    Summary

    Our program outcome is to recruit 15 fluent speakers of Chinese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish at the novice teaching level (pre-service) to take nine undergraduate quarter credits towards Washington state teacher certification. Teacher candidates will be enrolled in one of CityU of Seattle's Alternative Routes to teacher certification program. The face to face part of the program runs 15 days (June 29-July 19), with a pre-program component (June 22-28) for a total of 90 instructional hours, not including outside assignments and the pre-program online component. Within the program are 9 half days of lab school in which teacher candidates teach in the morning and attend certification classes in the afternoon. During lab school, instructors and master mentors observe and note teaching behaviors for discussion during a working lunch. After the summer program, teacher candidates will take an additional 14 credits during the academic year, completing student teaching by the end of spring quarter and taking and passing the edTPA in June. Teacher candidates will then apply for a Washington State Residency Teaching Certificate. During the certification program, teacher candidates will also be eligible to take the Designated World Language endorsement test to be certified to teach Chinese, Korean. Portuguese or Spanish.

    Summary

    NEIU's STARTALK 2019: Success and Access through Multilingualism Initiative (SAMI) plans to offer a summer Arabic language learning program to 30 K-3 (age 5-9 years) heritage and non-heritage learners who will be linguistically, ethnically, religiously, racially and socioeconomically diverse. The focus will be on students from underserved communities who have minimal access to second language learning programs inside or outside of school. The program will run from the 1st to the 31st of July 2019, for approximately 105 hours over the course of five weeks. Through STEAM-based curriculum, students will participate in language and culture classes infused in meaningful content of life of animals lives in their communities. The instruction will not only provide them with novice-mid Arabic proficiency, but also equip them with foundational skills for learning such as critical thinking, inquiry, and exploration. Targeted outcomes for these learners are an elementary awareness of the culture(s) associated with the language, an enthusiasm for learning the language as well as the ability to 1) introduce and describe themselves, 2) name and describe animals, animal environments, and distinguishing features/characteristics, and 3) express their dis/likes, desires, and needs (as well as those of animals) in Arabic.

    Summary

    The STARTALK 2019: Summer Arabic Language Teacher Training Program (SALTT) aims to train a group of approximately 15 Arabic language educators, heritage and non-heritage, of elementary age students in the strategies of STEAM-based language instruction, the STARTALK principles, and teacher effectiveness for language learning critera. The outcomes of the program are twofold: First, the program will develop teachers who are competent in implementing STARTALK-standards-based Arabic language instruction in their classrooms. Second, the candidates will complete 94 instructional hours of content learning and practical application of STEAM-based Arabic through a 9 week blended program where teachers spend an initial 3 weeks in an online course exploring STEAM research and discussing the standards and principles of language learning before they participate in 6 weeks of curriculum design, material development, and clinical experiences in the SAMI practicum. Through their participation in the SAMI practicum, the teacher participants will ultimately learn how to 1) prepare a STEAM-based Arabic language and culture curriculum, 2) create and implement units and learning plans using backwards design and a theme, and 3) differentiate learning for diverse learners while keeping them engaged.

    Summary

    ALEFE summer program “Celebrations of Arab Nations” is a 18 days summer camp intended to allow twenty heritage and non-heritage students to develop both their communication skills in Arabic and their cultural awareness about the Arab world. In a Montessori classroom set-up, students will be exposed to the various ways in which Arab nations celebrate two special occasions: weddings and baby showers. They will acquire new knowledge about the way these special occasions are celebrated in terms of food, costumes and social figures. Through the study of the two celebrations, the program is to allow K-2nd grade students with limited or no proficiency in Arabic to interact using simple vocabulary and sentences to communicate with an authentic audience and to use their new acquired knowledge to create and present two mock celebrations to others. Following the program’s 90 hours of instructions, students will be able not only to compare the similarities and differences between cultural practices in the US and in the Arab World, but to also realize how internally diverse an apparently monolithic culture could be.

    Summary

    The STARTALK Student Summer Program in Kansas City offers three-week intensive language and culture learning experience to 60 learners from grades 3-8, both true beginners and students with some prior proficiency in Chinese, in greater Kansas City metro area. Underserved, marginalized and rural population are encouraged specifically to apply and participate.

    Based on the students’ age group, the program will be divided into two sections, one for rising 3rd - 5th graders, one for rising 6th - 8th graders. Each section is divided into a Level 1 class for novice learners and a Level 2 class for returning students or heritage learners.

