Startalk Ohio Hindi Summer Camp 2015

The STARTALK Ohio Hindi Summer Camp will provide Hindi language and Indian culture instruction to 50 students entering grades 3 through 8. All major costs associated with the program are funded by a STARTALK grant. The program will provide 15 days of instructions for a total of 90 hours. Instructions will be based on the theme “Bharat Jao, Bharat Jano” (Go to India, Know India). The program goal is for students to learn to carry out a variety of real-world tasks at a performance level of a sub-level above their incoming level.This will be achieved by interactive instructions through playing games, dancing, yoga, music, sports, and arts & crafts activities, etc. It will include a day of field trip to a cultural center, restaurant or shopping center to give the students a real life experience. The program will target heritage and non heritage students.The program will be from July 7 to July 25, 9.00 a.m. to 3.00 p.m. The program will continue to provide continued learning resources and support to the participants through online as well as face to face activities.

This is a four-week residential immersion program targeting rising juniors and seniors in Ohio high schools and is designed for new learners of Russian. Housed in the Honors College on Kent State University's main campus, the program offers task-based instruction in a culture-rich environment. The summer program is supplemented by an academic year follow-up component, upon successful completion of which participants receive five college credits.

2015 STARTALK-CHELER Chinese Leadership Program for Chinese Heritage School Teachers

The STARTALK-CHELER Chinese Leadership Program is aimed at expanding the conceptual understanding and practical teaching skills of experienced teacher leaders of community-based Chinese heritage schools/programs in the United States. Participants will work in two cohorts, one for returning STARTALK participants and the other for those who are new to the program. The differentiated learning will provide opportunities for stimulating exchanges about principles of teaching and learning, lessons learned, and successes experienced. This residential program consists of three parts: a one-month pre-workshop online session, a one-week onsite workshop at the University of Toledo, and a post-workshop online forum. Participants will leave the STARTALK-CHELER program with new knowledge and effective strategies of developing student-centered, standard-based, and thematically organized lessons to build a learning community through technology. The STARTALK-CHLER program, including room, board and tuition, is free for qualifying applicants. Participants receive six continuing education units upon successful completion of the program.
