The School of Education at Loyola Marymount University (LMU) is committed to responding to the state and national demand for highly qualified Mandarin language teachers by offering two pathways for teacher preparation. Pathway 1 is the Credential Program and includes the completion of coursework leading to a California teaching credential, Master's degree and bilingual authorization (2 cohorts of teacher candidates, 17 total). Pathway 2 is the Certificate in Teaching Mandarin in PreK-12 Settings, a hybrid program consisting of 12 continuing education units of credit (120 professional development hours) offered through LMU Extension (14 participants). Since our first StarTalk grant in 2008, 26 of our recipients have graduated with Master’s Degrees. Many of our graduates have taken teaching positions in southern California and throughout the nation and are "highly qualified," according to the national definition set forth in No Child Left Behind (2001).

The Chinese Guest Teacher Summer Institute (GTSI) offers professional development for newly arriving teachers from China, prior to their placement as visiting teachers of Chinese language and culture in elementary and secondary schools across the United States. The primary goal of the GTSI is to prepare the guest teachers to teach effectively in American classrooms through a combination of interactive sessions and hands-on teaching practice. The program covers topics such as the structure of U.S. K-12 education, K-12 foreign language teaching standards, communication strategies, course design, classroom management, materials development, and more. The GTSI is only open to teachers selected for the College Board Chinese Guest Teacher Program. This training program combines online and face-to-face workshop formats to provide training in language assessment. The purpose of the workshop is to help STARTALK program directors, instructors, and/or teacher trainers learn about and plan for assessment in their STARTALK summer programs, with particular attention to assessing language growth in short-term STARTALK programs. The program begins with online modules on the basics of assessment. The two initial modules are followed by a three-day workshop at the Center for Applied Linguistics which is followed by three additional online modules. The workshop content focuses on developing high-quality assessment tasks that are appropriate for STARTALK learners. During the workshop, participants will focus on developing authentic language assessment tasks and rubrics for their programs. Additional modules will focus on topics of particular interest to participants and build on knowledge gained during the workshop. This workshop is limited to staff from STARTALK-funded programs.

Learning to Teach Critical Languages from Best Practices

Running from June 1 to July 24, 2015, the FSU STARTALK program is designed to support two distinct sets of teachers of critical languages: approximately 20 teacher candidates in FSU’s School of Teacher Education; and eight early-career language teachers, who have experience teaching their languages at either college or elementary level. Teacher candidates will work with mentor teachers to co-plan, micro-teach, and co-teach in the program. For the teacher candidates, the proposed program will bridge the theory from the candidates' coursework and their practice through micro-teaching and co-teaching; for the eight mentor teachers, the proposed program will deepen their understanding of effective world language teaching practices and nurture their abilities as teacher-leaders. By the end of this program, teacher candidates will be able to use the backward design process to plan lessons that are contextualized and provide comprehensible input to students; meanwhile, the candidates will be able to use their reflections on the similarities and differences between the U.S. and their home countries’ school cultures to build appropriate relationships with students to promote a safe and positive learning environment; mentors will develop their skills of providing constructive feedback to teacher candidates.

This STARTALK program is for K-16 teachers of critical languages who want to teach their language online. Offered completely online, this 3-week, intensive course will give teacher participants the experience of being an online learner. Course content will focus on many different facets of a successful online language course, such as creating community, time management strategies for teachers and students, choosing appropriate technology tools for communicative-based activities, and developing a variety of online activity types. In addition to exploring these aspects of teaching online, participants will see these concepts in action in a model online language course. By the end of the course, participants will have a portfolio of activities ready to be incorporated in an online course. The University of Colorado's Program for Teaching East Asia will host a STARTALK program for 20 Chinese language teachers working in middle and high school settings around the US. This blended program will provide teachers with a thorough understanding of and practical experience with implementing effective learning technologies appropriate for the secondary Chinese language classroom. Based on the premise that the sustainability of both a program and its teachers increasingly depends on the teachers possessing skills and behaviors of a digital-age professional, this STARTALK program will introduce the theory, standards, frameworks, knowledge, and practice necessary for incorporating into the curriculum, with comfort and ease, a range of learner-centered technology tools. Program participants will work with language technology specialists, experienced Chinese language curriculum designers, and master teachers to gain a clear understanding of and competency in a variety of technologies around which they can create effective and engaging lessons. The program will consist of asynchronous online learning in mid-June, a residential institute in late June, and asynchronous online time in early July to complete a technology portfolio.

