Discover India through STARTALK Hindi Camp 2012 at Berkmer High School is a summer program for 100 middle and high school students, June 1st -10th, concluding with a graduation ceremony. Culture is an integral component of the STARTALK program and language learning is based on cultural content. Students will be able to participate in a variety of cultural activities. The program will follow a thematic curriculum based on 5 C’s. This theme will have carefully designed curriculum with enriched content and with more student centered real life performance based activities for differentiated learning purpose. In sub-theme we will have a lesson(s) with a meaningful activities related to Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). These innovative activities will be carefully planned to make students aware of India’s contribution to modern world and would interest returning students with new matter. The camp will begin daily at 9am with Yoga and end at 6pm with Hindi Film dance. It will be a total immersion program where the target language and culture will prevail. Ours is an action oriented program through arts & crafts, sports, reading and listening with TPR activities and story-telling. The real-life interactive communication will be taken to a higher level.

Discover India through STARTALK 2013 Balvihar Hindi Camp at Berkmer High School is a summer program for 100 middle and high school students, July 15th-25th, concluding with a graduation ceremony. These innovative activities will be carefully planned to make students aware of India’s contribution to modern world and would interest returning students with new matter. STARTALK Balvihar Hindi Language and Culture Summer Camp 2015 is a summer program for 75 middle and high school students, July 8th-23rd, concluding with a graduation ceremony. The program will follow a thematic curriculum based on 5 C’s. We are recycling our overarching theme the colorful world of India (Bharat: Its Art and Industry). This will allow the concepts of Environment and STEM to be recycled (useful for returning students) This theme will have carefully designed curriculum with chosen sub-themes to address students’ interests particularly in health and hygiene (Traditional and Modern practices), fashion ( eco-friendly approach) and music ( Influence of Mathematics),and some of the existing and emerging industries in these fields. An action-oriented program like ours through comprehensive but comprehensible input through arts & crafts, sports, reading and listening with TPR activities and story-telling makes it very appealing to students. The camp will begin daily at 9:00 am with Yoga and end at 5:00pm. It will be a total immersion program where the target language and culture will prevail. The real-life interactive communication will be taken to a higher level. By the end of the program students will know and use basic Hindi structures and the Devanagari script.

Atlanta STARTALK Hindi Language and Culture Summer Camp at Barkmer High Scool is a summer program for 100 Middle and high school students. Classes will begin on July 8th, 2011and end on July 17th with a graduation ceremony. Culture is an integral component of the STARTALK program and language learning is based on cultural content. Students will be able to participate in a variety of cultural activities. The program will follow a thematic curriculum based on 5 C’s. The over-arching theme will be “Crossing Culture" with four sub-themes of food, fashions, sports and dance & music, with each unit for two days. Ours is an action oriented program through comprehensive but comprehensible input through arts & crafts, sports, reading and listening with TPR activities and story-telling. The real-life interaction communication will be taken to a higher level. The daily schedule will start at 9 am with Yoga and end at 6 with Bollywood dance. Hindi will be in the air everywhere in the environment. It will be a total immersion program where the target language and culture will prevail. There will be an acquisition rich environment with colorful Hindi realia all around.

It will focus on task-based learning and seeks to prepare participants with basic pedagogical knowledge and skills that they can use to implement standards-based instruction in their own classrooms. Participants will have opportunities for supervised teaching practice in the Startalk Intensive Summer Program for Chinese Students. STARTALK: Intensive Summer Program for Chinese Teachers in P-12

