Curriculum Resources for Student Programs

Return to Program Resources

STARTALK provides student programs with a curriculum template, knowing that a common template design will facilitate the sharing of units, instructional strategies, and quality materials. The common template is designed to capture best practices in curriculum, instruction, and assessment. All programs have the option of designing their own curriculum, or they may opt to use or modify one of the STARTALK model curricula for student programs.

Curriculum Development

The STARTALK curriculum template for student programs supports programs in using backward design and the NCSSFL-ACTFL Can-Do Statements to develop quality curricula for their programs. A development guide and review questions are provided to support student programs throughout each stage of the curriculum development process.

Key Learning Experience Development

Developing key learning experiences is not a required part of the curriculum development process. However, programs may wish to expand their curricular planning by developing key learning experiences for their program. Key learning experiences further unpack the lesson can-do statements by outlining vocabulary and language chunks for each lesson can-do statement, and also provide a corresponding check for learning.

Model Curricula: Student Programs

STARTALK has created model curricula to provide support for student programs in the curriculum development process. Those involved in creating the models drew upon existing program curricula, and the models capture best practices observed in various STARTALK programs during site visits. The STARTALK model curricula are intended as examples. Programs will have to adjust what is provided to meet the specific needs of their students. The intention is to offer representative samples of learning experiences, with the understanding that teachers will adapt the sample experiences to meet the various linguistic and cultural requirements of their individual classrooms. The model curricula available for download below provide include completed stages 1, 2, 3 of the backward design process and may be adapted to any language. Additional support is provided through outlines of language-specific key learning experiences that expand the lesson can-do statements identified in stage 3 by outlining vocabulary and language chunks for each learning target with corresponding checks for learning.

Sample Curricula: Student Programs

STARTALK has collected program curricula utilized by previous STARTALK programs to serve as samples and provide support and inspiration to student and teacher programs in their curriculum development process. These samples were provided to STARTALK by programs serving a variety of age groups and proficiency levels, and were recommended for sharing by STARTALK team leaders. These curricula are intended as examples only. They have been collected over the course of several years and may not utilize current STARTALK curricula formats or models.