The 2015 Berkeley STARTALK Teacher Program offers 2-week online program (June 12-25) and 2-week onsite program (June 26-July 10; no weekend class). The online portion offers 1) reading, exercises, and discussions on National and State Standards, STARTALK Endorsed Principles for Effective Teaching and Learning, Chinese linguistics/pedagogical grammar, backward design, and using target language to teach; 2) Demo lesson critiques (using short lessons taped in mentor teachers classrooms and/or STARTALK Classroom Video Collections; 3) Unit and lesson planning in groups with support from mentor teachers; 4)a technology workshop introducing technology applications for the 2015 STARTALK Program and for Chinese language classrooms. The first week of onsite program will focus on reinforcing online learning with hands-on projects including, 1)unit and lesson planning in groups with support from instructor and mentor teachers; 2) microteaching using lessons designed in groups; and 3) an information session focusing on California Teaching Credential (licensure). This is a three-week, standards based summer program for teachers and aspiring teachers in Bangor, Maine. The program will overlap with the BCS student STARTALK program during one of its three weeks. This will facilitate articulation with the student program and enable practicum teaching experience with the STARTALK students, grades 4-12. The program will emphasize quality foreign language instruction through daily mini-lessons, a capstone teaching experience, concrete coaching with practical methods, and class portfolio management. Based on strategies and ACTFL standards in teaching foreign language, the program will concern itself with differentiated teaching, and curriculum development using best practices. University credits in "Educating Exceptional Students" offered will be applicable to teacher certification in the State of Maine. Teacher participants will learn the use of immersion techniques, how to stay in the target language, technology use in the classroom, standards-based, student-centered learning activities and effective assessment techniques. The curriculum will follow Maine standards with an introduction to national and international standards in language learning. Following the three-week program, participants will be given the opportunity to continue their professional development through workshops and professional conferences.

The Language Acquisition Resource Center (LARC) at San Diego State University (SDSU) will offer a two-week residential teacher training program for twenty three beginning level and five emerging (intermediate) level teachers (K-16). The program will be conducted at two levels to accommodate both beginning and emerging teachers. By the end of the program the participants will be able to effectively apply contemporary theories of second language acquisition (SLA) to their instruction; incorporate the principles of backward design; the five-step lesson plan; and ACTFL standards to their lessons and curricula. The five emerging participants will be given more practicum opportunity during the workshop. They will work closely with the Language Group Leaders in the morning to prepare materials and lessons. In the afternoons they will assist/coach the beginning level participants. The program will be offered via a two-week (80 hours) on-site workshop. Interested participants will earn three units graduate level credit and will be offered an opportunity to attend an extra 40 hours of continuing teacher education offered by the California World Language Project onsite, or online.

The goal of STARTALK Teaching and Assessing Chinese Culture and Language Authentically (TACCLA) is to improve participants’ ability to rethink their curriculum and instructional methods toward enhancing their students’ language proficiency levels while integrating elements of culture learning at the same time. This program will use the proficiency-oriented principles of language teaching, which are aligned with national standards. Participants will be able to better identify and enact the characteristics of culture in proficiency-based instruction, and the specific implications for curriculum, instruction and assessment for a U.S. classroom. This is a free residential program with limited travel allowance to offset the cost of transportation and limited tuition scholarship. The Seattle Public Schools (SPS) Startalk program will start a new Cohort 9 of nine teacher candidates on an alternate route pathway to teacher certification in the state of Washington. Certification coursework is provided by Pacific Lutheran University. Languages served are Arabic, Chinese, and Korean. Cohort 9 teacher candidates will take three, two credit graduate level courses: EDUC 544 Socio-cultural Foundations of Education, EDUC 556 Secondary Schools, EDUC 583 Exceptionalities. The returning cohort, Cohort 8, consisting of 7 teacher candidates, will take two courses: EDUC 561 Secondary Methods (4 credits) and EDUC 563 Internship Seminar (2 credits). Those who have not passed or taken the WEST B tests of reading, writing and math will also attend a workshop on tips for passing the WEST B writing and reading. Week 1 consists of certification coursework in preparation for the following two weeks of morning lab school. Weeks 2 and 3, teacher candidates will teach K-4th grade children Arabic, or Chinese or Korean in the mornings. Course instructors and teacher candidates will rotate observation and feedback responsibilities. Afternoons will be spent debriefing and taking additional certification coursework.

