This program aims to provide meaningful, motivating, and cultural Chinese experiences to elementary-age learners. The key priority is to increase students' Chinese language proficiency and desire to continue learning. Our student-centered, theme-based, and backward-designed program, “STARTALK: China in Baltimore,” teaches Chinese language and culture via a curriculum based on a central question: What if Baltimore city became a city in China, Shanghai perhaps? What would students need to get around? What kind of food would they be exposed to? Where could they go visit and how would they get there? These among many other questions will be answered throughout our summer program. Students will also get the opportunity to experience a taste of China. Students for "STARTALK: China in Baltimore" will prepare authentic Chinese food and eat food authentic to local Chinese cities. They will also explore the local Baltimore area with the mindset that they are in a Chinese city. Through exposure to these types of activities students will have the chance to compare American and Chinese culture. The urban location of The New Century School (historic Fells Point) is an ideal place for students to experience diversity in culture and a wealth of city landmarks.

The NYU StarTalk Immersion Training Program for Teachers of Chinese (1-6) for pre- and in-service teachers of Chinese is designed to give teachers an essential understanding of the theory and best practices of Chinese immersion and FLES education. The core of the NYU StarTalk Immersion Training Program for Teachers of Chinese (1-6) is the summer course “Teaching Foreign Language to Elementary School Children” (FLES), which is held July 6 - 24, with additional content designed exclusively for teachers of Chinese. Four fall workshops concentrate on Chinese immersion education. Participants may choose from 2 strands. The first strand offers a 50% scholarship to participants who wish to earn 3 graduate credits in FLES education. These 3 credits are required for teachers holding NYS Teaching 7-12 certification to receive the NYS extension for teaching in grades 1-6. Both strands will participate in a series of fall workshops focusing on Chinese immersion education.

North Central College STARTALK students will explore and engage in Chinese language learning within the context of a professional environment. This course is designed for students with 1-2 years of Chinese learning experience. Topics to be explored include job interviewing, asking questions in a business context, introducing oneself and engaging in appropriate conversation for the professional world, using modern technology, and the importance of teamwork. This summer program aims at providing students with opportunities to enhance their language skills and to learn about China’s major industries, customs and traditions, as well as explore similarities and differences between STEM-based careers in China and the United States. The format of the program will be loosely modeled on the popular reality shows The Apprentice and Shark Tank. Students will work in teams to develop strategies to market a product in China and will demonstrate what they “can-do” at weekly Board Meetings.

NOVASTARTALK is a face to face workshop that features standards-based instruction on the appropriate use of technology to teach World Languages in STARTALK programs and in the home institutions of STARTALK teachers. The faculty members of NOVASTARTALK are known or their expertise in technology-enhanced language teaching and learning. The focus of the workshop is the technology toolkit that each participant puts together over the course of a week of instruction. This toolkit allows the teachers to implement a similar program at their home institutions. There are two seperate NOVASTARTALK sessions with different applications and foci. Teachers are encouraged to sign up for week one if they have never been to NOVASTARTALK before. They are encouraged to sign up for week two if they are proficient in basic technologies or if they are returning to NOVASTARTALK after a previous workshop. Participants should not sign up for NOVASTARTALK unless they are able to attend from 9-5 for the five consecutive days of the session . OneWorld Now! STARTALK Summer Language Camp

The 9th annual OneWorld Now! STARTALK Summer Language Camp will be held June 22 to July 10 at Impact Hub Seattle in Pioneer Square. This program is for high school students only (including rising freshmen and newly graduated seniors) and is intended for students with no prior experience in the target language. Participants may choose between Modern Standard Arabic and Mandarin Chinese and will meet from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., Monday through Friday (including Independence Day). From day one, classes will be taught with little to no English. In addition to learning to read and write in a new alphabet, students will gain the vocabulary and grammatical knowledge to identify and describe a wide range of objects or activities in their daily lives. The program will also include cultural performances, art workshops, and field trips, as well as workshops designed to develop skills for 21st-century global leadership. Students will display their new language skills for parents and community members in a culminating Final Showcase. This program can accommodate up to 18 students in each language. Students from outside Seattle are welcome to apply, but they will be responsible for all costs associated with traveling to and staying in Seattle.

