    Summary

The 2019 STARTALK UTA intensive Russian program, entitled Let’s Travel to Russia, is a four-week (120 instructional hours) program for 11th-12th graders and undergraduate students with no prior knowledge of Russian or at a low novice level.
Through an engaging series of role-plays, this student-centered program will incorporate various topics relevant to traveling to Russia (e.g. planning the trip, at the airport, at the hotel, sightseeing, visiting a host family, eating out, etc.) and will prepare students for a variety of cultural and language situations, allowing for mastering basic literacy and communicative skills in Russian.
Upon successful completion of the program, the students will achieve a high novice or low intermediate level of Russian language proficiency and will have a basic understanding of Russian culture. Furthermore, students wishing to continue their Russian studies at UTA will be eligible to earn up to eight university credit hours through the university placement test. This test will incur no personal expense on the part of the student. This gives students the opportunity to become part of the UTA language learning community.

    Summary

We typically receive upwards of 100 or 150 student requests for every StarTalk program due to our regular year long weekend Urdu classes, and Indus Arts Council's promotion of Pakistani arts, culture and languages in Houston and beyond.
We have settled on a target number of 50 students as a reasonable goal, given our desire is to have a large enough program to demonstrate that there is a significant demand for Urdu in our area and formally pursuing Urdu instruction collectively is a worthwhile and attainable goal.
The proficiency level for our students is Novice mid to Intermediate low. The program is 3 weeks long with 90 instructional hours.
Currently with four instructors and four junior instructors, we will be able to offer four sections of Urdu instruction in which the average class size will be 12 to 13 students and the teacher-to student ratio (including junior instructors, who will be actively involved in instruction) will be approximately 1 to 6.
This class size will offer students a quality learning experience and the potential to develop a sense of community and belonging with their peers. Participants will also take part in theater (performed in Urdu) and take part in music/songs in Urdu to a live audience.

They will be divided into three language groups. The program will have two sections for Arabic, two sections for Portuguese and one section for Russian. The proficiency level for Arabic and Russian is novice-low/mid. For Portuguese, the proficiency level is novice-high/ intermediate low . We noticed that students in this region learn Portuguese easily and quickly since the majority of students speak Spanish in this region and there are a lot of similarities between Spanish and Portuguese. The program offers six hours daily for fifteen days providing a total of ninety instructional hours. Summer language acquisition will be maintained and expanded during the subsequent school year, through the online portion of the program.
