Focused on teacher empowerment, participants will not only refine their own practices but also learn to develop professional development materials that can be shared and disseminated in their school, district, or region. There are two options for participation to meet the varied needs of teacher leaders. Option 1: designed for teachers to improve their practice through participation in a series of mini-workshops on high-yield teaching strategies. Possible replication materials and strategies will be shared as well. Option 2: designed for experienced teacher leaders with previous STARTALK experiences or STARTALK instructional leads. This experience will allow participants to work with national leaders such as Greg Duncan and Helena Curtain to develop and capture demo lessons or video exemplars of high-yield teaching strategies that would support their professional development presentations as well as practice sessions as part of the program. Serving as a teacher leader-training program, participants from other STARTALK programs will be able to immediately implement their learning in their own program. *Partial-travel assistance may be available for accepted participants.

The ABC Houston STARTALK Student Program, administered by American Bodhi Center, provides three and half week summer courses and 90 hours of instruction for elementary, middle and high school students in June 2015. The Program aims to raise the awareness of and stimulate students’ interest in learning Chinese language and culture. The Program will collaborate with two schools in Houston Independent School District to recruit 2nd - 9th graders. Collaboration with Houston school districts has been a successful and effective model for STARTALK student programs from 2008-2014 (administered by Consortium of Texas Chinese Language Institute from 2008 - 2011 and Rice University in 2012 and 2013). American Bodhi Center will continue to utilize the strong and extensive connection with school districts and the community in Houston to promote the STARTALK student program.

American Chinese Academy (ACA) proposes “STARTALK Chinese Summer Camp: Earth Is Our Home”. It will be a three week (June 29, 2015 to July 17, 2015; classes: Monday - Thursday; field trip: Friday day, July 17) intensive Chinese language and culture summer learning program integrated with rich STEM contents targeted for kindergarten through 5th graders at University Park Elementary School in Prince George’s County, Maryland. This student-centered program will provide an immersive language learning environment where students engage in materials and hands-on activities featuring the theme “Earth Is Our Home.” During the program, students will receive technology-enhanced language instruction organized on different topics about the Earth. Students will also participate in craft, martial arts, and traditional musical instrument workshops, as well as a field trip to gain an increased interest and understanding of Chinese culture and language.

ACTFL/CLASS Discover Chinese Teacher Professional Development Program

There are two two-week sessions available for current or future teachers of Chinese. Experienced teachers of Chinese are encouraged to apply for the first session: July 6-16 and new teachers for the second session: July 19-30. Teachers who reside outside the Glastonbury, CT area will be provided with housing. All participants will receive at $400 travel stipend. Graduate credits are available and generally count as a foreign language methods course. Participants develop demonstration lessons in the target language and are engaged in learning how to deliver a standards-based instructional program. During the weekend, participants are engaged in an ACTFL professional deveopment workshop, either the Modified Oral Proficiency Interview (MOPI) or the Integrated Performance Assessment (IPA).

There are two two-week sessions available for current or future teachers of Chinese. The first session, July 2-13 (no class July 4) focuses on 21st Century Skills and Chinese K-12 Standards. This course is designed to provide information on aspects of creating a Chinese curriculum that is standards-based and incorporates skills necessary for the 21st century. Participants will be expected to be familiar with Grant and McThige’s “backward design” model. Part of the course will be devoted to focusing on assessments as they relate to 21st century skills. The second session, July 16-27, focuses on Standards-Based Instruction in Chinese Language: From Theory to Practice. This course is designed to provide the theory associated with effective classroom instruction to develop students' communicative competency in Chinese. There will be an emphasis on the role of the teacher as an instructional planner in a student-centered classroom that effectively matches curriculum, instruction, and assessment to identified learner outcomes. Teachers who reside outside the Glastonbury, CT, area will be provided with housing. All participants will receive at $400 travel allowance. ACTFL Discover Chinese Professional Development Program: Interdisciplinary Teaching in the Chinese Classroom (Advanced Course) & Standards-Based Instruction in Chinese Language: From Theory to Practice (Intro Course)

Advanced Course (7/1-7/12) This course will center on a Chinese curriculum that is rich in Chinese culture and infuses interdisciplinary learning. Teachers will further their knowledge by delving deeply into the fields of science, history, music, art, and literature. They will be expected to develop interdisciplinary lessons for the classroom and to share their materials with other teachers. Participants must be very familiar with the National Standards (the 5 C’s) so that they understand their importance in learning and are able to incorporate them seamlessly into their lessons. Teachers will demonstrate their understanding of course goals by creating and teaching a micro-lesson. Introductory Course (7/15-7/26) This course will center on a Chinese curriculum that is standards-based, infuses technology and includes the latest philosophies of language teaching. Participants will discuss how curriculum needs to be created with a “backward design” model, keeping in mind that focused assessment is a key component of Understanding by Design. Participants will also learn techniques for helping their students become more proficient as they continue their language study. Teachers will learn basic elements of differentiated instruction and demonstrate their understanding by teaching a mini-lesson. Micro-teaching and observation will be integral parts of the course.