The University of Colorado's Program for Teaching East Asia will host a STARTALK program for 20 Chinese language teachers working in middle and high school settings around the US. This blended program will provide teachers with a thorough understanding of and practical experience with implementing effective learning technologies appropriate for the secondary Chinese language classroom. Based on the premise that the sustainability of both a program and its teachers increasingly depends on the teachers possessing skills and behaviors of a digital-age professional, this STARTALK program will introduce the theory, standards, frameworks, knowledge, and practice necessary for incorporating into the curriculum, with comfort and ease, a range of learner-centered technology tools. Program participants will work with language technology specialists, experienced Chinese language curriculum designers, and master teachers to gain a clear understanding of and competency in a variety of technologies around which they can create effective and engaging lessons. The program will consist of asynchronous online learning in mid-June, a residential institute in late June, and asynchronous online time in early July to complete a technology portfolio.

The StarTalk: Queens University of Charlotte Summer Institute in Chinese and Arabic is a three-week, 105 hour non-residential program for rising 9th graders through recently graduated 12th graders that takes place from July 6th to July 24th from 8:30AM to 3:30PM with lunch and snack provided. Undergraduate credit (3 hours) may be granted upon program completion, at which point students will demonstrate proficiency in Mandarin or Arabic at the beginning, intermediate or advanced level with a focus on real-world communication skills. Using a variety of authentic materials and supporting technologies - such as Skype conversations with native-speaking tutors abroad - students will engage in culturally significant communicative activities in an immersion setting in class, in the community, and online. Sixty-five students will be admitted in a competitive application process including essays and a teacher recommendation. Prior knowledge of Mandarin or Arabic not required. Heritage language learners and advanced students are welcome.

The Language Acquisition Resource Center (LARC) at San Diego State University (SDSU) will offer a two-week residential teacher training program for twenty three beginning level and five emerging (intermediate) level teachers (K-16). The program will be conducted at two levels to accommodate both beginning and emerging teachers. By the end of the program the participants will be able to effectively apply contemporary theories of second language acquisition (SLA) to their instruction; incorporate the principles of backward design; the five-step lesson plan; and ACTFL standards to their lessons and curricula. The five emerging participants will be given more practicum opportunity during the workshop. They will work closely with the Language Group Leaders in the morning to prepare materials and lessons. In the afternoons they will assist/coach the beginning level participants. The program will be offered via a two-week (80 hours) on-site workshop. Interested participants will earn three units graduate level credit and will be offered an opportunity to attend an extra 40 hours of continuing teacher education offered by the California World Language Project onsite, or online.

The Seattle Public Schools (SPS) Startalk program will start a new Cohort 9 of nine teacher candidates on an alternate route pathway to teacher certification in the state of Washington. Certification coursework is provided by Pacific Lutheran University. Languages served are Arabic, Chinese, and Korean. Cohort 9 teacher candidates will take three, two credit graduate level courses: EDUC 544 Socio-cultural Foundations of Education, EDUC 556 Secondary Schools, EDUC 583 Exceptionalities. The returning cohort, Cohort 8, consisting of 7 teacher candidates, will take two courses: EDUC 561 Secondary Methods (4 credits) and EDUC 563 Internship Seminar (2 credits). Those who have not passed or taken the WEST B tests of reading, writing and math will also attend a workshop on tips for passing the WEST B writing and reading. Week 1 consists of certification coursework in preparation for the following two weeks of morning lab school. Weeks 2 and 3, teacher candidates will teach K-4th grade children Arabic, or Chinese or Korean in the mornings. Course instructors and teacher candidates will rotate observation and feedback responsibilities. Afternoons will be spent debriefing and taking additional certification coursework.

