Twelve teachers of Chinese of either beginning or emerging level will participate in this dynamic three-week, 90 hour Teacher Program. The focus of the program will be how to teach history, geography, legends and other cultural content in Chinese at every level.The first week will be online and asynchronous, the second and third weeks will be at North Dakota State University in Fargo, ND. Participants will interact with instructors and each other in peer editing during the second week. The third week, participants will spend in the student program, practicing their new techniques and receiving feedback. Participants will be able to articulate and practice various criteria from the STELLA Modules Planning, The Learning Experience, and Performance and Feedback, collecting their evidence in a portfolio. Housing will be provided in a modern and comfortable conference center.

This three-week Chinese immersion program will allow 48 participants grades, 3-5 and 6-8 to attain a novice proficiency level in Chinese. During the six hour days, students will engage in dynamic task-based language learning, practicing martial arts, calligraphy, music, Chinese cooking and ink painting. The theme "Journey to the West - The Monkey King" will provide ample opportunities for communication about animals, action verbs, travel and preferred activities; learning about the cultures of the Chinese folklore, traditions, music and martial arts; connecting to art and history. A field trip to Sen Lin Hu, Concordia Language Villages Chinese Program will provide a rich exchange of activities like archery, dragon boating, dance, calligraphy and interpersonal communication.

Participating students will be those rising first through sixth grade students enrolled in the district’s sequential, content-related and Kentucky World Language standards-based Chinese language programs during the regular school year. The primary learning goal is to sustain and enhance participating students’ current levels of proficiency, while providing them with opportunities to experience authentic Chinese cultural activities in an immersion environment. In this standards-driven Mandarin Chinese summer learning program, students will engage in relevant, age-appropriate communicative tasks that emerge from non-academic areas of interest and cultural importance as well as from academic content in other curricular areas. Students’ acquisition of Mandarin structures will develop naturally from the communicative tasks and assessments designed around the curricular theme, "Discover China Through its Regions." Students will demonstrate their progress toward developing skills in interpersonal, conversational communication; interpretive listening; and presentational speaking.

Learning to Teach Critical Languages from Best Practices

Running from June 1 to July 24, 2015, the FSU STARTALK program is designed to support two distinct sets of teachers of critical languages: approximately 20 teacher candidates in FSU’s School of Teacher Education; and eight early-career language teachers, who have experience teaching their languages at either college or elementary level. Teacher candidates will work with mentor teachers to co-plan, micro-teach, and co-teach in the program. For the teacher candidates, the proposed program will bridge the theory from the candidates' coursework and their practice through micro-teaching and co-teaching; for the eight mentor teachers, the proposed program will deepen their understanding of effective world language teaching practices and nurture their abilities as teacher-leaders. By the end of this program, teacher candidates will be able to use the backward design process to plan lessons that are contextualized and provide comprehensible input to students; meanwhile, the candidates will be able to use their reflections on the similarities and differences between the U.S. and their home countries’ school cultures to build appropriate relationships with students to promote a safe and positive learning environment; mentors will develop their skills of providing constructive feedback to teacher candidates.

The 2015 STARTALK Fresno Chinese Language and Culture Academy is a fourteen-day, 90-hour Chinese language and culture program offered at Hoover High School in the Fresno Unified School District (FUSD) during this summer. It is for students currently between 5th and 12th grade at school. The program will run from June 15 to July 2 from 8 am to 2:30 pm, Monday through Friday. The standard-based, student-centered program is specially designed for 60 students to learn Mandarin Chinese language and culture. The program will offer novice and intermediate level Chinese language classes. Students will receive 5 units of elective class credit. Students will learn and develop speaking, reading, listening and writing skills while gaining exposure to the products, practices, and perspectives of the Chinese culture. The STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) curriculum will be integrated in activities to learn the language. Students will use technology to become familiar with the target language and culture. The target language will be reinforced through painting, calligraphy, abacus, martial arts, craft, dance, music, Chinese chess, cooking, song, sport, and a field trip to San Francisco Chinatown. Students will be immersed in the Chinese language environment to develop an in-depth understanding of the culture.

STARTALK: Furman Chinese Language Camp

The 2015 STARTALK Furman Chinese Language Camp is a two-week residential program from July 05-19. It is an intensive language program designed for 28 high school students who have taken at least one year of Chinese, or the equivalent. The program theme is: “You and I: Two Worlds Meet.” The ultimate goal of each day’s learning is to prepare the students for the evening one-on-one video chat with their language partners in China. Immersed in the topics of evening conversations, students live on the beautiful Furman campus with native Chinese language teachers and undergraduate Chinese-speaking camp counselors, build their language skills in intensive morning classes, try their hand at Chinese cooking, Taichi, dance, and games, attend lectures on contemporary Chinese culture and politics, and enjoy language-focused field trips. The program provides 7 hours a day of organized instruction and language-focused activities and weekend tours. Weekend activities feature a group hike with Furman's undergraduate students from China, meetings with the Greenville Chinese Cultural Association, a field trip to a Chinese grocery store followed by a dumpling-making party, a Chinese feature film, and a final farewell performance.

