    Summary

    The STARTALK Arabic Academy at Penn State is an ambitious, multifaceted program for 20 high school and college students to take an introductory college course in Arabic. Starting with no prior knowledge of Arabic, students will reach novice-mid or novice-high level. For 4 weeks (June 17 -July 12, 2019), a multinational instructional team provides instruction in Arabic for 5.5 hours daily Monday through Thursday, an additional 2 hours of afternoon immersion twice a week, and 4.5 hours on Friday, for a total of 113 available instructional hours. Upon successful completion, students earn 4 Penn State credits (one semester of college Arabic). Through student-centered, task-based, and communicative activities, students will become acquainted with Arabic cultures and learn to communicate in Arabic.

    This professional development program, designed for 10 current and prospective teachers of Arabic at middle school, high school, and post-secondary levels, uses a three-part blended learning structure: (1) a 3-week pre-seminar online component (estimated 20 hours' instructional time), June 1-20; (2) a 7-day residential seminar (54 instructional hours), held at Penn State's University Park Campus, June 22-28, during which the teachers participate in teaching high school and college students who are taking an introductory Arabic course at Penn State; and (3) a post-seminar online component (estimated 7 hours), July 7- 12; for 81 hours total. The broad outcome at which we aim is to contribute to the national effort to expand instructional capacity in critical languages, including Arabic. More specifically, by the end of the program, participants will have demonstrated their abilities to plan and successfully present standards-based learning experiences in the target language; and through final portfolios they will also have demonstrated a mindset for transfer of their STARTALK learning and a knowledge of career pathways, including certification or further degrees where relevant.

    Summary

    Yuva Hindi Sansthan, in partnership with North Penn School District, will conduct its seventh YHS STARTALK Hindi Language and Culture Program 2019, from June 24-July 12, to teach Hindi to 40 K-8 students during 105 instructional hours. We will develop three levels of curricula for two Novice and one Intermediate ranges of ACTFL proficiency guidelines under the overarching overarching theme, 'My virtual trip to India', divided into three sub-themes of 'things to see, do and eat' in the four destinations of North, South, East and West, of India. We will select an entirely new set of authentic audio-visual materials and develop related performance and literacy activities for our participants, many of whom are likely to be returning students. By end of the units Novice learners will be able to do basic tasks, such as, identifying characters and events and presenting in culturally appropriate manner while Intermediate students will pair and share, compare and contrast information with their own experiences and ideas in USA. Our students will virtually interact with their counterparts at Dr. Pillai Global Academy, an IB school in Mumbai, India, once a week to encourage partner work, create a sense of community and foster friendships and will be conducted to a day long field trip to connect with the community. A structured post-program follow up plan will be implemented to help students sustain and improve their skills.

    Pitt STARTALK “We're Off to Russia!” is an intensive four-week-long Russian summer school for high school students that is administered by the University of Pittsburgh’s Center for Russian, East European, and Eurasian Studies (REEES) and will take place on June 17 through July 12, 2019 on Pitt campus. 20 students from five partnering high schools that offer academic year Russian language programs (Pittsburgh Brashear High School, Penn Trafford High School, Hollidaysburg Area Senior High School, Pritzker College Prep, and Noble Academy) along with students from other U.S. high schools will participate in this Russian language and culture program. The curriculum that is based on the theme “We’re Off to Russia!” will prepare participants for a study-abroad program in Russia. Besides performance-based instructions that target the acquisition of speaking, listening, reading, and writing proficiency in Russian, high school students will also have a chance to explore Russian culture around Pittsburgh, by visiting a Russian church, buying groceries in a Russian store, cooking Russian cuisine, learning Russian songs and poems, participating in Russian art and craft workshops, and meeting with the members of the local Russian community.

    PASSPORT TO BRAZIL
    From July 8 through August 2, 2019, the University of Pittsburgh’s Center for Latin American Studies (CLAS), in collaboration with Pittsburgh Public Schools (PPS) will offer a four-week STARTALK Portuguese Language and Brazilian Culture program on the Oakland campus for 20 high school students entering grades 9-12. Students will receive 120 hours (5 days/week, 6 hours/day) of instruction integrating language and culture through engaging and authentic learning opportunities. Proficiency goals will range between Novice High and Intermediate Mid, depending upon the number of years students have been enrolled in Portuguese classes. Applicants will be selected based on demonstrated interest, academic record, and teacher recommendation. Preference will be given to PPS students who have either studied Portuguese during the previous school year, or plan to do so the following year.

    The STARTALK-Penn Chinese Language Teacher Advancement Program is a teacher enrichment program to provide STARTALK-approved training to fifteen K-16 Chinese language teachers for career advancement. Held at the beautiful campus of University of Pennsylvania, this two-week, 63 instructional hour face-to-face program will be from July 21 to August 2nd, 2019 each day from 9 am to 4 pm. The program will offer Penn expert discussions on China's Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), China's history of interactions in Central Eurasia, nationalism and Chinese minorities, ecological and environmental issues relating to the BRI, as well as pedagogy training, material development and micro-teaching. The program also features video editing training, a field trip to a Philadelphia high school and workshop in the Penn Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology. This partial residential program offers travel funds to 10 STARTALK participants to cover housing for 10 out-of-state participants during the program; Pennsylvania participants will receive ACT 48 hours toward re-certification and career advancement. After the program, participating teachers will have new teaching materials that are World-Readiness Standard-based with innovative culture content and technology components, to use in the new school year. Experiences gained from this Belt & Road Initiative themed program will open great opportunities for language teachers to connect the subject to K-12 courses, such as Economics, World History, World Geography, Environment Study, Arts and Music appreciation course.
