Discover Russian is a four week Russian Language and Culture immersion program offered to rising 6th-12th grade students. This is a non-residential program that meets Monday – Friday from 9:00am – 3:00pm at Holmes Middle School, Fairfax County, VA from June 29 – July 24, 2015. Transportation is not available but lunch is provided daily. Discover Russian offers two levels of instruction: Beginning (Level I) for students who are just beginning their study of Russian of Russian and Intermediate (Level II) for students who have had previous experience in learning or speaking Russian. Discover Russian: Integrating Technology into the Teaching and Learning of Russian through Standards-Based Instruction

This standards-based course is designed to provide teachers with the necessary skills to integrate technology and current pedagogical theory into the teaching and learning of Russian. Participants will also learn how technology can help their students increase language proficiency, and how to develop assessments that target the three learning modes. Other discussion topics will include how to use technology tools to create comprehensible input in classes that leads to comprehensible output, as well as more advanced elements of differentiated instruction. Micro-teaching and observation will be integral parts of the course. A two day MOPI (Modified Oral Proficiency Interview) training workshop will be included in this program.

STARTALK Chinese and Arabic Program for Middle School Students

The STARTALK Arabic and Chinese Program is intended for students currently in grades 6-8 who have not studied or have limited knowledge of these languages. The goal of this program is to motivate students to begin or continue the study of Arabic and Chinese. The program can accommodate up to 25 students per language. Focus of study will be on understanding main aspects of target culture and communicating about everyday needs and experiences through field trips, hands-on activities, folklore, and technology. Students will be immersed in the target language from day one and will participate in exciting hands-on activities that will allow them to use the language for meaningful purposes. Our program gives first priority to Arlington Public Schools’ students. Once our registration period ends, on May 8th, non-Arlington residents will be considered if space is still available. Non-Arlington residents' applications will be placed on a waiting list during the registration period and will be considered for the program if the opportunity permits. Northern Virginia is home to a large and vibrant Urdu-speaking community that is enthusiastic about maintaining its language and culture. And we offers a colorful celebration of Urdu and the diversity of Pakistan. The DC9 Urdu STARTALK Program will provide instruction to 50 upper elementary, middle, and high school students, based on the theme “A Trip to Pakistan.” In addition to providing another quality learning experience, we also aim to further mobilize the community around the goal of establishing a more regular and sustained Urdu program in our community. This year we are adding an advanced level class to our program and are planning to prepare our students for the Fairfax County Credit Exam for World Languages. We are hopeful that by preparing some of students for the county language proficiency exam and having support from the community and local leaders we could persuade school officials to consider introducing Urdu in local public schools. Considering the positive impact of art projects on students' language learning we will include the art project in our curriculum this year as well. We will hire an internationally recognized truck artist, Haider Ali to conduct workshops on the Pakistani truck art incorporated in our curriculum.

Transitioning Korean Native and Heritage Teachers into the Culture of US Schooling

Through a carefully designed blended sequence of activities, this institute will provide participants multiple opportunities to explore and examine introspectively critical considerations that directly influence transitioning to teaching in a learner-centered classroom. The program is designed to actively engage 30 teachers in six professional development workshops focused on learner-centered approaches to language teaching as highly effective tools for addressing pedagogical issues inherent in less commonly taught languages. Themes identified extend knowledge of Second Language Acquisition and planning for standards-based language instruction; assessment; incorporating technology to facilitate learning; integrating differentiating of instruction for diverse learners; and addressing effective classroom management techniques. Using the TELL framework, this summer program will focus on the Planning TELL Domains and Criteria Statements. The professional development workshops and online curriculum will highlight the needs of heritage and native language teachers and learners as well as culturally, linguistically, and cognitively diverse learners, using learner-centered instruction as a research source. This program will use the Teacher Effectiveness for Language Learning (TELL) domains and the supporting TELL criteria for designing program goals as well as the STELLA Modules for Teacher Develop (Planning). These goals will also reflect the StarTalk-endorsed Principles for Effective Teaching and Learning.