This program is for "true beginners" of Mandarin middle school students who intend to study the language and culture either in their middle or high school years and is not appropriate for heritage speakers of Chinese. The program will engage learners in exploring themes related to the Silk Road and will equip them with the linguistic and cultural experiences that will enable them to successfully interact with each other as "Silk Road Ambassadors" and apply their knowledge of Chinese language and cultural practices.. The program is especially designed to introduce students to the Mandarin language, tones and cultural perspectives, practices and products and prepare them for a successful experience in continuing to study Chinese in the 2015-16 academic year. This residential program, Leadership Development for Teachers of STARTALK Languages and Cultures, is especially designed for teachers who have experienced the highest level of success in implementing the STARTALK-Endorsed Principles in their classrooms and provide them with the leadership skills that will enable them to play leadership roles in their schools and districts to advance the mission of STARTALK. These roles include planning programs and curricula, leading professional development activities, becoming cooperating/master teachers for teacher candidates, mentoring and coaching their colleagues to implement best practices in their classrooms and serving in different committees and task forces designed to strengthen teaching and learning of the STARTALK languages. The program will continue to strengthen the participants’ linguistic and cultural knowledge and especially their pedagogical practices, but will concentrate its efforts on building a cadre of teachers who can play leadership roles in program planning, curriculum development, assessment practices in their districts, schools, and local organizations, including the designing and planning of STARTALK programs. A Virtual Trip to East Asia: STARTALK Summer Programs in Chinese and Korean

They will follow two characters on a trip to China/ Korea and learn to use the target language with authentic materials and in culture-rich contexts. Designed for any teacher as well as instructional leads in STARTALK programs, this online course will help participants use resources identified by the Teacher Effectiveness for Language Learning Project to increase their effectiveness. Participants will be able to complete up to 100 hours of professional learning through four online modules. Module 1 will provide an in-depth look at choosing learning targets not only focused on language and cultural competencies, but also how to develop “LEARNING TARGETS” that allow learners to connect and compare to other content areas, and demonstrate their learning in their community. Module 2 will provide the opportunity to see how carefully identified learning targets ease a teachers implementation of strategies for “USING THE TARGET LANGUAGE” and providing comprehensible input. Module 3 will ask participants to develop an understanding of the role of assessment in meeting the National Standards through the development of their own “PERFORMANCE ASSESSMENTS.” Module 4 will ask participants to reflect on their own effectiveness and develop a growth plan based on the “TELL PROJECT”. Each module includes videos, readings, threaded discussions, coaching sessions, and online chats with expert consultants. Mississippi StarTalk 9 is a program funded by the Federal government to provide high school students with intensive instruction in Chinese on the Ole Miss campus in Oxford during the Second Summer Session. In addition to studying Chinese inside and outside of the classroom, students will participate in a cultural program introducing them to China, its people, and its culture. Students will receive StarTalk scholarships that cover the cost of their instruction and books, and provide them with housing and meals on the Ole Miss campus. All students who complete the program will receive college credit in Mandarin Chinese. Current high school sophomores and juniors with outstanding academic records may apply to the StarTalk Program. Up to thirty students will be selected to participate in the program upon consideration of their academic record, letters of recommendation, and personal essay. Students who have never studied Chinese are encouraged to apply. Students who have also studied Chinese for one or two years may apply as well, and a higher-level course may be offered depending on the background of the applicants.

The teacher program of StarTalk Vermont intents to provide opportunities for 10 Chinese language teachers from across the nation to upgrade their knowledge and skills in instruction by developing a comprehensive understanding of the StarTalk Principles and the Standards for Foreign Language Learning in the 21st Century. The participants will have 104 hours of instructional time, including daily coaching by a Lead Instructor, presentations and lectures given by experts, lesson design with consultation of the experts, and reflections on the activities they are engaged in as compared with their teaching practices in schools. The participants will apply what they learn to practice by teaching in the student program so that each teacher will have several opportunities for instruction. The program will last for 13 days, and a pre-program assignment on StarTalk Principles, the 5 C's, and the Coaching approcah is required. Follow-up contacts will be maintained through E-mail, Skype sessions, and telephone calls after the program. Certain technology approaches will be applied to the teacher program for instruction and for management of the program.

