In this innovative, intensive Chinese program, high school students spend eight days attending Chinese class by videoconferencing in their home districts, then participate in two full days and one evening of culminating activities in Overland Park (for Kansas, Missouri, and Arkansas students) or in Sioux Falls, South Dakota (Sioux Falls students). The high school student-focused curriculum allows beginning students of Chinese to learn to express identity in terms of individual preferences in music, sports, movies, style, personality. The culminating activities are highlighted by a student film festival, opening with a red carpet event and followed by a "STARTALK Academy" awards banquet. Student teams produce Chinese films with FLIP cameras and compete for best picture, best comedy, best drama, and other prizes. Students also try out sidewalk calligraphy, traditional calligraphy, and traditional Chinese musical instruments, and interact with native speaker peers.

STARTALK 2012: C2-Chinese Connect will expand access to Chinese language and strengthen high school programs in Kansas, Arkansas, Missouri, and South Dakota. The two week program, with at least 50 contact hours, will offer a total of 60 high school students the opportunity to develop novice language skills in Chinese and explore cultural comparisons, connections, and links to community through a teenage-focused, standards-based curriculum. Students attend class for the first eight days at their home school location, with instruction delivered by videoconferencing, combined with carefully selected online activities, followed by two full days and evenings of face-to-face, residential “camp” experience at the University of Kansas. During the two-day residential experience, students will interact with peers from other schools and with native speakers. The highlight of the program is a festival of student-produced short films, preceded by a "red-carpet" event led by the students and followed by an awards ceremony. Students from participating schools may apply through their home schools.

Learn Chinese! Earn a STARTALK Film Academy Award! STARTALK 2014: C2-Chinese Connect offers an exciting, two-week program in learning Chinese and filmmaking for secondary school students. This blended learning program combines videoconferencing, online instruction, and a two-day residential camp to provide students with an accessible and fun learning experience. For the first eight days, students in six schools in Kansas, Missouri, Arkansas, and South Dakota will participate each morning at their home schools, where they will interact by videoconferencing with native speaker, licensed instructors teaching from the University of Kansas, and work with self-paced online materials. The students will then travel to the University of Kansas where they will stay in student dormitories and participate in two days of activities, culminating in a festival of student films, with an awards ceremony, all led by students in Chinese. The students use the curriculum content, which explores teenage identity through preferences in music, movies, hobbies, and sports, to develop creative story lines and film their stories using FLIP cameras. The final residential camp also includes workshops in Chinese calligraphy and music and more interactions with native speakers. For secondary school students with zero or beginning Chinese.