Hunter College Teacher Training Program offers graduate-level courses for pre-service and in-service teachers to fulfill partial requirements toward the M.A. degree and the New York State certification. There are 25 seats available. The program begins with a three-day preparation session followed by five weeks of teaching practicum that combines face-to-face teaching in the classroom setting and on-line tutoring via our live classroom platform. There will also be a workshop on task-based instruction and a seminar on proficiency-based teaching. Training will be conducted through a variety of activities, such as classroom observation and discussion, teaching rehearsal, student-teaching, teaching discussion, etc. Participants draft lesson plans, discuss them with the lead teacher and fellow participants, rehearse the lessons, teach them in a real classroom, and discuss the teaching afterwards. Participants may choose to participate with no credit, or may choose to earn up to 6 graduate credits over the summer, and an additional 3 credits in the fall semester. For-credit participants are eligible to receive tuition scholarship support if they complete course requirements with outstanding performance.

Principles of second language and immersion pedagogy serve as the framework for this graduate level course. This is a residential program designed for K-16 teachers of critical languages. Observation, participation in, and analysis of a variety of methodologies in action will help participants define their personal instructional philosophy. STARTALK teachers learn and practice: a) strategies for staying in the target language in both formal and informal instructional settings; b) formative and summative Standards-based assessments of students’ communication skills and cultural understandings; c) content-based teaching strategies; d) integrating culture into the teaching of language; and e) meeting the needs of diverse learners. Brandon Locke, dean of teacher development programs, is the program director and lead instructor. Jing Zhao, a Chinese immersion teacher, serves as co-instructor. Dr. Donna Clementi will also be a guest instructor focusing on instructional unit design and standards-based Integrated Performance Assessment model. The program is housed at Bemidji State University (Bemidji, MN) with regular visits to Concordia Language Villages sites. Participants receive room/board on the BSU campus. Four graduate credits are awarded for successful completion of the course. In addition, each participant will receive up to $350.00 to defray the costs of travel to Bemidji, Minnesota.

The STARTALK-CHELER Chinese Leadership Program is aimed at expanding the conceptual understanding and practical teaching skills of experienced teacher leaders of community-based Chinese heritage schools/programs in the United States. Participants will work in two cohorts, one for returning STARTALK participants and the other for those who are new to the program. The differentiated learning will provide opportunities for stimulating exchanges about principles of teaching and learning, lessons learned, and successes experienced. This residential program consists of three parts: a one-month pre-workshop online session, a one-week onsite workshop at the University of Toledo, and a post-workshop online forum. Participants will leave the STARTALK-CHELER program with new knowledge and effective strategies of developing student-centered, standard-based, and thematically organized lessons to build a learning community through technology. The STARTALK-CHLER program, including room, board and tuition, is free for qualifying applicants. Participants receive six continuing education units upon successful completion of the program.

TROY University offers a fun and challenging two-week intensive Chinese language camp for highly motivated pre- and in-service Chinese language teachers. Participants will live and study with experienced bilingual Chinese language professors and teachers from Confucius Institute and College of Education of TROY University. All participants pledge to speak only Chinese from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. each day with paired students. Participants study in a small class of 12 students each morning and engage in fun hands-on activities each afternoon designed to build language skills while introducing China’s rich cultural diversity to paired students. Participants will try their hands at Chinese paper folding, Chinese cooking, Dragon Dance, Tai Chi, Chinese traditional dances, and games. Each participant will join an on-line community to help stay in touch with their language partners after the program concludes. The program is open to all pre- and in-service teachers with near-native proficiency in the Chinese language and graduate level mastery of English for the studies of language teaching theories. All expenses during the two-week residential program are covered after the participants at TROY University. Troy’s gorgeous campus offers beautiful walking trails and a picturesque lake for everybody to enjoy outside of class.