    Students will attend six-and-half hours of activities daily consisting of three-hour task-based language learning classes, one-hour cultural seminar, and hands-on activities, half-hour morning Chinese exercises, half-hour separate group activity, half-an-hour recess, and a one-hour complimentary lunch, for a total of 91 instructional hours for three weeks.

    During our three-week intensive study, students will reach communicative proficiency, exemplifying the four language skills (speaking, listening, reading and writing) via our standards-based, student-centered, language-immersed and culturally-enriched curricula.

    The STARTALK Arabic Academy at Penn State is an ambitious, multifaceted program for 20 high school and college students to take an introductory college course in Arabic. Starting with no prior knowledge of Arabic, students will reach novice-mid or novice-high level. For 4 weeks (June 17 -July 12, 2019), a multinational instructional team provides instruction in Arabic for 5.5 hours daily Monday through Thursday, an additional 2 hours of afternoon immersion twice a week, and 4.5 hours on Friday, for a total of 113 available instructional hours. Upon successful completion, students earn 4 Penn State credits (one semester of college Arabic). Through student-centered, task-based, and communicative activities, students will become acquainted with Arabic cultures and learn to communicate in Arabic.

    This professional development program, designed for 10 current and prospective teachers of Arabic at middle school, high school, and post-secondary levels, uses a three-part blended learning structure: (1) a 3-week pre-seminar online component (estimated 20 hours' instructional time), June 1-20; (2) a 7-day residential seminar (54 instructional hours), held at Penn State's University Park Campus, June 22-28, during which the teachers participate in teaching high school and college students who are taking an introductory Arabic course at Penn State; and (3) a post-seminar online component (estimated 7 hours), July 7- 12; for 81 hours total. The broad outcome at which we aim is to contribute to the national effort to expand instructional capacity in critical languages, including Arabic. More specifically, by the end of the program, participants will have demonstrated their abilities to plan and successfully present standards-based learning experiences in the target language; and through final portfolios they will also have demonstrated a mindset for transfer of their STARTALK learning and a knowledge of career pathways, including certification or further degrees where relevant.

    Summary

    The 2019 STARTALK UTA intensive Russian program, entitled Let’s Travel to Russia, is a four-week (120 instructional hours) program for 11th-12th graders and undergraduate students with no prior knowledge of Russian or at a low novice level.
    Through an engaging series of role-plays, this student-centered program will incorporate various topics relevant to traveling to Russia (e.g. planning the trip, at the airport, at the hotel, sightseeing, visiting a host family, eating out, etc.) and will prepare students for a variety of cultural and language situations, allowing for mastering basic literacy and communicative skills in Russian.
    Upon successful completion of the program, the students will achieve a high novice or low intermediate level of Russian language proficiency and will have a basic understanding of Russian culture. Furthermore, students wishing to continue their Russian studies at UTA will be eligible to earn up to eight university credit hours through the university placement test. This test will incur no personal expense on the part of the student. This gives students the opportunity to become part of the UTA language learning community.

    The STARTALK Student Program, “Russian in the Sky and in Outer Space,” aims to enroll 20 high school and early college Russian heritage students in a four-week intensive STEM-based language program meeting five hours a day for a total of 100 instructional hours. The program intends to increase students’ proficiency in Interpretive Reading, Presentational Speaking, and Presentational Writing. For the Interpersonal Mode, students will increase their linguistic accuracy and sensitivity to cultural norms, e.g., social register and extended linguistic forms not typically encountered in intimate family speech. Students will be able to earn five University of Washington credits by enrolling in RUSS 499 and also have an opportunity to complete language proficiency assessments that high school students may be able to use in order to receive up to four high school competency-based credits. The language proficiency assessment results may also qualify the students to receive the state Seal of Biliteracy. All students will receive placement results for future study of Russian at the UW.

    The STARTALK Teacher Program, “Preparing Language Teachers for the 21st Century,” will prepare 10 native (or near native) speakers of Russian, Arabic, or Spanish to teach in a standards and content-based program, focused on developing communicative proficiency and accuracy in students learning these languages and on integrating STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) into language instruction. The program is designed to teach participants the STARTALK principles and standards-based language teaching and curriculum development, as well as the content knowledge needed to pass the Washington Educator Skills Test – Endorsement (WEST-E) for World Languages. Teachers will be able to work toward obtaining a P-12 World Language Endorsement for teaching these languages in Washington K-12 public schools. The program also provides scholarship assistance to complete the required assessments (WEST-E and ACTFL OPIc and WPT). In 2019, the 75-hour program will offer six UW credits of EDC&I 495 from the University of Washington College of Education and will run from July 29, 2019 to August 9, 2019 (online) and August 12, 2019 through August 23, 2019 in the face-to-face component.