This intensive summer teacher-training program will prepare twenty participants with the basic knowledge and skills to implement a P-12 Chinese curriculum grounded in national and state standards. Instructional formats have been designed to appeal to different learners: Lectures, hands-on-activities, discussions, group work, peer review, reflections, teaching opportunities followed by feedback, and participation online. The program offers a 3-credit graduate course, CHNS 7704: Chinese Pedagogical Linguistics, which can be applied towards the Alternative Teacher Preparation Program or the Master of Arts in teaching Chinese, both of which lead to P-12 Georgia teacher certification in Chinese and are offered at Kennesaw State University. Eligibility: Current teachers of Chinese from P-12 public and private schools as well as community language schools in Georgia will be given priority for admission. Out-of-state teachers who pay for their own transportation to Kennesaw, GA, and Chinese speakers who are considering a career in teaching are also welcome to apply. An undergraduate degree (in any field) is required. Cost: A StarTalk grant covers all costs for participants who complete the entire program successfully, including tuition & fees, room & board, and instructional materials. STARTALK: Intensive Summer Program for Chinese Language Students

This is a two-week residential program for high school students, ages 14 -17, who will be immersed in Chinese language and culture in a fun and stress-free environment. The curriculum will focus on functional language development in real-life contexts that students will be able to use in interaction with Chinese native speakers. Participation is limited to 24 students, who will be divided into two groups based on their proficiency level in Chinese: Beginning or Intermediate. Other resources such as Chinese music, film, song, folk dance, Chinese fashion show, calligraphy, martial arts, a field trip, and varied classroom projects will complement study of the language. As a result of their participation, students will develop language skills, gain cultural understanding and awareness of linguistic differences, and learn about the Chinese community in Georgia. Cost: A Startalk grant covers lodging, meals, classroom materials, instruction, transportation to and from events, and field trips. An application fee of $100 is required and will be refunded to participants who complete the program successfully. Application deadline: May 1, 2012.

KSU STARTALK Chinese Academy for High School Students

This is a two-week residential language and culture immersion program for High School students and rising 9th graders, ages 14 -17. The curriculum will focus on functional language development in real-life contexts that students will be able to use in interaction with Chinese native speakers. Participants from the concurrent STARTALK teacher program and native Chinese student assistants will help facilitate an immersion environment outside of class. Cultural resources and activities such as music, film, song, folk dance, calligraphy, crafts, games, cooking, table tennis, and martial arts will complement the study of language. All proficiency levels are welcome. Participants will be assigned to groups based on their proficiency level in Chinese. Every participant will receive a full scholarship that covers all program-related expenses: Instruction, cultural events, lodging, meals, classroom materials, transportation to and from events, and field trips. KSU STARTALK Chinese Academy for Language Teachers

This teacher-training program is designed for current Chinese teachers from P-12 public and private schools as well as community language schools. The curriculum will focus on performance-based assessment and technology within a standards-based instructional framework. In addition to learning how to facilitate a learner-centered classroom, participants will create their own website and online language learning activities. Observations and teaching practice will be completed in the concurrent STARTALK student program and selected participants will have the opportunity to teach in future student programs. Six professional learning credits will be awarded for successful program completion. Participants will receive a full scholarship that covers tuition, classroom materials, and meals. Lodging will also be provided at no cost for up to eight teachers. Application deadline: May 1, 2013.

Startalk Yuva Summer Hindi Camp 2010

This is a deep immersion Hindi language and culture camp for providing opportunities to 100 young learners of 6th, 7th and 8th graders to become bilingual and bicultural. No prior knowledge of Hindi is required. Students at all levels of proficiency in Hindi (excepting native level) are welcome to apply. Students admitted in the program will be grouped on the basis of their current proficiency level in Hindi. The program will aim at generating students’ interest in Hindi language and the cultures of South Asia through a Standard-based curriculum. Language learning will be through various cultural activities - theater, dance, music, games and yoga, etc. The use of emerging technologies will be an important aspect of the program. Real life opportunities for language use will be provided through field trips and role-plays. Classes will be small for individualized feedback. Students will receive Hindi learning materials (conventional and digital) for continuing with Hindi after the program. The program will be from 9 to 6 everyday with lunch break and two snack breaks. There is a fee of $300 per student out of which $200 check will be returned on the last day of the program upon successful completion of the program.