STARTALK Summer 2012 Chinese Language and Culture Camp

STARTALK will give up to 60 K-5 Scenic Park students the opportunity to experience and learn Chinese in a fun, stimulating, and exciting environment. Students will be engaged in the target language, learning Chinese culture and language through singing, math, brush painting, innovative technology applications, role-playing, Chinese-style ping pong, Chinese playground games, and performance. The program is a two-week, ten-day Chinese language and culture experience. Instructional time is 6.5 hours each day, or 65 hours total. The camp will be located on site at Scenic Park. It will begin on June 4th, 2012 and end on June 15th, 2012. May 31 and June 1 will be two full-day professional development days for language acquisition techniques, Cooperative Learning, 21st century educational technology and online applications, and behavior management that reinforces target language.

Our 2013 STARTALK Chinese summer camp will give up to 60 students the opportunity to experience and learn Chinese in a fun and stimulating environment. Activities will be based on the 5 C’s of the National Standards for Foreign Language Learning in the 21st Century and will incorporate authentic, integrated performance assessments. Students will experience Chinese culture and language through the theme: “The Wandering Panda.” Activities invoke the five C’s, emphasizing Communication and Culture. Activities are thematically organized around a story that unfolds and is told and acted by the students themselves throughout the ten days of camp. The Wandering Panda travels and explores the wonders of three main regions of China. Panda is in search of an abundant food source—bamboo—for his or her family and friends. At the beginning of the camp each child creates, draws, describes and names his/her own Panda, creates a passport, and begins the quest. Students will learn Chinese language and culture through best practices and meaningful, enjoyable activities that maximize time and engagement with the language. They will demonstrate increasing use of Chinese, understanding of Chinese, engagement with the language, love of the language and culture, and a desire to continue.

Scenic Park Elementary StarTalk Chinese Language Culture Summer Camp program is a 2-week non-residential program, starting on June 6 and ending on June 19th. The program is designed to provide 60 Kindergarten through 5th students (ages 5-10) with enjoyable activities as they discover Chinese culture and language. The students will have the opportunity to experience and learn Chinese in a fun, stimulating and exciting environment. There will be 85 instructional hours. During this two-week long period, students will develop basic Mandarin Chinese language listening and speaking skills through singing, play performance, painting, games, and daily culture activities. They will be able to communicate using simple Chinese. They will also be motivated to continue to study Chinese in the future.

STARTALK Strategic Language Institute in Anne Arundel County Public Schools (AACPS) is targeted to rising 4th-6th grade students who are interested in an opportunity to experience either the Arabic or Chinese languages, cultures and civilizations. The program is open to *all* students who express an interest. The typical student in the program will not have had exposure to Arabic or Chinese in the past. This is a regional program and is open to students from Anne Arundel County, Baltimore City and County, Calvert County, Harford County, Howard County, Montgomery County, and Prince George’s County. Recruitment of students is done in number of ways: (1) program brochure sent to all schools and parents via PTA; (2) media releases through the school system Public Information Office; (3) discussion with school principals and teachers about the benefits of the program; (4) distribution through school newsletters and announcements; (5) presentations to targeted community organizations; and (6) one-on-one recruitment by school and Central Office staff; (7) e-mail and telephone calls. Particular focus is on student diversity, including those who are traditionally under-served, that is, minority and economically-disadvantaged students.

ASU Chinese Language Camp: From STARTALK to Flagship is a 15-day (July 12-26) residential program for Arizona high school students to increase their motivation and proficiency levels in Chinese through a highly individualized and task-based curriculum. The program targets students entering 11th or 12th grade whose proficiency level in Chinese ranges from novice-low to intermediate-high or who have no prior knowledge of Chinese. Throughout the program, students will receive Chinese language instruction in the mornings and participate in cultural activities in the afternoons and evenings. Chinese language classes will focus on communication in real-life situations and will be delivered through group lessons, individualized instruction, and peer mentoring. Cultural activities will focus on enhancing students’ understanding of Chinese culture and society. Students will watch movies on different themes, work on and present research projects on cultural and social issues in China, and participate in hands-on activities to learn traditional Chinese arts and crafts, calligraphy, cooking, and some martial arts. After the summer program, students will commit to taking follow-up Chinese language classes at ASU, their own high school, or CCSA (the Contemporary Chinese School in Arizona) with some online components.

ASU Chinese Language Camp: From STARTALK to Flagship 2012 offers a 15-day intensive residential program for motivated 9th-12th grade students resided in Arizona. This program provides a great opportunity for both heritage and non-heritage learners to explore and expand their knowledge in Chinese language and culture through a highly structured theme- and task-based curriculum. During the program, students will receive instructions in Chinese language and participate in fun, hands-on cultural activities. After the program, students will commit to continue studying Chinese. The program boasts a living-learning setting, where participants will gain first-hand college life experience. All evening activities are monitored and supervised by adult bilingual resident advisors who reside in the residence hall with students.
