    Summary

    Students will explore authentic products and practices that relate to traveling to a place in the world where either Arabic or Mandarin are spoken. They will travel to get to know different regions/cities and to investigate significant aspects of the culture or country. Before leaving on the trip, they will learn about the geographical features and climate of the area. They will also practice greetings so that can address people they meet using appropriate register, titles, courtesy expressions , and gestures. They will pack their backpacks with items they must take along on a virtual or local field trip. Once they arrive at their location, they will investigate the area and get to know the people and their customs. At the end of the program students will use their language skills to share with parents what they have learned about their region of study. This is a full day program, 9:00-5:00 PM. Breakfast and lunch are provided.

    Summary

    The Fauquier County 2019 STARTALK program includes twelve instructional days beginning July 8, 2019, and ending July 25, 2019 with a total of 70 instructional hours including extended day field trips. New and returning students, who are rising fifth to ninth graders, will be placed into differentiated classes with expected novice-low to intermediate-low proficiency levels. Our program theme will be "The Journey Continues" as we explore authentic cultural aspects of from locations throughout the Middle East where the target languages are spoken. Students will engage in interactive activities and design digital portfolios of their journeys.

    Summary

    NEIU's STARTALK 2019: Success and Access through Multilingualism Initiative (SAMI) plans to offer a summer Arabic language learning program to 30 K-3 (age 5-9 years) heritage and non-heritage learners who will be linguistically, ethnically, religiously, racially and socioeconomically diverse. The focus will be on students from underserved communities who have minimal access to second language learning programs inside or outside of school. The program will run from the 1st to the 31st of July 2019, for approximately 105 hours over the course of five weeks. Through STEAM-based curriculum, students will participate in language and culture classes infused in meaningful content of life of animals lives in their communities. The instruction will not only provide them with novice-mid Arabic proficiency, but also equip them with foundational skills for learning such as critical thinking, inquiry, and exploration. Targeted outcomes for these learners are an elementary awareness of the culture(s) associated with the language, an enthusiasm for learning the language as well as the ability to 1) introduce and describe themselves, 2) name and describe animals, animal environments, and distinguishing features/characteristics, and 3) express their dis/likes, desires, and needs (as well as those of animals) in Arabic.
