    Summary

    The STARTALK Arabic Academy at Penn State is an ambitious, multifaceted program for 20 high school and college students to take an introductory college course in Arabic. Starting with no prior knowledge of Arabic, students will reach novice-mid or novice-high level. For 4 weeks (June 17 -July 12, 2019), a multinational instructional team provides instruction in Arabic for 5.5 hours daily Monday through Thursday, an additional 2 hours of afternoon immersion twice a week, and 4.5 hours on Friday, for a total of 113 available instructional hours. Upon successful completion, students earn 4 Penn State credits (one semester of college Arabic). Through student-centered, task-based, and communicative activities, students will become acquainted with Arabic cultures and learn to communicate in Arabic.

    Summary

    The 2019 STARTALK UTA intensive Russian program, entitled Let’s Travel to Russia, is a four-week (120 instructional hours) program for 11th-12th graders and undergraduate students with no prior knowledge of Russian or at a low novice level.
    Through an engaging series of role-plays, this student-centered program will incorporate various topics relevant to traveling to Russia (e.g. planning the trip, at the airport, at the hotel, sightseeing, visiting a host family, eating out, etc.) and will prepare students for a variety of cultural and language situations, allowing for mastering basic literacy and communicative skills in Russian.
    Upon successful completion of the program, the students will achieve a high novice or low intermediate level of Russian language proficiency and will have a basic understanding of Russian culture. Furthermore, students wishing to continue their Russian studies at UTA will be eligible to earn up to eight university credit hours through the university placement test. This test will incur no personal expense on the part of the student. This gives students the opportunity to become part of the UTA language learning community.

    Summary

    The STARTALK Student Program, “Russian in the Sky and in Outer Space,” aims to enroll 20 high school and early college Russian heritage students in a four-week intensive STEM-based language program meeting five hours a day for a total of 100 instructional hours. The program intends to increase students’ proficiency in Interpretive Reading, Presentational Speaking, and Presentational Writing. For the Interpersonal Mode, students will increase their linguistic accuracy and sensitivity to cultural norms, e.g., social register and extended linguistic forms not typically encountered in intimate family speech. Students will be able to earn five University of Washington credits by enrolling in RUSS 499 and also have an opportunity to complete language proficiency assessments that high school students may be able to use in order to receive up to four high school competency-based credits. The language proficiency assessment results may also qualify the students to receive the state Seal of Biliteracy. All students will receive placement results for future study of Russian at the UW.

    Summary

    The STARTALK UNR Chinese Language and Culture Program plans to host 40 local middle and high school students (grades 6-12) and offer two level courses for new students and returning students. The course will last three weeks (June 10-28, 2019), meeting Monday through Friday, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., with 90 instructional hours. Students will study Chinese language through the cultural theme of the Chinese New Year. Upon the successful completion of the STARTALK program, students of Level I will reach Novice Mid and students of level II will reach Novice High. Throughout the program, students will engage in student-centered learning and hands-on activities in the target language.

    Summary

    STARTALK @ Wofford offers 110 instructional hours, blended beginning Chinese language and culture courses (two-week intensive summer classes, 40-hour online learning, literacy engagement activity, or individualized sessions in the fall and early winter) to forty-five 6th-12th graders in Spartanburg, Greenville, nearby counties and other places who have little prior access to Chinese language and culture. The goals are to provide communicative language learning and hands-on cultural activities to promote participants’ learning of Chinese language and culture, and to boost their awareness of the national need to learn a strategic language such as Chinese, the differences/similarities between Chinese language and culture and their base language and culture, and an awareness of the local Chinese community. During the program, participants will receive performance-based language instruction, participate in hands-on cultural activities, and apply what they have learned in tasks that simulate future communication in an exchange program. Participants will engage in all communication modes, and improve their language proficiency 1-2 sublevels higher.

    Summary

    The program uses the best practices of the blended model to offer a five-week summer language and culture program for 10 high school and 10 college level students with little or no background. High school students who do well in the summer session may continue in the program and earn 3 college credits by taking a post-summer 10 week online course. College students with satisfactory learning performance will be accepted into the Chinese Flagship program. The program enables American students to receive quality instruction in Chinese language from trained native speakers in the teacher program while taking part in rich cultural activities. Students will receive up to a total of 110 instructional hours. Students will achieve at least one sub-level of proficiency growth in speaking by the end of the summer program as demonstrated by the STAMP test results.

    Summary

    Environmental Challenges in India and Pakistan: Impact and Solutions serves as the theme for Kean’s 2019 Global Project-Based Learning Program designed for secondary/early post-secondary heritage language learners at the Intermediate/Advanced level who wish to gain higher levels of language and intercultural proficiency through the study of Hindi/Urdu in the real world context of the current public discussion about environmental issues and how to address them. The program is a three-week standards-driven blended learning experience totaling 99-instructional hours focused on using Hindi/Urdu to gain knowledge about and take action on a global issue. Learner outcomes include: demonstration of growth in interpretive reading, presentational writing and presentational speaking, increased linguistic accuracy and use of appropriate verbal and non-verbal strategies in interpersonal and presentational communication, and development of intercultural and global competencies through daily interactions with students from partner schools in India and Pakistan and environmental experts.

    Summary

    This three-week program with a theme ‘Virtual Visit to East Africa’ will have two sections with proficiency level of Novice Mid (Section 1) and Novice High (Section 2). Total number of participants expected is 20 ranging from rising 8th to 12th graders (15 new and 5 returning). They will receive IU pre-college credits. Classes will meet daily for 5 hours for 20 days from June 5 to July 3 and each day will include instructional time, conversation breakout sessions, and simulated field trips. There will be a graduation ceremony on the last day of the program for the students to showcase their achievement to the community, and so total instructional time will be 98 hours. Students will have a daily 45-minute lunch break when they can interact with each other with the help of conversation partners.