Advanced Course: June 29 – July 10: Prerequisite: 3 years teaching experience. Participants will develop an understanding of what it takes to become a leader, how to develop a vision of what good classroom performance is, how to communicate that vision to other teachers, and finally how to assist other teachers in implementing that vision in their classes. Participants will also focus on diagnosing difficulties, and promoting ways to manage the learning process. Participants learn to provide feedback and coaching to other teachers so that instruction is maximized. Technology will be an integral part of the course and will be used to gather data. Beginner Course: July 13 – 24: This course centers on a Chinese curriculum that is standards-based, infuses technology, and includes the latest philosophies of language teaching. Participants will discuss how curriculum needs to be created with a “backward design” model, keeping in mind that focused assessment is a key component of Understanding by Design. Participants will also learn techniques for helping their students become more proficient as they continue their language study. Teachers will learn elements of differentiated instruction and demonstrate their understanding by teaching a mini-lesson. Observation and reflection are integral parts of the course.

The GLP Summer Startalk Program: Highly Effective Teacher By Design, is a two week program designed to bring together learners to both improve their own instruction as well as support colleagues in their professional growth. We will begin our time together by establishing a common understanding of the characteristics of highly effective world language instruction as well as the components of the world readiness standards. We will continue by exploring the role of learning targets and formative assessment as a means to monitor student language development, ensuring participants meet their end of course goals. Next we will focus on lesson planning, comprehensible input, and checking for understanding, which are essential elements of a successful second language classroom. In week two we will focus on practicing the implementation of what was learned in week one. This week will provide opportunities for participants to teach lessons to groups of students and receive feedback on those lessons. Based on the feedback, participants will revise the lesson and re-teach it to a new group later in the week. This focus on the reflection and refinement process will provide participants the opportunity to develop skills they can implement in their classrooms in the fall.

The Gonzaga University Startalk Chinese Program consists of three sessions organized according to student grade level: elementary school (2-5), middle school (6-8) and high school (9-12). The program is intended for complete beginners or students at the novice level (small amount of prior study of Chinese). The elementary school session runs three weeks from June 23-July 10, meeting Monday-Friday from 9:00-12:00. Hunter College Teacher Training Program offers graduate-level courses for pre-service and in-service teachers to fulfill partial requirements toward the M.A. degree and the New York State certification. There are 25 seats available. The program begins with a three-day preparation session followed by five weeks of teaching practicum that combines face-to-face teaching in the classroom setting and on-line tutoring via our live classroom platform. There will also be a workshop on task-based instruction and a seminar on proficiency-based teaching. Training will be conducted through a variety of activities, such as classroom observation and discussion, teaching rehearsal, student-teaching, teaching discussion, etc. Participants draft lesson plans, discuss them with the lead teacher and fellow participants, rehearse the lessons, teach them in a real classroom, and discuss the teaching afterwards. Participants may choose to participate with no credit, or may choose to earn up to 6 graduate credits over the summer, and an additional 3 credits in the fall semester. For-credit participants are eligible to receive tuition scholarship support if they complete course requirements with outstanding performance.

Hunter College offers a unique intensive language and culture class for 30 students. No prior knowledge of Chinese is required. Located in New York City, our students are immersed in rich cultural and linguistic resources. Our program offers dynamic language training that includes in-class language immersion, individualized instruction, one-on-one conversation practice with native speakers of Chinese, field trips, learning in virtual environments, and language exchanges in various media. Instruction will be tailored to the student's proficiency level. The 2015 Program will be divided into two sessions: face-to-face instruction Monday to Thursday and online instruction on Friday from June 27th to July 21st, followed by one-on-one online instruction Monday to Friday from July 22nd to July 29th. On July 30th, students return to Hunter for end-of-program assessment. Students with outstanding performance in the summer session may earn the opportunity to enroll at Hunter and participate in the post-summer online course. Rising 11th and 12th graders who complete the post-summer course with satisfactory performance have the option to earn 3 college credits. Some tuition assistance will be available.

.HEB ISD’s May I Take Your Order? will provide 3 weeks and 91 hours of student-centered learning and instruction in Hindi, Arabic, or Chinese to rising 6th and 7th graders, and intermediate level practice for 8th-11th grade students. At the end of this academy, we expect students to achieve novice level oral proficiency in their language of choice. The learning outcomes are based on the goals outlined in the World Readiness Standards for Learning Languages, the state LOTE and IB standards. To meet the novice and intermediate level proficiency, our students will engage in the target language to socialize and provide information. Cultural goals will be achieved when students demonstrate an understanding of some of the cultural practices and perspectives of India, China, or the ME. For example, students will explain the creation of authentic cuisine in simple Hindi, Mandarin, or Arabic and how these practices and perspectives may have changed over time. Resources, including technology, will enable students to use the language to make connections with other cultures and subject areas. Activities will enable students to use the language both within and beyond our school setting.

