    Summary

    “The Silk Road” was the theme of our 2019 three-week, 120 hours student program for forty-two (42) grades 4-12 learners in northern New England Learners' proficiency from novice-low to intermediate-high at Husson University, Bangor, Maine. For the summer 2020, the Bangor Chinese School will continue to provide both new and tested teaching strategies and student learning experiences. Students will gain the four skills (speaking, listening, reading and writing) in a learning environment featuring language "immersion". BCS now offers to provide a year-eleven of instruction and learning experience in which students will take part in standards-based, student-centered language and culture immersion, thematic organized learning with target language and advanced educational technology. The goal of the learning process is to move each student’s proficiency levels up considerably by the end of the program. All master teachers of student program are required to participate in the BCS’s STARTALK teacher program to ensure the teaching quality of the program. It is hoped that following the program the participants and their families will be motivated to continue pursuing on-going language-speaking and cultural opportunities to enrich their own knowledge, and promote the ancient and rich Chinese heritage, allowing better understanding and effective diplomacy with that area of the world, be prepared to be able to compete for global jobs, manage multicultural colleagues and collaborate on global teams. Simply stated, if we are to face the challenges of the future with confidence, we must start now, using ACTFL standards and STARTALK principles, in building a cadre of young Americans who comprehend, speak and read this lovely, ancient and "critical" world language.

    Summary

    OneWorld Now!’s vision is that all young Americans have access to transformative international education. Through our year-round Global Leadership Program we integrate critical language learning, leadership training, and study abroad scholarships for mostly underserved high school students. Thanks to STARTALK, OWN has offered a three-week Arabic, Chinese, and Korean summer program for each of the last eleven years, with follow-on language classes available through our academic year long program. In 2019 we again propose to hold a three-week-long, non-residential Arabic, Chinese, and Korean language immersion program for non-heritage high school students in Seattle, especially those who have fewer opportunities to access international education. The program includes 15 six-hour days, for a total of 90 contact hours. The desired outcome of the STARTALK-OWN Summer Language Camp will be to introduce 51 students to Arabic, Korean, and Mandarin Chinese, as well as to motivate them to continue their language and cultural studies.

    Summary

    The UNG STARTALK Chinese and Astronomy Academy offers a two week (with 91 instructional hours) residential summer camp to 24 local, non-heritage high school students (rising Grade 9 - Grade 12) with no prior knowledge of the Chinese language from north Georgia area. The content and focus of learning will be spun on the theme “Outer Space: Truths, Myths and Mysteries”, integrated with the topics of astronomy selected from the Georgia Performance Standards (Georgia DOE, 2009) for High School Astronomy, the literacy of Chinese myths about the night sky, the Chinese language to introduce basic knowledge of astronomy and used in a simulated working place –an auction of selling naming rights of stars, and the Chinese culture connected to the topics of astronomy and the related myths. In this STEM focused language academy, students will be motivated to explore outer space through well designed content and context based and student centered scientific and language learning activities, making connections across disciplines and relating content to real world experience.

    Summary

    The 13-day Chinese and Turkish programs with a total of 91 hours instruction in Chinese or 91 hours instruction in Turkish will allow 24 middle school and high school students (grades 6-12) who have limited or no previous experience in Chinese to attain novice-mid proficiency in Chinese and 10 high school juniors and seniors (grades 11-12) along with college freshmen and sophomores who have limited or no previous experience in Turkish to attain novice-mid proficiency in Turkish. During each 7-hour day, students will engage in immersive language learning, practicing Martial Arts or Taekwondo, drumming, and music. The theme “A Musical Journey through China, a Musical Journey through Turkey” will provide ample opportunities for communication about food, geography, families, music, and basic greetings and introductions; learning about the cultures and content of the Chinese/Turkish traditions, music and sports; connecting to art and history. A field trip to the Atlanta Chinatown or the local Turkish cultural center will provide a rich exchange of activities with native speakers and an authentic opportunity for interpersonal communication. By the end of the program, students will reach "novice-mid" in all modes of communication based on the ACTFL proficiency guidelines and will be able to handle many authentic tasks, including telling and asking about basic personal information, commenting on their favorite Chinese or Turkish food, cities and musical instruments, designing itineraries, and performing skits and songs in Chinese or Turkish.

