    Summary

    This 20-day, 80-instructional-hour summer program aims to increase the awareness and interest in Chinese and Korean languages and cultures among the community. The program will also serve as a springboard for the establishment of two-way immersion programs in collaboration with the school district in the next few years. A total of 45 second and third grade non-heritage language learners with no prior experience in Chinese or Korean will be recruited: 30 for the Chinese program and 15 for the Korean program. By the end of the summer program, students are expected to achieve a novice-low level of reading and writing and a novice-mid level of listening and speaking in the target language. They are also expected to develop a sustained interest in the target languages and cultures, continuing their learning in the online program from July to August and in the after-school programs during the academic year.

    Summary

    HEB ISD’s Startalk "Around the World in 12 Days" language academy will provide 3 weeks and 72 hours of student-centered learning and instruction in Hindi, Arabic, or Chinese to rising 7th graders, and intermediate level practice for 8th-11th grade students. Projected enrollment for Arabic, Hindi, and Chinese will be 50 students- 25 7th graders, and 25 intermediate students. At the end of this academy, we expect students to achieve novice level oral proficiency in their language of choice (rising 7th graders) and intermediate low-mid (upper grades). We anticipate that approximately 90% of our 7th grade students will continue in the language course in the fall at our district. For intermediate students, we expect their grades on the IB exams to reflect the benefits of additional language practice.

    Summary

    The Russian STARTALK Program at UNT is a non- residential, intensive Russian language course at the Novice level and is fully funded by a federal grant. All program activities, including tuition, textbooks and other learning materials are free of charge to students. Upon the successful competition of the summer school, our students will achieve novice level of language proficiency, will be able to communicate in Russian appropriate at the novice level and will enhance their cultural awareness. Additionally, all successful students will be awarded six college credit hours. The number of program participants is limited to 20 students that will be selected from a pool of applicants. The selection criteria are based on academic performance and interest in pursuing Russian after the completion of the program.

    Applications may be submitted from February 15, 2017 to April 28, 2017. All successful applicants will be informed no later than May 8, 2017. More information and application instructions can be found on http://worldlanguages.unt.edu (Undergraduate; Russian).

    Summary

    Houston STARTALK Student Program aims to raise the awareness of and stimulate students’ interest in learning Chinese language and culture. The program will recruit 75 elementary students ranging from 1st to 5th grades. We will collaborate with Neff Elementary School and offer 5 classes in total. The Program lasts four weeks in June, providing 96 hours of exciting and rigorous language and culture instruction. Students will be led to explore the richness of Chinese culture through various activities in an interactive learning environment.

    Summary

    The "STARTALK- A Trip to the Arab World" Arabic summer program held at the First Presbyterian Church of El Paso is a three-week immersion program (June 12 –June 30) designed for elementary students, rising 3rd to 5th graders. The number of students enrolled is 30 divided into two classes. The program consists of 90 hours of instruction in addition to 5 hours of post program workshops (August 5, September 2, 2017). At the end of the program students will be able to perform at the Novice Mid/Novice High level according to the NCSSFL-ACTFL Global Can-Do Benchmarks.

    Summary

    Startalk @UTEP is a four-week summer language program designed to introduce 40 high school students to the Arabic and Portuguese languages. They will be divided into four groups of 10. The program will have two sections of Arabic and Portuguese novice low/mid and two sections of Arabic / Portuguese novice mid/high for returning students. Selected students will participate in 90 hours of language instruction. Summer language acquisition will be maintained and expanded during the subsequent school year, through participation in virtual language and cultural awareness sessions. Upon completion of the program students will have developed a novice/mid level of Arabic / Portuguese and novice/high for returning students.