Lewis University offers its four-week summer Startalk program to 30 rising high school and college students interested in learning Russian or Chinese. The program will immerse its participants into a culturally rich target language environment and will offer its students a variety of engaging activities under the umbrella theme "A trip to St. Petersburg/Taipei." Students will learn how to get around the major Taiwanese/Russian city, learn about places of interest, engage in basic conversation with "locals", conduct simple transactions etc. This non-residential program will run from Monday, June 15th till Friday, July 10th, Monday through Friday. Student will stay on the campus daily from 9 am to 2:30 pm (except on Fridays when school ends at 12 noon). Classroom instruction will be conducted from 9 am to 1:30 pm with 30 minutes lunch break at the University Dining Room. From 1:30 to 2:30 pm on all week days, except Friday, students will be involved in a variety of culturally-oriented activities that will require the use of the target language. Students who successfully complete the program will earn three tuition-free transferable college credits.

The School of Education at Loyola Marymount University (LMU) is committed to responding to the state and national demand for highly qualified Mandarin language teachers by offering two pathways for teacher preparation. Pathway 1 is the Credential Program and includes the completion of coursework leading to a California teaching credential, Master's degree and bilingual authorization (2 cohorts of teacher candidates, 17 total). Pathway 2 is the Certificate in Teaching Mandarin in PreK-12 Settings, a hybrid program consisting of 12 continuing education units of credit (120 professional development hours) offered through LMU Extension (14 participants). Since our first StarTalk grant in 2008, 26 of our recipients have graduated with Master’s Degrees. Many of our graduates have taken teaching positions in southern California and throughout the nation and are "highly qualified," according to the national definition set forth in No Child Left Behind (2001).

The LMU STARTALK 2015 Mandarin Student Summer Immersion Program addresses the optimal age group for developing native-like proficiency in Mandarin in the early elementary/elementary grades. Through our partnership with Los Angeles-area Mandarin elementary immersion programs, our goal is to offer standards-aligned literature, arts and movement target- language instruction in Mandarin to rising 1st – 4th grade students. Both language and content standards will be highlighted in student learning outcomes. The 2015 program focuses on "Discovery through a Virtual Journey along the Silk Road" and will take place over two weeks. The program is based on ACTFL standards-Standards for Foreign Language Learning and Preparing for the 21st Century, as well as aligned with Visual and Performing Arts Content Standards and the vision behind the California Common Core Standards towards interdisciplinary instruction with language arts, social studies and Math. Concurrently, we will address the pipeline of teacher preparation and professional development through a collaborative effort with the Chinese Teacher Preparation Program at LMU. Teachers-in-training will observe, teach and be mentored by experienced Mandarin language credentialed teachers who will teach all classes in the program. In teams, the curriculum templates and units will be developed during the month of May/early June.

The Mandarin Institute in collaboration with the San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD) STARTALK Middle and High School Chinese Intensive Program offers Bay Area students the opportunity to immerse themselves in a culturally rich and academically rigorous Chinese program. During the three week program, students will participate in six hours of engaging language study each day which includes classroom time, cultural units and a distance learning component. Each student will have a personal Chinese tutor situated in China with whom they will interact with daily over the course of the program to increase their skill and confidence in engaging in authentic dialogues. Located in the heart of Chinatown, students will engage with locals daily in addition to several field trips and lunch in Chinatown. Students can register for Middle School Immersion or High School level II or III. Upon successful completion of the 90 hour language study High School program, students may earn one semester foreign language credit. The theme of our program is "Discover San Francisco Chinatown!" Our goal is to increase students' confidence in using their language skills in real world situations with native speakers.

Paradise Valley Mandarin Camp

The Paradise Valley Mandarin Camp is designed to provide a rich linguistic and cultural experience for students in grades K-5. This summer program will include sessions for kindergarten through fifth grade students at Paradise Valley Elementary school. The morning and afternoon sessions will each have capacity for 20 incoming kindergarteners (40 total), 20 dual language immersion first graders (40 total), 22 dual language immersion second grade students (44 total) and 10 non-immersion third-fifth grade students (20 total), 72 students in the morning and 72 students in the afternoon, for at total capacity of 144 students. The K-1 classes will center around the story of Mulan and the second grade immersion and 3-5 non immersion classes will be based on The Monkey King. The students will be immersed in Mandarin by experienced dual-language immersion teachers who will introduce them to and develop the language and culture of China. At the end of the camp they will participate in a capstone project where they will demonstrate their acquired language skills in oral and visual presentations appropriate to their grade and proficiency in Chinese.
