STARTALK 2015 Arabic and Chinese Program

Thirty Chicago Public School high school students will participate in an intensive Arabic and Chinese summer institute at the University of Chicago from June 29, 2015 through July 24, 2015. Courses will be taught by University of Chicago Arabic and Mandarin Chinese language instructors, running Monday through Friday, 10 A.M. – 3:00 P.M. CPS students will be selected by the University for participation based on application materials, school recommendations, and program director’s guidance. Students in the Arabic program must have completed Arabic Level I or II, and students in the Chinese program must have completed the two-year high school requirement of prior study of the Chinese language. All participants are required to enroll in the next level of language instruction the fall of 2015. Students will be enrolled as non-degree students at the University of Chicago and will receive a letter grade for their work, equivalent in content and contact hours to one undergraduate course.

In the past six summers, Consortium of Illinois Language Schools has offered very intense and standard based Chinese Immersion language programs to over 1,000 students in 15 school districts. This year the student program will run 90 hour long to 4th to 8th grade students in various school districts in Chicago Suburbs. Classes are immersed with cultural activities to enrich the language learning experiences. The program is costumed to students with the levels from novice-low to novice-Mid to prepare them for future studies, also it is served as training platform for students from our previous teacher program.

Lewis University Star Talk 2015

  • 2015 STARTALK Summer Language Institute at Lewis University, , Romeoville, IL

Lewis University offers its four-week summer Startalk program to 30 rising high school and college students interested in learning Russian or Chinese. The program will immerse its participants into a culturally rich target language environment and will offer its students a variety of engaging activities under the umbrella theme "A trip to St. Petersburg/Taipei." Students will learn how to get around the major Taiwanese/Russian city, learn about places of interest, engage in basic conversation with "locals", conduct simple transactions etc. This non-residential program will run from Monday, June 15th till Friday, July 10th, Monday through Friday. Student will stay on the campus daily from 9 am to 2:30 pm (except on Fridays when school ends at 12 noon). Classroom instruction will be conducted from 9 am to 1:30 pm with 30 minutes lunch break at the University Dining Room. From 1:30 to 2:30 pm on all week days, except Friday, students will be involved in a variety of culturally-oriented activities that will require the use of the target language. Students who successfully complete the program will earn three tuition-free transferable college credits.

North Central College’s STARTALK Chinese Immersion Experience

North Central College STARTALK students will explore and engage in Chinese language learning within the context of a professional environment. This course is designed for students with 1-2 years of Chinese learning experience. Topics to be explored include job interviewing, asking questions in a business context, introducing oneself and engaging in appropriate conversation for the professional world, using modern technology, and the importance of teamwork. This summer program aims at providing students with opportunities to enhance their language skills and to learn about China’s major industries, customs and traditions, as well as explore similarities and differences between STEM-based careers in China and the United States. The format of the program will be loosely modeled on the popular reality shows The Apprentice and Shark Tank. Students will work in teams to develop strategies to market a product in China and will demonstrate what they “can-do” at weekly Board Meetings.