In spite of the large number of Heritage Language Learners (HLL) in K-16 classrooms, language instructors in the U.S. are not prepared to teach them and few methodologies, curricula, or materials for teaching HLLs are available. This challenge is compounded in all STARTALK languages because they are less commonly taught and the teachers are often required to create their own materials. This teacher workshop is designed to help language teachers learn how to develop suitable materials for their students by focusing on instructional materials that answer the needs of HLLs. The workshop will be designed to impart the principles and methods of HL materials development. The workshop also aims to create a cohort of language teachers who will be leaders and mentors in the field of HL instruction. We hope that teachers who participate in the workshop will commit to re-teaching “lessons learned” at their institution or in their region when they return home. Advanced Course: June 29 – July 10: Prerequisite: 3 years teaching experience. Participants will develop an understanding of what it takes to become a leader, how to develop a vision of what good classroom performance is, how to communicate that vision to other teachers, and finally how to assist other teachers in implementing that vision in their classes. Participants will also focus on diagnosing difficulties, and promoting ways to manage the learning process. Participants learn to provide feedback and coaching to other teachers so that instruction is maximized. Technology will be an integral part of the course and will be used to gather data. Beginner Course: July 13 – 24: This course centers on a Chinese curriculum that is standards-based, infuses technology, and includes the latest philosophies of language teaching. Participants will discuss how curriculum needs to be created with a “backward design” model, keeping in mind that focused assessment is a key component of Understanding by Design. Participants will also learn techniques for helping their students become more proficient as they continue their language study. Teachers will learn elements of differentiated instruction and demonstrate their understanding by teaching a mini-lesson. Observation and reflection are integral parts of the course.

NOVASTARTALK is a face to face workshop that features standards-based instruction on the appropriate use of technology to teach World Languages in STARTALK programs and in the home institutions of STARTALK teachers. The faculty members of NOVASTARTALK are known or their expertise in technology-enhanced language teaching and learning. The focus of the workshop is the technology toolkit that each participant puts together over the course of a week of instruction. This toolkit allows the teachers to implement a similar program at their home institutions. There are two seperate NOVASTARTALK sessions with different applications and foci. Teachers are encouraged to sign up for week one if they have never been to NOVASTARTALK before. They are encouraged to sign up for week two if they are proficient in basic technologies or if they are returning to NOVASTARTALK after a previous workshop. Participants should not sign up for NOVASTARTALK unless they are able to attend from 9-5 for the five consecutive days of the session . The NYU StarTalk Immersion Training Program for Teachers of Chinese (1-6) for pre- and in-service teachers of Chinese is designed to give teachers an essential understanding of the theory and best practices of Chinese immersion and FLES education. The core of the NYU StarTalk Immersion Training Program for Teachers of Chinese (1-6) is the summer course “Teaching Foreign Language to Elementary School Children” (FLES), which is held July 6 - 24, with additional content designed exclusively for teachers of Chinese. Four fall workshops concentrate on Chinese immersion education. Participants may choose from 2 strands. The first strand offers a 50% scholarship to participants who wish to earn 3 graduate credits in FLES education. These 3 credits are required for teachers holding NYS Teaching 7-12 certification to receive the NYS extension for teaching in grades 1-6. Both strands will participate in a series of fall workshops focusing on Chinese immersion education.

STARTALK-Hawaii will recruit 10 talented pre- and inservice teachers of Chinese to spend 25 days in Honolulu, immersed in a program to improve how they teach Chinese to primarily secondary school learners, although the approaches may be adapted for other learners. The Teacher Training Institute runs concurrently with the STARTALK Hawaii Chinese Language Camp for 20 students, ages 12 to 17, led by four master teachers and one assistant teacher. During the first three days of the Institute, teachers will be immersed in theory and its implementation, through live instruction, demonstrations, experiential classes in which the participants become students, and feedback sessions. Instruction and discussions will focus on the STARTALK principles and incorporate TBLT (Task-based Language Teaching) and TPRS (Teaching Proficiency through Reading and Story-telling) approaches (teachers choose one strand for a focus). For the first week of the student camp, trainees will watch, dissect, and reflect on lessons taught by the lead instructors. Beginning in the second week, they will help teach. All lessons are critiqued using back channeling and in feedback sessions. Some segments may be video recorded. Teacher trainees will pay airfare and $500 towards housing. Tuition, board, excursions and materials are covered by STARTALK.

This program is a 4-week summer training and practice program from July 6-31, 2015 (no training on weekends). The targeted audiences are current and future Chinese teachers from public/private K-12 schools, teacher colleges or graduate programs, and heritage/community schools. Teaching experience is not required. Aligned with ACTFL standards and STARTALK principles, the primary goal of the program is to equip teachers with teaching skills and strategies that will enable them to teach Chinese with at least 90% use of target language. The program also includes important sessions on national standards, student-centered instruction, assessment, backward-design lesson planning, and teaching technology.
