art-related daily activities.

    The 2-week residential teacher training program, preceded by 2-week pre-program online training and followed by 1-week offsite practicum, aims to train 12 teachers to learn to teach Mandarin Chinese to 9-12 graders online. Trainees will earn up to five graduate credits in "Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language" that offers 126 instructional hours. The integration of both theory and practice will be delivered through a blended instructional model before, during, and after the program. The program ensures quality instruction and guides trainees to achieve three goals: 1) to effectively implement world-readiness standards in thematic and curricular design and STARTALK endorsed principles for effective ONLINE teaching, 2) to strengthen their observation and practicum experience in ONLINE teaching, and 3) to further their pursuit of teaching certification for career advancement in teaching Mandarin Chinese through different modalities. The capstone in the development of trainees’ competence will be the completion of an Eportfolio that documents UVA STARTALK Fellows’ extensive learning experiences in launching or advancing their careers in teaching Mandarin Chinese courses. UVA STARTALK Fellows will enjoy free lodging and food at the hometown of the 3rd US president, Thomas Jefferson and receive travel reimbursement up to $600 upon the completion of the program.     This is a three-week professional development program for teachers and aspiring teachers in Chinese. It is the intended outcome of the Bangor Chinese School, through the program, to build a reservoir of competent, trained, and student-focused teachers of Chinese in the State of Maine and beyond. These teachers will gain direct knowledge of national and Maine teaching standards in foreign language, the STARTALK six principles, the language “immersion” techniques, the uses of educational technology in the classroom, the capacity to adjust to diverse student learning styles, and the use of Linguafolio in stimulating student self-assessment. Student-centered classroom instruction, hands-on skills and strategies of creation/preparation of activities to engage students leaning will be taught. The program will emphasize quality foreign language instruction through daily mini-lessons, a capstone teaching experience, concrete coaching, and daily reflections. University credits in "Educating Exceptional Students" offered will be applicable to teacher certification in the State of Maine. There will be of the twelve enrollees, two of whom will be residential participants.
