    Summary

    The UCLA Center for World Languages, host of the National Heritage Language Resource Center, will offer a four-week teacher workshop on strategies for developing materials for heritage language learners (HLLs). Following a flipped format, the workshop will consist of three weeks of online training with an instructor’s feedback and monitoring, and one week of on-site instruction at UCLA, for a total of 75 instructional hours. We will accept 20 participants from across the country representing K-16 institutions. . Participants will demonstrate an ability to apply principles of materials development by designing a Standards-based project that is appropriate for HLLs with differing proficiency levels and needs. We are investigating the possibility of awarding Mozilla badges to participants.

    STARTALK: MOSAAIC – Multilingual Opportunities for Students in Arabic Arts, Innovation, and Culture, establishes a four-week, 120-hour summer intensive language learning program for 5th-7th grade students in Patterson, CA to acquire mid-novice levels of Arabic language skills through the arts and cultures of Arabic-speaking communities. The program offers students daily opportunities every day to use their emerging Arabic language capacities to observe, critique, and create culturally responsive art and to communicate in culturally and linguistically authentic and meaningful ways. The program will also support 75 hours of staff professional collaboration, learning and reflection to create the target classroom learning plans, plan student and family activities, and enhance their language teaching and arts integration skills.

    Summary

    Occidental College offers two separate blended programs one focusing on the development of leadership and the second focusing on technology as the core of standards-based instruction. Thirty applicants (teachers in elementary, middle, high school and university settings) will be served in these two programs for ninety-six hours. Sixteen hours in the Leadership Program and twenty-four hours in the Technology Program will be delivered online. The face-to-face segment will be three days for Leadership Program and four days for Technology Program. The Leadership program is by invitation.
    Participants in the leadership program will revise or create their curricular maps and/or their thematic units in light of readings on the theory and practice of formative and summative assessment, specifically proficiency and performance. They will learn to use assessment data to articulate activities/tasks and ensure maximal learning. During the intervening year, participants will deliver their materials by framework-aligned and standards-based practices and refine their performance tasks, units and lessons to ensure optimal articulation and move learners to higher levels of proficiency.
    Technology Sessions will be offered for teachers at various levels of proficiency. Novices will design or adapt a learning episode and deliver a model episode for high school/university students. They will a) specify the learning targets using can-do statements b) create a technology-based interpretive task with authentic materials using technology to make language, culture and/or content comprehensible to students, c) explore various programs that can be used to support interpersonal and presentational communication and d) participate in a practicum where they teach segments of a model lesson to university student volunteers.
    Intermediate level participants, will complete the tasks assigned to novices as well as the following tasks: a) edit authentic materials, b) create learning episodes/plans that include technology-based interpersonal activities that simulate real-world tasks; and c) technology-based presentational tasks that demonstrate culturally appropriate language use.
    Teachers in the Leadership and Technology Sessions will explore the use of platforms to facilitate professional development and language learning and participate in an online community to share materials and practices that will foster continued interaction among participants.

    Summary

    The two primary outcomes for the proposed project are a positive learning experience for approximately 100 Portuguese heritage students in grades 2-11 ranging in language ability from novice to intermediate, along with a professional development experience for 15 Portuguese language and culture educators that will increase their language and cultural knowledge as well as their pedagogical content knowledge to successfully implement standards-based language instruction in their classrooms. The students will participate in approximately 75 hours of instruction in a three-week program that will be incorporated into the Hilmar Unified School District's summer school program.

    Summary

    The 2017 Berkeley STARTALK Teacher Program is a 23-day 184-hour Blended Program designed for twelve (12) teachers teaching or planning to teach grades 6-12 in public, private, and heritage schools. (The complete grant period will be April 1, 2017 through February 28, 2018). Each teacher participant will develop and microteach two Standards-Based lesson plans using backward-designed and STARTALK Endorsed Principles. One lesson will be developed and microtaught independently, another lesson will be done collaboratively with another teacher participant. The participants will also have the opportunity to review samples of teaching material, including demo teaching, various authentic materials, as well as STARTALK Classroom Video Collections & Multimedia Teacher Workshop Collections. The participants will also have the opportunity to meet the candidates in the Berkeley STARTALK Teacher Certification Enrichment (Infrastructure) Program in the post program workshop to learn how to become certified teachers.

    Summary

    The STARTALK Russian Language and Culture Immersion Program is designed to promote accelerated language learning with integrated knowledge of culture, protocols, and national identity in modern Russia. The program will admit 20 undergraduates from universities and community colleges across the nation, dividing cohorts into proficiency tracks: Novice and Intermediate. Standards-based and thematically organized curriculum is programmed over six weeks of residential study with 306 hours of structured learning: 174 hours of in-class instruction; 87 hours of self-directed learning activities; and 45 hours of weekend cultural enrichment activities. Curriculum is organized around the theme "Let's Talk About Life," developing among students practical communication skills that are relevant in academic, professional, and everyday contexts. Participants typically advance one to two levels in language proficiency.

    Summary

    The purpose of the CAIS STARTALK Elementary Immersion Program is to provide continuity for retention, enhanced learning, and reinforcement of Chinese language and culture skills to a constituency of San Francisco Unified School District and student who are studying in similar immersion models that would otherwise not be able to access such an opportunity. As a result of participating in the summer program, students will be confident of their language capabilities and enjoy learning about Chinese culture in a fun environment. Students who have been identified as struggling during the school year have the chance to reinforce their learning. We are targeting twelve students per grade, 1st to 5th grade inclusive for two three-week sessions for a total of one hundred fifty students and two hundred and ten instructional hours.

    STARTALK Korean at USC will offer a 4-week Novice-level Korean language classes to high school students (9th-12th grades, total 24 students). We recruit non-heritage students with no prior knowledge as well as those with basic communication skills in Korean. Participants will earn 5 high school credits upon the successful completion. By the end of the program, we expect students to reach Novice Mid or Novice High (for returning students from a previous STARTALK program) on the ACTFL OPI scale. The daily program includes four hours of instruction from Monday through Friday (6/19~7/14/2017), totaling 80 hours of instruction including Orientation and Field Trip.

    Summary

    The LMU 2017 Mandarin Student Summer Immersion Program is based on ACTFL Standards-Standards for Foreign Language Learning and Preparing for the 21st Century, as well as aligned with the Common Core, Visual/ Performing Arts, and Physical Education Standards for California Public Schools. Expected program outcomes are that students will be able to: 1) perform Chinese folk art dancing, sing, recite Chinese poetry, complete and describe hands-on culture, art and craft projects; 2) Guide family/community members through a market-place simulation during a culminating experience representative of this year’s theme, Discovery through the Virtual Journey along the Silk Road; 3) Integrate Chinese language and cultural learning through the Virtual Journey by learning proverbs about travel/journey, their meanings and morals, and engage in interdisciplinary instruction with language arts, math and social studies. This program targets 184 students from Castelar Elementary School in Chinatown, as well as neighboring sites currently providing Mandarin Dual Language Programs in the greater Los Angeles area. We will hold 8 simultaneous class sessions and students will participate for 4 instructional hours per day, 5 days a week, for two weeks totaling 40 student contact hours.