    Summary

    The STARTALK: Queens University of Charlotte Summer Institute in Chinese and Arabic is a three-week, 90 hour non-residential language immersion program for rising 7th - 12th graders that takes place from 9:00AM to 3:00PM July 22nd to August 9th with free snack and low-cost lunch provided. Student-centered learning will occur in an immersion setting using a variety of authentic materials and supporting technologies that will prepare students to engage in meaningful intercultural communication centered around our theme of "Holidays and Celebrations." Students will develop proficiency from the Novice to Intermediate levels and the skills and motivation to become involved in post-program community activities offered by Queens and our community partners. Approximately 64 students will be admitted to Chinese and 32 to Arabic in a competitive application process that does not require prior knowledge of the language. Undergraduate credit (4 hours) is granted upon successful program completion; the program may be repeated at a higher level for 4 additional credits if sufficient progress is made.

    Summary

    The Mandarin Institute STARTALK PRE-AP Program will provide 100 students from across the US the opportunity to strengthen their Chinese language skills whether in preparation for an AP Chinese course or for those who just want to improve their Chinese. The online learning environment is powered by Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology that incorporates the best strategies for second language acquisition which makes learning Chinese more efficient, effective and engaging.

    Through the theme of Innovation and Invention, participants will learn about the Four Great Inventions of China (paper, gunpowder, printing, compass), compare and contrast American and Chinese ingenuity and progress through innovations to today's social media, and explore the impact of these innovations on our lives.

    Each day students will engage in 90 minutes of synchronous online instruction with a teacher and 3 other students in addition to ~ 2 hours of asynchronous learning which includes independent, pair and group projects. Upon completion of the 50-hour program, students will attain intermediate-mid to intermediate-high ACTFL proficiency level and will have exposure to AP content and instruction.

    * All applicants will be given a complimentary license to AI tools that enable comprehension of text and facilitate independent reading.

    Summary

    HCC will provide summer courses in Arabic and Chinese to 60 high school students in Howard County. HCC will recruit students from grades 9 – 12 from public, private, and homeschools in the county and will provide them with 95 hours of instruction over five weeks from July 1 through August 1. The theme of our program is East Meets West: A Global Exchange. Our program outcomes include the following: exiting participants at the novice-mid or novice-high/intermediate-low levels, increasing all participants’ understand of the cultures of the Arab and Chinese global world, recruiting learners to enroll in second-semester language courses offered in the Fall semester, exposing all learners to potential career opportunities requiring the knowledge and skills in a critical language, and continuing to promote heightened awareness of the cultures of Arab and Chinese communities and connections to these communities throughout the academic year.

    The 2019 STARTALK STEAM-Infused Intensive Chinese Summer Program for 30 high school and college students in the Triad Piedmont areas of North Carolina, providing national standards-based language and culture instruction, preparing the young generation with essential and critical language skills in the 21st century for an ever-changing world. It offers intensive Chinese language learning opportunities for literacy learning and cultural understanding.

    No prior Chinese language experience is necessary. The program is FREE for qualified candidates with a $50 application fee.

    Summary

    Our Startalk program offers a free five-week Chinese summer intensive non-residential program for highly motivated college-bound high school students with no prior or little background in Chinese. Our program will accept 24 to 30 students. By the end of the program, we expect students to reach Novice Mid to Novice High on the ACTFL OPI scale. Our program will have a total of 80 hours of instruction, guided homework, cultural activities Monday to Thursday from 1:30 pm to 4:30 pm, and extracurricular activities on some Fridays. Our program theme “Our Identities, Our Heroes” allows students to learn Mandarin in a standards-based curriculum with relevance to their future identities and is designed using authentic materials to improve students’ communication skills significantly by providing a linguistically and culturally enriched learning environment.

    Appalachian State University (App State), located in Boone, North Carolina, will offer a three-week, residential, intensive student program from July 8 to July 26, 2019. The culturally rich and academically rigorous Chinese program is designed for 20 rising 9th-12th-grade students with limited or no previous exposure to Chinese from the high schools in the High Country of North Carolina. Focusing on the theme of “The High Country Meets the Middle Kingdom,” the program will offer a total of 253 contact hours in structured language learning. Upon the completion of the program, students will reach “Novice Low/Mid” proficiency in all modes of communication (interpersonal, interpretive, and presentational).
