This is a two-week Chinese residential language program which offers development workshops for pre-service and in-service K-16 non-native Chinese language teachers. The program takes place on Hamilton College's campus during the summer. The program's overarching goal is to provide professional development opportunities in language and pedagogy. By the end of the program, participants will improve their Chinese language proficiency, design and deliver standards-based thematic units. They will develop skills needed to properly align curriculum, instruction and assessment; and integrate culture, content, and technology into their teaching practices. Additionally, participants will gain the skills needed to carry out instruction in the target language; use task-based teaching templates to create meaningful lessons and activities for students; and assess students' performance ability in an integrative way. The STARTALK Arabic Institute for the Next Generation will train and support a cohort of 30 undergraduate college students with an advanced background in Arabic language to become proficient in pedagogy, applied linguistics, and cultural studies for certification as classroom teachers. Participants earn undergraduate credit on successful completion of the course requirements. This is an intensive, three week residential workshop at Harvard University, consisting of 13 instructional days and 104 instructional hours, and including a teaching practicum at secondary schools in the Greater Boston area that offer Arabic.

HindiUSA’s main goal is to popularize Hindi, especially in young students, because it will help them to compete economically in the world market. The overall goal of this course is to make students confident and comfortable in speaking and understanding simple Hindi, and Indian culture, through classroom instructions and field trips. This course will include the five national goals of Foreign Language Content Standards by teaching students about simple greetings, directions, festivals, dresses, foods, interesting facts and reasons about Indian culture and comparison with American culture, language, and various subject topics, and helping students bond with their community. STARTALK summer Hindi program - 2011

HindiUSA has brought mostly the non-heritage students, aged between 12-14, in this two-week STARTALK Hindi program at the Franklin Middle school. The program theme is to celebrate Diwali with an Indian family. Our main emphasis will be to let students experience various facets of celebrating Diwali, and learn Indian culture through craft, multi-media, specially designed lesson plans, cultural activities such as Diwali Mela and field trips. In cultural part, students will learn about dances of India and Indian games. The program will attempt to satisfy curiosity of students about India and Indian culture. Students will gain hands-on experience in class rooms, and will be encouraged to talk to each other using nouns, pronouns, verbs, and commonly used expressions. Students will learn about Indian values, customs, and practices through demonstrative and repetitive exercises. The goal of this program is to make students confident in interacting with Indians, and enjoy Indian programs, settings, foods, clothes, and jewelry. We will attempt to instill enthusiasm in children of learning Hindi in future, and also spread information about this STARTALK program to others. This program will also help students to visit India, if they choose to do so.

Howard Community College offers intensive Arabic, Chinese Hindi and Perisan during a six week program that begins on June 23 and ends July 31. Classes meet Mondays through Thursdays from 8:30 a.m. -!2:30 p.m. Instruction is based on the theme of the Silk Road. Students will learn their new language through culture and be exposed to many of the cultural products and practices of the country or countrieswhere the language is spoken. Small class size gives students the opportunity to master the four critical language skills: listening, speaking, writing and reading. A voluntary tutuoring session after classes end, offer students added focus on mastering the language. Students will experience a cooking day, sports day, song and dance by participating in these activities and using the language they are learning.
