    Summary

    The Brockton Public Schools Startalk Unidos na Ciências program will provide engaging and rigorous STEM language learning in Portuguese full-immersion setting for students entering kindergarten through grade three. This is a bifurcated program, with elementary students in grades one through engaging in a two-week science exploration camp in July, and entering kindergartens participating in a two-week program in August. All students in this program participate in the Unidos Portuguese Dual Language Immersion program during the school year, with entering kindergartners being exposed to organized Portuguese language instruction for the first time. Students in the Unidos program in grade kindergarten through grade three have a novice Portuguese proficiency ranging from Novice-Low to Novice-High. In Unidos em Ciências, students will engage in grade level science standards, contextualized within the Lusophone world. Unidos em Ciências unifying theme is “Where in the Portuguese Speaking World”, with each grade contextualizing it for their curriculum standards. Kindergarten will focus on living things, basic needs, and the environment. Grade one will focus on space and motion. Grade two will focus on plants and animal characteristics. Grade three will focus on matter, land forms, and maps. Program goals will include interpretive communication, interpersonal communication, and presentational communication, with targeted outcomes for each grade. The program in July for first through third graders will run for ten days for five hours each day for a total of 50 instructional hours. The program for incoming kindergartners in August will run for three hours per day for two weeks for a total of 30 instructional hours.

    Summary

    The STARTALK Student Program, ‘Bridges to Russia: Culture and Social Sciences’ aims to enroll 20 high school Russian heritage students (14-18) in a four-week intensive language program meeting five hours a day for a total of 100 instructional hours. Students will increase their proficiency in Russian by examining how history and other social sciences help them to understand the world around them. The students will work closely with an elderly Russian-speaking community member and conduct an interview, which they will present in class. All interviews will be collected and turned into ‘Bridging the Generations’ project.

    Summary

    The Arabic Summer Academy Boston is an intensive program that welcomes high school students from around Boston to learn Arabic and explore the cultures of the Arabic-speaking world in an engaging and supportive environment. The program creates a dynamic academic environment where students from a variety of backgrounds can express their full selves, build communicative skills, and develop an ethic of lifelong learning as global citizens. The Arabic Summer Academy is a 17-day (102-hour) non-residential program, and it produces 40 graduates (grades 9-12) who have reached proficiency between the Novice Mid and Novice High levels in Arabic.

    Summary

    The Hudson STARTALK Portuguese Language & Cultures Summer Camp, administered by Hudson Public Schools, will give students in grades 3, 4 and 5 an opportunity to learn Portuguese and to discover the cultures of the Portuguese speaking world. The program will run from June 25 to July 17 providing students with 90 hours of instruction. Three classes will be offered: one class for heritage speakers; one for non-heritage speakers with little to no previous knowledge of the language; and a third class for returning non-heritage speakers and 5th-grade students currently taking Portuguese.
    Students will acquire language by engaging in real-life situations, singing, dancing, doing crafts, playing sports and going on field trips.

    2019 STARTALK Turkish Summer Camp (The Program), organized by Ace It Education Inc., d.b.a. Turkish Cultural Center Boston (TCC), will serve 33 ‘heritage learners’ of the Turkish language in grades 2 through 6. The target Turkish proficiency levels of the students are intermediate mid and intermediate high. The program will offer 84 hours of instructional time in a well-structured classroom environment in 3 weeks in July 2019. The outcome of the Program will be to teach students the value of bilingualism and excel in their “heritage language” by better understanding and presenting new vocabulary with nuances

    Summary

    2019 STARTALK Turkish Teacher Training Program, organized by Ace It Education Inc., d.b.a. Turkish Cultural Center Boston (TCC), will be 5 days and 30 hours of the ​instructional time training program for teachers. Participants in the teaching training program will be native Turkish speakers. We will advertise the program on the different platforms and we expect participation from a wide range of attendees such as some public school teachers, Turkish​ students in universities as well as members of the local Turkish community who currently teach in our Weekend School at the Turkish Cultural Center. These community members could be adults and also adolescents. Our goal is to prepare Turkish Language instructors to teach heritage learners and non-heritage​ learners in the US.

    Summary

    We will recruit 100 students in grades K - 12 from Springfield Public schools and neighboring communities to participate in our 2019 Startalk Chinese Summer Immersion Camp if funded.
    A team of 9 instructors and 9 teaching assistants will instruct campers over 15 schools days of 6 hours each for a total 90 instructional contact hours with the support of director, IL, administrative assistant, technology support specialist, and martial arts expert.
    A pre-program baseline assessment will be used to determine students' prior knowledge for the appropriate placement of students.
    While students in grades 6 - 12 will participate in the online LinguaFolio assessment system, a culminating student performance activity for ALL students will serve as a summative outcome indicating mastery of math content and skills, as well as knowledge of language and culture.
