Focused on teacher empowerment, participants will not only refine their own practices but also learn to develop professional development materials that can be shared and disseminated in their school, district, or region. There are two options for participation to meet the varied needs of teacher leaders. Option 1: designed for teachers to improve their practice through participation in a series of mini-workshops on high-yield teaching strategies. Possible replication materials and strategies will be shared as well. Option 2: designed for experienced teacher leaders with previous STARTALK experiences or STARTALK instructional leads. This experience will allow participants to work with national leaders such as Greg Duncan and Helena Curtain to develop and capture demo lessons or video exemplars of high-yield teaching strategies that would support their professional development presentations as well as practice sessions as part of the program. Serving as a teacher leader-training program, participants from other STARTALK programs will be able to immediately implement their learning in their own program. *Partial-travel assistance may be available for accepted participants.

The Memphis City Schools (MCS) Startalk program is designed to enhance the qualifications and effectiveness of current and potential teachers of MCS teachers of Arabic, Chinese, and Russian by offering a hybrid training program that includes a standards-based online component followed by a two-week institute. Subsequent to the online component and the first week of the face to face institute, teachers will have a one-week practicum experience in which they teach MCS students of the target languages for two hours daily. Elementary, middle, and high school students recruited from MCS schools will be enrolled in these languages in the 2010-2011 school year. Participants will earn 4 credits from the University of Memphis for a foreign language methods course and for a practicum experience. The institute will enable teachers to improve their ability to teach towards attainment of the national standards, make progress toward earning initial or renewed certification while also improving their language and cultural proficiencies. Follow-up sessions throughout the 2010-2011 academic year will extend teacher growth beyond the summer institute experience.

Designed for any teacher as well as instructional leads in STARTALK programs, this online course will help participants use resources identified by the Teacher Effectiveness for Language Learning Project to increase their effectiveness. Participants will be able to complete up to 100 hours of professional learning through four online modules. Module 1 will provide an in-depth look at choosing learning targets not only focused on language and cultural competencies, but also how to develop “LEARNING TARGETS” that allow learners to connect and compare to other content areas, and demonstrate their learning in their community. Module 2 will provide the opportunity to see how carefully identified learning targets ease a teachers implementation of strategies for “USING THE TARGET LANGUAGE” and providing comprehensible input. Module 3 will ask participants to develop an understanding of the role of assessment in meeting the National Standards through the development of their own “PERFORMANCE ASSESSMENTS.” Module 4 will ask participants to reflect on their own effectiveness and develop a growth plan based on the “TELL PROJECT”. Each module includes videos, readings, threaded discussions, coaching sessions, and online chats with expert consultants. Within each module, participants will have a choice of assessment tasks to demonstrate their learning.
