University of Massachusetts Boston (Teacher)
Instructional Leadership for Teaching Mandarin
- July 15, 2018 – July 27, 2018: (Face-to-face)
- University of Massachusetts Boston, Boston, MA
Upon completion of this program, participants will be able to skillfully employ the STARTALK-endorsed Principles and ACTFL World-Readiness Standards to implement learner-centered instruction in their classrooms, and will be able to develop a thematically organized curriculum and present it for peer and faculty review at the October follow-up day. The program will recruit a total of twenty K-12 Chinese language teachers, 8 of whom are returning teachers, and 12 who are first-time participants, thus differentiating the two groups. Both groups will be engaged with teaching at Student Camp that serves as an ideal teaching and coaching lab for learning instructional strategies. The Teacher program runs for 10 days between July 16 to 27, from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM each day, with one learning day scheduled in the fall, one follow-up day to review final curriculum units, and a 12-hour professional development as a post-program offered at UMass, totaling 95 hours. The combined student and teacher program will allow for multiple collaborative planning and teaching for both groups of teachers in the Teacher program, and will also provide additional rich opportunities for the Summer Camp students to speak Mandarin in authentic and spontaneous circumstances with adults.
