Startalk Ohio Hindi Summer Camp 2013

The Ohio Hindi Camp will employ the theme “A Trip to India: Exploring the Hindi Belt” to design and implement a theme-based curriculum. This theme will be elaborated in terms of the 5C’s of the National Standards. The program will be held at Jennings Community Learning Center in Akron, Ohio. Classes will be held daily over twelve days including Saturdays from July 8 to July 20, 2013, with further learning resources to be created and posted on the website or organized via social media on a weekly basis through the end of the year. The program will primarily target heritage children, ages 11 to 17, but will also welcome non-heritage students. Students will acquire information about and recognize distinctive Indian viewpoints through a daily focus on authentic materials thematically integrated with the curriculum. These will include level appropriate popular films/songs, aphorisms and folk tales. Students will use Hindi outside of the classroom on program field trips. Students will demonstrate this knowledge by utilizing it in a manner that is integrated with the communication and cultural tasks that they perform. We are extremely excited about the prospect of promoting Hindi study in Ohio.

Startalk Ohio Hindi Summer Camp 2015

The STARTALK Ohio Hindi Summer Camp will provide Hindi language and Indian culture instruction to 50 students entering grades 3 through 8. All major costs associated with the program are funded by a STARTALK grant. The program will provide 15 days of instructions for a total of 90 hours. Instructions will be based on the theme “Bharat Jao, Bharat Jano” (Go to India, Know India). The program goal is for students to learn to carry out a variety of real-world tasks at a performance level of a sub-level above their incoming level.This will be achieved by interactive instructions through playing games, dancing, yoga, music, sports, and arts & crafts activities, etc. It will include a day of field trip to a cultural center, restaurant or shopping center to give the students a real life experience. The program will target heritage and non heritage students.The program will be from July 7 to July 25, 9.00 a.m. to 3.00 p.m. The program will continue to provide continued learning resources and support to the participants through online as well as face to face activities.

The 2009 Regents STARTALK Foreign Language Academy is a 4-week immersion program offering elementary instruction in Arabic, Chinese, Hindi, Japanese, and Russian to rising juniors and seniors in Ohio high schools who are new learners of these languages. The academy will serve 58 students, and preference will be given to students from high schools that do not teach the languages offered in the Academy. The theme of the 2009 program is “My Space—Our World,” and instruction is organized around problem-solving projects. A mandatory academic year follow-up program consists of monthly mini-immersion sessions supported by distance learning.

The Regents STARTALK Foreign Language Academy is a four-week residential immersion program for beginning students of Arabic, Chinese and Hindi. The program runs from June 13-July 10, 2010 and is housed in the Honors College of Kent State University, in Kent, Ohio. Students receive college credit for the program and are loaned a laptop computer with all relevant foreign language software for the duration of the program. Participants in the program are exposed to these critical languages in a safe, culture-rich environment. Alumni of the program have gone on to study these languages at some of the most prestigious and demanding language programs in the country.

STARTALK Teacher Leadership Academy: Integrating Technology with Best Practices

The STARTALK Teacher Leadership Academy is a residential workshop for K-12 teachers of critical languages (Arabic, Chinese, Hindi, and Russian) that will talk place on the campus of Kent State University, Kent, Ohio, from June 13-19, 2010. Special emphasis will be placed on the use of Web 2.0 technologies in the foreign language classroom. Participating teachers will have the opportunity to observe expert teachers and to develop their own technology-infused lessons. Previous experience with technology is not required. Laptop computers with the appropriate softward will be provided for the duration of the program. Participating teachers will receive three graduate school credits upon successful completion of the program.
