    Summary

    This program is a four-week intensive program that is designed to move students forward in their Chinese language proficiency development. It incorporates learners from grades 1-12 from the Novice to the Intermediate-low levels. In grades 1-6, the students experience a content-related FLES program that introduces them to Chinese language and culture. In grades 7-12, students are placed according to their previous learning experience in level 1-4 classes. There will be approximately five students at the elementary level and twenty at the middle/high school levels for a total of 51 instructional hours for elementary and 102 hours for secondary students. The program will run from June 27-July 20, 2018.

    Summary

    The STARTALK Student Summer Bridging Academies in Portland offer a three-week intensive language and culture learning experience for 75 K-5 students of Chinese and 38 K-5 students of Russian who are currently enrolled in Portland Public Schools’ Dual Language Immersion programs, will be entering grade K, or plan late entry into a program in fall 2017. The Academies provide 90 hours of instruction based on the theme of “Bridging Cultures through Cuisine.” Student outcomes target a one proficiency level gain, from Novice to Intermediate and, for struggling students, a boost going into the school year. As part of a combined STARTALK program that additionally offers a Teacher Academy, students will be exposed to a curriculum infused by the STARTALK-Endorsed Principles for Effective Teaching and Learning and help solidify Portland Public Schools contribution to a pipeline of students enrolled in the study of critical languages.

    Summary

    ACA 2018 STARTALK Chinese Summer Camp: Earth is Our Home will provide 50 K-5 students at University Park Elementary School with a Chinese language, culture and STEM integrated learning program for 92 instructional hours over 3 weeks in summer (June 25, 2018 to July 13, 2018, field trip: July 6 & 13, 2018) and additional 20 hours in an extension program in fall 2018, a total of 112 instructional hours. Students will receive technology-enhanced language instruction organized on different topics about the Earth during a virtual visit to the International Earth Day Fair in China. After attending the program, students will be able to greet each other and exchange simple information in Chinese, and build lasting interest to continue with their Chinese learning.

    Summary

    The program will offer 91 hours of learner centered Hindi language and culture learning to 84 early elementary to middle school students (1- 8 grade). Participants will be placed in age-appropriate classes ranging from novice to intermediate level, based on their pre-program informal Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) assessment. Program's major goals will be to develop Hindi language competence of all participants by at least one higher sub level in three modes of communication. Participants will have the opportunity to develop language skills, and cultural competence by exploring program's curriculum contents based on the theme 'Me and My World- Unity in Diversity', and World Readiness Standards for Learning Languages. Differentiated instruction, intentional scaffolding to build Hindi literacy skills, formative and performance assessments will guide and motivate learners to self-monitor and grow their language skills. Theme based games, competitions, multimedia projects and hands-on native visual and performing arts projects will provide opportunities to all language learners with varied needs to engage in meaningful communication, create and present collaborative products for peer assessment and self reflection. The program will also provide continued Hindi language and culture learning opportunity to learners during its 20 week online-blended session (September 2018- March 2019).

    ABC Houston STARTALK Student Program aims to raise the awareness of and stimulate students’ interest in learning Chinese language and culture. The program will collaborate with Neff Elementary School and offer 5 classes. We will recruit 60 elementary students ranging from 1st to 5th graders. The Program lasts four weeks in June, providing 96 hours of exciting and rigorous language and culture instruction. Students will be led to explore the richness of Chinese culture through various activities in an interactive learning environment.

    The Indus Arts Council Urdu STARTALK Program will offer another exciting 15 days hands-on learning opportunity to 50 local upper elementary and middle school students to improve their Urdu language skills and their familiarity with Urdu culture. and their familiarity with Urdu culture. 2. Instructional hours will be between 9:00AM and 3:00PM 3. We strive to provide total immersive and conducive environment inside and outside the class to make learning fun and engaging. 4. Students will improve their proficiency in Urdu language and culture through an engaging curriculum that integrates age-appropriate content goals with language learning and cultural goals. 5.     Summary

    The 2018 STARTALK Paint Branch Chinese STEAM and Culture Summer Academy will offer 60 elementary
    novice students an intense but fun and innovative science and culture-oriented summer immersion three-week experience for 94 instructional hours. It is open to all students currently in grades kindergarten to fifth in Prince George's County, Maryland and its neighboring areas. Students will be divided into three classes of 20 students according to their grade levels: kindergarten and 1st grades, 2nd and 3rd grades, and 4th and 5th grades. Based on the theme,"From Seeds to Table", students will be able to make healthy choices, create colorful salads, demonstrate the understanding of where ingredients are from as well as basic nutrition. We will also introduce certain common Chinese vegetables and dishes. Hands-on activities will range from growing healthy food to exploring Chinese arts and crafts. There are two field trips planned for the camp.

    Summary

    Yuva Hindi Sansthan, in partnership with North PennSchool District, proposes its sixth YHS STARTALK Hindi Language and Culture Program 2018 from June 18-July 6 to teach Hindi to 40 K-8 students of ages 8 to 13. We will develop three levels of curricula for two Novice and one Intermediate ranges of ACTFL proficiency guidelines under the overarching overarching theme, 'My virtual trip to India', divided into three sub-themes, 'food, festival and places of various regions of India' to provide information in chunks and recycle them. By end of the units Novice level learners will be able to do basic tasks, such as, identifying characters and events and presenting in culturally appropriate manner while Intermediate students will pair and share, compare and contrast information with their own experiences and ideas in USA. Our instructors will receive program specific professional development training under the guidance of a pedagogy expert and a K-8 literacy expert in the pre-program period. A structured post-program follow up plan will be implemented to help students sustain and improve their skills.

    Summary

    Huayuan Chinese Academy’s “STARTALK STEM-Integrated Chinese Learning Program” will immerse 45 rising 2nd through 5th graders in a Chinese language and culture environment for a total of 91 instructional hours over 3 weeks, June 25-July 13, 2018, followed by a 10-week fall Extension Program. The curriculum is constructed around the storyline of the fictional character Water Baby’s fun life, magic show, and adventures, with the STEM-based theme “Explore Water, an Essential Element of Life.” The curriculum integrates hands-on linguistic, cultural, and scientific activities, all designed based on the World-Readiness Standards for Learning Languages. At the end of the program, students will be able to greet each other, exchange simple information about themselves and their family members, as well as topics related to three states of water, water cycle, and water pollution, and follow simple steps in Chinese for scientific experiments.

    Summary

    The Anchorage School District’s STARTALK Summer Chinese Language and Culture Camp is a two-week, ten-day, morning and afternoon non-residential program held in June 2018 at Scenic Park Elementary School. The camp serves 80 students from Anchorage area schools in grades 1-8, mostly at the Novice-Low proficiency level with some at Novice-Mid. The camp provides 55 instructional hours at 5.5 hours per day. An afterschool Chinese intensive program at Scenic Park operates three hours/week for six weeks into the 2018-2019 year, serving up to 40 students, some of whom attended camp. Student outcomes include: increased Chinese language skills, increased knowledge of and appreciation for Chinese culture, and intention to continue Chinese studies through secondary school.
