    Summary

    This 3-week STARTALK CHINESE IMMERSION ACADEMY will engage 44 rising fifth and sixth graders with the theme "Disappearing Water" offering cognitively challenging science content, functional language and engaging activities as the anchor for language learning with authentic multi-disciplinary connections. During 90 instructional hours, non- heritage learners will progress toward novice-mid proficiency levels in the communication modes of listening and speaking with minimal focus on reading and writing. Heritage speakers will advance toward intermediate-low/mid proficiency level in listening and speaking modes with more emphasis on literacy skills of reading and writing. This Academy serves as an initial step for some, while offering a supportive and ongoing experience for others, creating interest and momentum toward building an established long-sequence pipeline for multiple Chinese academic year programs in Blue Valley Schools.

    Summary

    The University of Kansas STARTALK Swahili Academy is an intensive program that will welcome 20 non-heritage learners in grades 7–12 to study and explore the cultures of the Swahili–speaking world for 120 instructional-hours over the course of four weeks. By the end of the program learners will be expected to advance their Swahili language proficiency to at least novice high, or intermediate low proficiency levels, according to the NCSSFL-ACTFL Global Can-Do Benchmarks, and high school level participants will earn five semester hours of college credit. Classroom implementation of the curriculum and learning plans will integrate language, culture, and content based on the World Readiness Standard of Learning Languages, backward curriculum design, and the STARTALK principles of effective foreign language learning. Throughout the program learners will be evaluated using integrated performance-based assessment, and they will have opportunities to explore the rich Swahili culture through activities such as cooking lessons, culture presentations, and field trips. They will be taught by native speakers who have experience teaching in the United States and are knowledgeable about the ACTFL proficiency guidelines, the World Readiness Standards for Learning Languages, Oral Proficiency Interview, and the STARTALK principles of effective foreign language learning.
