STARTALK: WVDE Language Leaper Summer Camp

The West Virginia Department of Education in partnership with Monongalia County Schools present the WVDE Language Leaper Immersion Summer Camp Program for elementary students. Monongalia County School elementary students in grades K-5 will have the opportunity to engage in a two-week thematic and content-based summer camp experience in Morgantown, West Virginia. Students will develop initial Chinese language proficiency as they engage with program instructors and the newly developed media-enhanced West Virginia Elementary Language Leaper curriculum. Learners will travel aboard the Language Leaper spaceship and will explore Chinese language and culture within the experience of contextualized content-based learning. Students will document their initial accomplishments and language proficiency and will have the opportunity to continue their learning in the fall through formal Chinese classes in Monongalia County Public Schools.

The West Virginia Department of Education, in partnership with Monongalia County Schools, will offer the WVDE Language Leaper Immersion Summer Camp Program for 80 elementary students. Monongalia County elementary students who will enroll in grades 1-5 will have the opportunity to engage in a two-week thematic and content-based summer camp experience in Morgantown, WV. Students will develop initial Chinese proficiency as they interact with program instructors and the recently developed media-enhanced West Virginia Elementary Language Leaper curriculum. Learners will experience the Language Leaper program and explore Chinese language and culture within a contextualized and content-focused learning environment. Students will document their initial accomplishments and language proficiency through formative and self-assessment and will have the opportunity to continue their learning in the fall through formal Chinese classes in Monongalia County. Accomodations will be made to enrich the learning of heritage speakers. These students will have the opportunity to further their learning of the Chinese language through intermediate speaking opportunties, as well as reading and writing activities.

In partnership with the West Virginia Department of Education, Monongalia County Schools will offer the sixth annual STARTALK: WVDE Chinese Immersion Summer Camp from June 15-19 and June 22-26. County students who will be entering grades 1-5 will have the opportunity to engage in a two-week thematic and content-based summer day camp experience at North Elementary School. Students will develop or expand their knowledge of the Chinese language and culture through language lessons, cultural experiences and interaction with native speakers of Mandarin Chinese. Students will participate in follow-up sessions throughout the academic year.
