    Summary

    STARTALK @ Wofford offers 149 instructional hours, blended beginning Chinese language and culture courses (two-week intensive summer classes, eight-week summer online learning, and twenty-five individualized sessions in the Fall and Winter) to forty-five 6th-12th graders in Spartanburg, Greenville, nearby counties and other places who have little prior access to Chinese language and culture. The goals are to provide communicative language learning and hands-on cultural activities to promote participants’ learning of Chinese language and culture, and to boost their awareness of the national need to learn a strategic language such as Chinese, the differences/similarities between Chinese language and culture and their base language and culture, and an awareness of the local Chinese community. During the program, participants will receive performance-based language instruction, participate in hands-on cultural activities, and apply what they have learned in tasks that simulate future communication in an exchange program. Participants will engage in all communication modes, and improve their language proficiency 1 to 2 sublevels higher.

    This program is a four-week intensive program that is designed to move students forward in their Chinese language proficiency development. It incorporates learners from grades 1-12 from the Novice to the Intermediate-low levels. In grades 1-6, the students experience a content-related FLES program that introduces them to Chinese language and culture. In grades 7-12, students are placed according to their previous learning experience in level 1-4 classes. There will be approximately five students at the elementary level and twenty at the middle/high school levels for a total of 51 instructional hours for elementary and 102 hours for secondary students. The program will run from June 27-July 20, 2018.

    Summary

    The STARTALK Arabic Academy at Penn State is an ambitious, multifaceted program for 20 high school and college students to take an introductory college course in Arabic. For 4 weeks (June-July), a multinational instructional team provides instruction in Arabic for 5.5 hours daily Monday through Thursday, an additional 2 hours of afternoon immersion twice a week, and 4.5 hours on Friday, for a total of 113 available instructional hours. Upon successful completion, students earn 4 Penn State credits (one semester of college Arabic).
    Through student-centered, task-based, and communicative activities, students will become acquainted with Arabic cultures and learn to communicate in Arabic. Starting with no prior knowledge of Arabic, students will reach novice-mid or novice-high level.

    Summary

    The Hudson STARTALK Portuguese Language & Cultures Summer Camp, administered by Hudson Public Schools, will give students in grades 3 to 5 an opportunity to learn Portuguese and to discover the cultures of the Portuguese speaking world. The program will run from June 27 to July 18 providing students with 90 hours of instruction. Three classes will be offered: one class for heritage speakers; one for non-heritage speakers with little to no previous knowledge of the language; and a third class for returning non-heritage speakers and 5th grade students currently taking Portuguese.
    Students will acquire language by engaging in real-life situations, singing, dancing, doing crafts, playing sports and going on field trips.

    Summary

    OneWorld Now!’s vision is that all young Americans have access to transformative international education. Through our year-round, Seattle-based Global Leadership Program, we integrate critical language learning, leadership training, and study abroad scholarships with a focus on minority and low-income high school youth. Thanks to STARTALK, OWN has offered a three-week Arabic, Chinese, and Korean summer program for each of the last ten years, with follow-on language classes available through the OWN academic yearlong program. In our twelfth year offering the STARTALK summer immersion program, we will hold another three-week-long, non-residential Arabic, Chinese, and Korean language immersion program for non-heritage high school students in Seattle. The program includes 15 six-hour days, for a total of 90 contact hours. The desired outcome of the STARTALK-OWN Summer Language Camp will be to introduce 51 students to Arabic, Korean and Mandarin Chinese, and to motivate them to continue their language and cultural studies.

    -- The program will enroll 75 to 80 students in grades 3-8 at Novice and Intermediate levels and will be held inJuly at Marlboro Memorial Middle School for three weeks M-F 8:30-3:30 for a total of 105 contact hours.
    -- The program provides Language instruction based on STARTALK principles while culturally appropriate activities like yoga, music, media lab, project-based learning, outdoor sports and community interaction are included as supporting activities to reinforce language and culture in an integrated fashion with the Theme of Festivals and Fairs of India.
    -- The program aims at improving communication skills by one or two notches according to the ACTFL guidelines and enhancing literacy skills depending upon prior knowledge and training; a secondary goal is to inculcate interest in the Language and culture of India for becoming bilingual citizens.
    -- Learners will be able to name, recognize and identify the salient characteristics of various festivals and fairs in India, participate in an interactive manner with children of their age in India - whom they will interact with Skype sessions, tell stories about festivals, discuss among group of peers which festivals and/or fairs they like most/least, and why.
    -- Integrating culture and language in a fluent way, we plan to make learning fun: for example, activities like yoga, singing songs appropriate for particular fairs/festivals, and project-based learning (e.g., making dioramas) will be encouraged; a dress parade will be held with children wearing costumes of their selected states fair/festival and an actual Mela (fair) will be organized by parents on school premises so children can experience the atmosphere of a mela in India.

    Summary

    The STARTALK Student Summer Bridging Academies in Portland offer a three-week intensive language and culture learning experience for 75 K-5 students of Chinese and 38 K-5 students of Russian who are currently enrolled in Portland Public Schools’ Dual Language Immersion programs, will be entering grade K, or plan late entry into a program in fall 2017. The Academies provide 90 hours of instruction based on the theme of “Bridging Cultures through Cuisine.” Student outcomes target a one proficiency level gain, from Novice to Intermediate and, for struggling students, a boost going into the school year. As part of a combined STARTALK program that additionally offers a Teacher Academy, students will be exposed to a curriculum infused by the STARTALK-Endorsed Principles for Effective Teaching and Learning and help solidify Portland Public Schools contribution to a pipeline of students enrolled in the study of critical languages.

    Summary

    The STARTALK Summer Bridging Academy for Teachers coupled with the STARTALK K-5 Bridging Academy in Portland offers total of 23 K-5 Chinese and Russian dual language immersion teachers and aspiring educators the ideal opportunity to bridge pedagogical theory, best practices and real world application. Over 69 hours of training, reflection and evaluation and 72 hours of actual integrated content and language instruction, participants gain critical professional knowledge and skills in immersion pedagogy while collectively building a professional culture of continuous improvement anchored in a data driven learning cycle. Current teachers can earn continuing education credits toward licensure renewal. Dual Language Teacher Fellows enrolled in a Portland Public Schools and Portland State University collaborative alternative licensure program (Portland Dual Language Teacher Fellows) gain significant experience and training as part of their required course work towards full licensure and a masters degree. Aspiring Educators, highly bilingual high school and college students, also receive an invaluable opportunity to be mentored and develop skills and knowledge about working with children.

    Summary

    The STARTALK Student Program, “Russian in the Sky and in Outer Space,” aims to enroll 20 high school and early college Russian heritage students in a four-week intensive STEM-based language program meeting five hours a day for a total of 100 instructional hours. The program intends to increase students’ proficiency in Interpretive Reading, Presentational Speaking, and Presentational Writing. For the Interpersonal Mode, students will increase their linguistic accuracy and sensitivity to cultural norms, e.g., social register and extended linguistic forms not typically encountered in intimate family speech. Students will be able to earn five University of Washington credits by enrolling in RUSS 499 and also have an opportunity to complete language proficiency assessments (AAPPL and ACTFL OPIc and WPT) that high school students may be able to use in order to receive up to four high school competency-based credits, and all students will receive placement results for future study of Russian at the UW.
