    Summary

    The Fairfax Academy at Fairfax High School will offer three summer classes in Korean (2 level 1 and 1 level 2) to 45 high school students for four weeks from July 8th, 2019 to August 1st, 2019. Students will graduate from the program with a proficiency level of Novice-Mid to Intermediate-Low and with an increased understanding of the Korean culture and region. Through an immersion experience, students will build their Korean language skills and explore the connection between language and culture by participating in fun, hands-on activities such as calligraphy, Taekwondo, Korean fan dance, drums, food, and a field trip.

    The program also aims to recruit students to continue their language learning at Fairfax Academy during the school year. In addition, students will learn about career opportunities requiring proficiency in critical languages and where they can pursue these studies in higher education institutions through various scholarships. Finally, the program will encourage ongoing dialogue and awareness on Korean language and culture among students during the academic year.

    Using K-Pop For Effective Differentiated Planning

    Summary

    Our program will emphasize standards-based, learner-centered planning and classroom management for teaching Korean language and culture based on two TELL learning goals. Participants will demonstrate how to plan and create learning plans that address the unique needs and interests of their students and using differentiated instruction in K-Pop to plan lessons that lead students to meet performance objectives.
    Number of participants and their teaching levels: 15 pre-service teachers.
    Number of instructional hours: 120
    Duration of the program: three weeks in the summer followed by two fall workshops.
