University of Massachusetts Boston (Student)
2018 UMASS-STARTALK Combined Program
- July 9, 2018 – July 27, 2018: (Face-to-face)
- University of Massachusetts Boston, Boston, MA
The 2018 summer theme “The Magical Journey of the Monkey King” gives students an opportunity to learn language in a fascinating story-based context with relevance to their daily lives; it is designed to motivate and improve students’ communication skills, thus significantly advancing proficiency levels by the end of camp. A small group of Student Leaders (5-10 high school students with 3-4 years of camp experience), will assist staff, assist instructors in classrooms, and lead student activities, while participants in both teacher groups (new and advanced) will be visiting classes to observe and practice teaching in language and culture activities. UMass will accept 45 students from grades 6-12 to study in 3 levels of Mandarin (Novice-mid through Intermediate-mid) for a program that runs July 9-27 with daily hours from 9:00am to 3:00pm, generating 105 hours of learning, plus an optional post-daily program from 3:00-6:00pm for an additional 25 hours of arts, games, and language, and technology-based projects. The combined student and teacher program will allow collaborative teaching and learning for the 2 groups of participants in the Teacher Program, while providing frequent opportunities for students to have individualized attention, support, and authentic, spontaneous experiences speaking Mandarin.
