    Summary

    Our STARTALK camp serves 80 students from Anchorage area schools in grades 1-8, mostly at the Novice-Low proficiency level with some at Novice-Mid. Twenty of the students are from our second grade immersion program and will serve as ”language models” in the sessions. The camp provides 55 instructional hours at 5.5 hours per day. An afterschool Chinese intensive program at Scenic Park operates three hours/week for six weeks into the 2019-2020 school year, serving up to 40 students, some of whom attended camp. Student outcomes include: increased Chinese language skills, increased knowledge of and appreciation for Chinese culture, and intention to continue Chinese studies through secondary school.

    Summary

    The STARTALK STEAM-Integrated Chinese Summer Program at Hope Chinese Charter School (HCCS) will engage 48 rising-grade 2-8 students, proficiency levels ranging from Novice-mid to Intermediate-mid, in a Chinese immersion environment for four weeks (114 instructional hours) through a series of integrative and interdisciplinary language learning experiences with STEAM subjects and activities. "Panda Panpan’s Friends around the World" is the theme for the program, which is an extension from our previous STARTALK summer program theme “Welcome to Panda Panpan’s Bamboo Garden!”. Students will be taken on a grand tour of four major continents and spotlight the diverse cultures in academic topics covering gourmet, wildness, architecture, and arts. The program and its curriculum will provide enriched opportunities for the learners to apply Chinese language skills in real-life connected scenarios for cultural understanding and practices, giving them a deeper understanding of people around the world and encouraging them to think of themselves as a global citizen. At the end of the program, the students will perform at the target proficiency levels (Novice-high to Intermediate-high), and achieve all the program learning goals in interpretive, interpersonal, and presentational modes of communication.

    Summary

    The Chinese Language and Culture Academy is a 15-day, non-residential program running from July 1 to July 20, 2019, at the State University of New York, College at Oswego. The program will recruit a total of 50 students ranging from the 2nd to the 12th grade. The three-week program will provide a total of 90 instructional hours at six hours per day with a program theme “Let’s Go to China.” Depending on their entry level, students are expected to advance their Chinese language proficiency to novice-mid and novice-high levels by the end of program. There will be five follow-up cultural workshops to promote cultural awareness during the 2019-20 school year.

    Summary

    The Fayette County Public School District’s 2019 STARTALK Chinese Summer Program will provide 55 instructional hours via a 2-week summer program for 110 district students (rising grades 1 – 6) who are currently studying Chinese language in district schools as well as native/heritage speakers in those grades and schools. Expected outcomes for our novice-mid through intermediate-low learners include 1) students will sustain and/or improve their language proficiency levels (novice – intermediate); 2) students will increase their intercultural communication including knowledge of and experience with Chinese culture; and 3) student experiences will provide valuable PR and help retain students as they move on to middle school language studies while also building interest among other students to participate in school-year Chinese classes and future STARTALK programs. The program will result in an increase in the number of students studying Chinese throughout the secondary grades and eventually at the postsecondary level, strengthening the K – 16 pipeline, while also helping to increase the number of district programs. Participating students will develop an expanded world view and appreciation for other cultures and meeting the district’s mission of creating a collaborative community that ensures all students achieve at high levels and graduate prepared to excel in a global society. The program will also engage parents in actively supporting the district’s Chinese language program, which may play a critical role in the district continuing to fund the offering of Chinese in future years.

    Summary

    This program is a four-week intensive program that is designed to move students forward in their Chinese language proficiency development. It incorporates learners from grades 1-12 from the Novice to the Intermediate-low levels. In grades 1-6, the students experience a content-related FLES program that introduces them to Chinese language and culture. In grades 7-12, students are placed according to their previous learning experience in level 1-4 classes. The theme for this year's program is "Exploring my Diverse World." Students will explore topics and themes related to various environmental issues along with animals and wildlife. The program will run from June 26-July 19, 2019.

    Summary

    We will recruit 100 students in grades K - 12 from Springfield Public schools and neighboring communities to participate in our 2019 Startalk Chinese Summer Immersion Camp if funded.
    A team of 9 instructors and 9 teaching assistants will instruct campers over 15 schools days of 6 hours each for a total 90 instructional contact hours with the support of director, IL, administrative assistant, technology support specialist, and martial arts expert.
    A pre-program baseline assessment will be used to determine students' prior knowledge for the appropriate placement of students.
    While students in grades 6 - 12 will participate in the online LinguaFolio assessment system, a culminating student performance activity for ALL students will serve as a summative outcome indicating mastery of math content and skills, as well as knowledge of language and culture.
