The STARTALK : Asia Institute Crane House Chinese Language Program is a summer language program focused on providing high quality Chinese language and cultural learning to rising 5th, 6th and 7th grade students in the Louisville, Kentucky region. In this 3-week program students are immersed in Chinese language and culture for the duration through projects and group activities. Activities include traditional arts such as paper folding and calligraphy, traditional dances, tai chi, and music. They will also explore contemporary China through its cities, growing economy, environment and the arts. Students will use their own Kentucky heritage as a lens to compare and contrast both cultures. During the course of the program, students learn language and culture, then demonstrate their knowledge in a final program for educators, family and friends. Students who achieve qualified scores on the standardized testing may apply for high school language credit.

•June 15, 2015 – June 26, 2015: Program segment (face-to-face) Tates Creek Middle School, Lexington, KY Fayette County Public Schools (FCPS) will once again host the Fayette STARTALK Chinese Summer Program, an innovative summer learning experience for up to 100 elementary students. Participating students will be those rising first through sixth grade students enrolled in the district’s sequential, content-related and Kentucky World Language standards-based Chinese language programs during the regular school year. The primary learning goal is to sustain and enhance participating students’ current levels of proficiency, while providing them with opportunities to experience authentic Chinese cultural activities in an immersion environment. In this standards-driven Mandarin Chinese summer learning program, students will engage in relevant, age-appropriate communicative tasks that emerge from non-academic areas of interest and cultural importance as well as from academic content in other curricular areas. Students’ acquisition of Mandarin structures will develop naturally from the communicative tasks and assessments designed around the curricular theme, "Discover China Through its Regions." Students will demonstrate their progress toward developing skills in interpersonal, conversational communication; interpretive listening; and presentational speaking.