The Mudra Arts Center Hindi STARTALK Program is a program for 52 elementary and middle school students to be held July 6th - July 25th six hours a day concluding with a graduation ceremony. The program will be based on the theme "Me and My World: Expanding Spheres." The program incorporates STEM content and will be based on the 5 C’s. There will be a special focus on natural life sciences and health, and target culture related to this focus will be integrated in each unit. Age-appropriate activities such as yoga, arts & crafts, sports, and stories will also contribute to making it a fun experience. The program includes a thematically integrated field trip to a museum and daily authentic meals integrated with the theme of nutrition. Our program will offer Hindi on a continuing basis after the summer program through weekly classes.

NOVASTARTALK is a face to face workshop that features standards-based instruction on the appropriate use of technology to teach World Languages in STARTALK programs and in the home institutions of STARTALK teachers. The faculty members of NOVASTARTALK are known or their expertise in technology-enhanced language teaching and learning. The focus of the workshop is the technology toolkit that each participant puts together over the course of a week of instruction. This toolkit allows the teachers to implement a similar program at their home institutions. There are two seperate NOVASTARTALK sessions with different applications and foci. Teachers are encouraged to sign up for week one if they have never been to NOVASTARTALK before. They are encouraged to sign up for week two if they are proficient in basic technologies or if they are returning to NOVASTARTALK after a previous workshop. Participants should not sign up for NOVASTARTALK unless they are able to attend from 9-5 for the five consecutive days of the session . Virginia STARTALK Chinese Teacher Academy

The Virginia STARTALK Chinese Teacher Academy (VSCTA), first launched in 2008, will continue to partner with the Virginia STARTALK Chinese Student Academy (VSCSA) to provide opportunities for professional development and career advancement for novice and experienced teachers of Mandarin Chinese. The 17-day residential program (July 8-24) integrates and balances theory and practice through both regular and virtual classes in a well-sequenced blended model. Upon the completion of the program, participants will receive three to five graduate course credits. Specifically, they will receive intensive training and practicum experience, integrate technology and culture into teaching, participate in developing an effective blended learning model, implement strategies for creating a Chinese immersion setting, and develop authentic tasks and performance-based assessments. The capstone of the development of the trainees’ competence in teaching Chinese as a foreign language is the completion of an E-portfolio that documents the trainees’ extensive learning experiences in launching or advancing their careers. Each teacher participant will receive a $4,250 scholarship to cover 3-credit tuition and other academic costs of the program and pay $300 for program costs. Virginia STARTALK Chinese Student Academy

The Virginia STARTALK Chinese Student Academy (VSCSA) will continue to partner with the nationally reputed VSCTA teacher program to promote Chinese language and culture learning in the commonwealth of Virginia. The 10-day VSCSA student program (July 13-23) will enable novice learners to experience blended learning with a combination of face-to-face instruction and hybrid learning in flipped classrooms. Language immersion morning sessions are strengthened by afternoon sessions featuring tutorial sessions, consolidation individual and group learning, and cultural immersion activities. Upon the completion of the program, student participants will develop a positive can-do attitude, attain proficiency at the novice-mid level, and move toward novice-high level across three communicative modes. The capstone of the development of student participants’ experiences is the completion of an E-portfolio and individual website that documents their extensive learning experiences in Chinese language and culture immersion. 2015 Virginia Beach STARTALK Summer Academies

This is a long-standing free four-week immersive program which offers four classes of elementary Chinese for rising fifth grade students and one class of advanced Chinese for returning rising sixth grade students. This is the first year that there will be two classes of elementary Russian offered to rising fifth grade students as well. For the elementary classes, students are selected by lottery equally from each of the three sections of the city (60 for Chinese and 30 for Russian). Participants attend class four hours Monday-Thursday, with enrichment instruction in the arts (folkloric dance/martial arts and painting/calligraphy). In addition, students will enjoy an afternoon field trip to further explore the respective language and culture studied. In February of the following year, participants will be invited to after-school post-sessions to continue their studies. The Chinese post-sessions focus on celebration of the Chinese New Year and culminate in a field trip to a heritage community Spring Festival. The Russian post-sessions bring students to a local high school to enjoy Russian food, dance, and crafts with the high school Russian students.