In spite of the large number of Heritage Language Learners (HLL) in K-16 classrooms, language instructors in the U.S. are not prepared to teach them and few methodologies, curricula, or materials for teaching HLLs are available. This challenge is compounded in all STARTALK languages because they are less commonly taught and the teachers are often required to create their own materials. This teacher workshop is designed to help language teachers learn how to develop suitable materials for their students by focusing on instructional materials that answer the needs of HLLs. The workshop will be designed to impart the principles and methods of HL materials development. The workshop also aims to create a cohort of language teachers who will be leaders and mentors in the field of HL instruction. We hope that teachers who participate in the workshop will commit to re-teaching “lessons learned” at their institution or in their region when they return home. Online Certificate for Heritage Language Instruction

Since 2009, the National Heritage Language Resource Center (NHLRC) has held annual week-long summer workshops at UCLA that have aimed to train teachers of STARTALK languages in heritage language (HL) pedagogy, in particular, methodologies, materials and curricula. In order to promote greater access to the material covered in our summer workshops, we will develop the first phase (3 modules) of an online Certificate in HL Instruction. When completed, the online certificate will consist of six modules that are based on the curriculum of our past face-to-face summer workshops, our reflections on this content, participants’ evaluations, and comments from STARTALK observers. Portions of the online certificate will be piloted this summer with participants from past Heritage Language Teacher Workshops.

University of New Hampshire (student) UNH Startalk Summer Chinese Program Chinese • June 20, 2016– July 3, 2016 The UNH 2015 STARTALK Chinese Language Summer Camp is a non-residential program co-sponsored by UNH LLC. Experienced language teachers will lead the camp's cultural and linguistic activities. Thirty-six students, in grades 5 through 11 will be divided into novice and intermediate accordingly to develop basic Mandarin Chinese language skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing) with a focus on simple and healthful Chinese cooking. In addition to intensive language/cooking lessons, students will participate in daily cultural activities that will reinforce language learning and a greater appreciation of Chinese cooking. Other cultural activities may include Chinese calligraphy, paper cutting, kite making and flying, martial arts, Chinese music such as the pipa, and erhu, ping-pong, and a field trip to Boston's Chinatown to do grocery shopping. Students will need to cook their own lunch most of the time through guided instructions. There will be two more days of post program activities centered around the celebration of Chinese New Year In early Feb of 2016 (voluntary only). The 2015 Berkeley STARTALK Teacher Program offers 2-week online program (June 12-25) and 2-week onsite program (June 26-July 10; no weekend class). The online portion offers 1) reading, exercises, and discussions on National and State Standards, STARTALK Endorsed Principles for Effective Teaching and Learning, Chinese linguistics/pedagogical grammar, backward design, and using target language to teach; 2) Demo lesson critiques (using short lessons taped in mentor teachers classrooms and/or STARTALK Classroom Video Collections; 3) Unit and lesson planning in groups with support from mentor teachers; 4)a technology workshop introducing technology applications for the 2015 STARTALK Program and for Chinese language classrooms. The first week of onsite program will focus on reinforcing online learning with hands-on projects including, 1)unit and lesson planning in groups with support from instructor and mentor teachers; 2) microteaching using lessons designed in groups; and 3) an information session focusing on California Teaching Credential (licensure). The second week of the onsite program will include mentor teachers' teaching demos and teacher participants' microteaching in real classroom setting.The program will recruit volunteer middle and high school students to be taught by the teacher participants in a real classroom setting during the second week of the onsite program (July 6-July 10).
