- Boston University Wheelock College of Education & Human Development, Boston, MA
The BU Wheelock STARTALK Teacher Academy uses a blended learning format to support teachers of Arabic, Chinese, Korean, and Spanish in developing and demonstrating their ability to teach in the target language with comprehensible input and facilitate learner interactions in their classrooms. This 5-week program begins with a self-evaluation through the CATALYST platform and individual goal setting. The first four weeks of the program are held online, where participants build understanding of providing input and facilitating learner interactions, watch and critique model lessons, develop their own tasks and lesson plans, work collaboratively in peer groups, and participate in weekly “Live Sessions” where they interact with the Instructional Team, experts in the field, and each other to provide feedback and support. The program culminates with virtual micro-teaching, where participants demonstrate their application of teaching in the target language with comprehensible input and facilitating learner interactions in both similar-language and mixed-language groups, and participants are supported by the Instructional Team through coaching and feedback. Participants additionally receive guidance on securing or advancing their teaching license in Massachusetts, may enroll in optional graduate credits at BU Wheelock, and have the opportunity to receive extended support through the fall when additional Live Sessions will allow participants to share lessons and receive feedback using a Lesson Study format.
