    Summary

    Bryant University will offer a two-week STARTALK Chinese Language and Culture Student Program from July 11 to 22 for middle school and high school students in Rhode Island and the neighboring states. No previous Chinese learning experience is required. Participants will be assigned to one of four classes at the following four proficiency levels based on a placement test: Novice Low (one class), Novice Mid (one class), Intermediate Mid (one class), and Advanced Low (one class).
    Students will learn and experience Chinese language and culture through intensive language classes and rich cultural workshops and presentations. National standards and best practices will be applied into the language education. Complimentary breakfast and lunch will be provided during this two-week program. At the end of the Program, we expect students to be able to reach the learning goals of the Can-Do Statements in the STARTALK curriculum templates for their respective proficiency level, and bring their STARTALK learning experience back to the school and community.

    Summary

    This two-week STARTALK Student Program (from July 12 to July 25) plans to recruit 45 middle school and high school students from Grades 6 to 12 in Rhode Island and neighboring states. Based on the placement test result, accepted students will be divided into three proficiency level classes: Novice Low, Novice Mid, and Intermediate under the themes of “Me, My Friends and My Family” for Novice Low, and “Welcome to My Neighborhood” for the Novice Mid and Intermediate levels. Students will attend six hours of activities daily consisting of three hours of language classes, two hours of cultural workshops, and a one-hour complimentary lunch, for a total of 60 contact hours during 10 days. By the end of the Program, we expect students to be able to reach the learning goals of the Can-Do Statements in the STARTALK curriculum templates for their respective proficiency level, and bring their STARTALK learning experience back to their respective schools and communities to generate more interest in critical language learning.
