    Summary

    STARTALK @ Wofford offers 149 instructional hours, blended beginning Chinese language and culture courses (two-week intensive summer classes, eight-week summer online learning, and twenty-five individualized sessions in the Fall and Winter) to forty-five 6th-12th graders in Spartanburg, Greenville, nearby counties and other places who have little prior access to Chinese language and culture. The goals are to provide communicative language learning and hands-on cultural activities to promote participants’ learning of Chinese language and culture, and to boost their awareness of the national need to learn a strategic language such as Chinese, the differences/similarities between Chinese language and culture and their base language and culture, and an awareness of the local Chinese community. During the program, participants will receive performance-based language instruction, participate in hands-on cultural activities, and apply what they have learned in tasks that simulate future communication in an exchange program. Participants will engage in all communication modes, and improve their language proficiency 1 to 2 sublevels higher.

    This program is a four-week intensive program that is designed to move students forward in their Chinese language proficiency development. It incorporates learners from grades 1-12 from the Novice to the Intermediate-low levels. In grades 1-6, the students experience a content-related FLES program that introduces them to Chinese language and culture. In grades 7-12, students are placed according to their previous learning experience in level 1-4 classes. There will be approximately five students at the elementary level and twenty at the middle/high school levels for a total of 51 instructional hours for elementary and 102 hours for secondary students. The program will run from June 27-July 20, 2018.

    Summary

    Mississippi Chinese StarTalk 12 will offer four weeks of intensive residential instruction (20 days and 100 contact hours of instruction) to up to 30 high school students from Mississippi and other states who will learn the language in three different levels ranging from Novice Mid to Intermediate Mid. A team of three teachers, one program coordinator, three tutor-counselors and other staff members will oversee the program academically and culturally. During the course of this program, students will learn to appreciate the Chinese language by possessing it and communicating in it, while being immersed in nine communication tasks in both spoken and written Chinese.

    The residential Chinese Language, Culture and Technology Academy will consist of 13 instructional days (117 instructional hours) for high schools students grades 9-12 who are beginning students of Chinese. The outcomes of the Academy are 1) to develop interest in Chinese language and culture among high school students resulting in the establishment of programs across Nebraska 2) to immerse 20 high school students in the Chinese language and culture using innovative digital media for teaching, learning and assessment 3) to pair each high school Chinese learner with a teacher of Chinese to serve as a mentor and 4) to promote continued development of the Chinese language and culture through the LinguaFolio Online designed to assess student achievement and encourage continued study.

    Summary

    The STARTALK Arabic Academy at Penn State is an ambitious, multifaceted program for 20 high school and college students to take an introductory college course in Arabic. For 4 weeks (June-July), a multinational instructional team provides instruction in Arabic for 5.5 hours daily Monday through Thursday, an additional 2 hours of afternoon immersion twice a week, and 4.5 hours on Friday, for a total of 113 available instructional hours. Upon successful completion, students earn 4 Penn State credits (one semester of college Arabic).
    Through student-centered, task-based, and communicative activities, students will become acquainted with Arabic cultures and learn to communicate in Arabic. Starting with no prior knowledge of Arabic, students will reach novice-mid or novice-high level.

    Summary

    OneWorld Now!’s vision is that all young Americans have access to transformative international education. Through our year-round, Seattle-based Global Leadership Program, we integrate critical language learning, leadership training, and study abroad scholarships with a focus on minority and low-income high school youth. Thanks to STARTALK, OWN has offered a three-week Arabic, Chinese, and Korean summer program for each of the last ten years, with follow-on language classes available through the OWN academic yearlong program. In our twelfth year offering the STARTALK summer immersion program, we will hold another three-week-long, non-residential Arabic, Chinese, and Korean language immersion program for non-heritage high school students in Seattle. The program includes 15 six-hour days, for a total of 90 contact hours. The desired outcome of the STARTALK-OWN Summer Language Camp will be to introduce 51 students to Arabic, Korean and Mandarin Chinese, and to motivate them to continue their language and cultural studies.

    Summary

    The STARTALK Student Program, “Russian in the Sky and in Outer Space,” aims to enroll 20 high school and early college Russian heritage students in a four-week intensive STEM-based language program meeting five hours a day for a total of 100 instructional hours. The program intends to increase students’ proficiency in Interpretive Reading, Presentational Speaking, and Presentational Writing. For the Interpersonal Mode, students will increase their linguistic accuracy and sensitivity to cultural norms, e.g., social register and extended linguistic forms not typically encountered in intimate family speech. Students will be able to earn five University of Washington credits by enrolling in RUSS 499 and also have an opportunity to complete language proficiency assessments (AAPPL and ACTFL OPIc and WPT) that high school students may be able to use in order to receive up to four high school competency-based credits, and all students will receive placement results for future study of Russian at the UW.

    Summary

    YingHua Startalk Student Program is a Mandarin Chinese and Chinese culture program good for 36 incoming 3rd to 9th grade students, with diverse socioeconomic, ethnic, and linguistic backgrounds and various Chinese proficiency levels ranging from Novice Low to Intermediate mid. Student participants will be actively engaged in 3 weeks of face-to-face, standards-aligned, science-oriented, culturally-enriching, and fully-immersed and theme-based learning opportunities, followed by 8 weeks of twice-weekly meetings after school, and 4 months of online learning. Beyond the Program, student participants can choose to remain engaged with the vibrant learning community from YingHua International School. Special marketing attention will be focused on the underprivileged areas such as Franklin Park, Somerset, NJ, to ensure that students who have not been exposed to Chinese learning, who are outside of community-based weekend language schools and well-funded high school language programs, are able to benefit from the Startalk program. Strong pedagogical leadership, well-crafted curricular design, the expertise and experience of teachers, together with a low student-teacher ratio, will guarantee the high quality of YingHua Startalk Student Program.

    Summary

    “Lifting the Veil of Ignorance: Education for All in India and Pakistan” serves as the theme for Kean’s 2018 Building Competency in Hindi and Urdu through Global Project-Based Learning Program. This program is designed for secondary/early post-secondary heritage language learners who wish to gain higher levels of language/culture proficiency in contemporary learning environments through the study of Hindi/Urdu in the real world context of the challenges posed in educating “all” children in India/Pakistan. The program will enroll 30 students in a three-week standards-driven blended learning experience totaling 99-instructional hours. Student outcomes include: demonstration of growth in interpretive reading, presentational writing and presentational speaking, increased linguistic accuracy and use of appropriate verbal and non-verbal strategies in interpersonal and presentational communication, and development of intercultural and global competencies through daily interactions with students from partner schools in India and Pakistan focused on gaining knowledge about and taking action on education equity as a local,regional and global issue.
