Chinese • June 1, 2015-June 12, 2015 Scenic Park Language and Culture Camp, Anchorage, AK Our 2015 STARTALK Chinese summer camp will give up to 80 students in grades 1-8 the opportunity to experience and learn Chinese in a fun and stimulating environment. Activities will be based on the 5 C’s of the National Standards for Foreign Language Learning in the 21st Century and will incorporate authentic, integrated performance assessments. Students will experience Chinese culture and language through the study of the ocean in an “Under the Sea” theme. Building upon our previous “Wandering Panda” theme, younger students’ self-created pandas will “dive” into a deep-sea adventure. Older students will discover the sea by taking on the role of newscasters and doing research and interviews as real reporters would do. Chinese language and culture through best practices and meaningful, enjoyable activities that maximize time and engagement with the language. They will demonstrate increasing use of Chinese, understanding of Chinese, engagement with the language, love of the language and culture, and a desire to continue.

A Virtual Trip to East Asia: STARTALK Summer Programs in Chinese and Korean

This summer program provides engaging and stimulating language and culture learning experiences in Chinese and Korean to a total of 45 non-heritage language learners in 3rd/4th grades. In the four-week program, students will develop communicative competence and cultural awareness in Chinese/ Korean through the theme A Trip to East Asia. They will follow two characters on a trip to China/ Korea and learn to use the target language with authentic materials and in culture-rich contexts. Standards-based and thematically-organized curriculum will be developed and implemented by a team consisting of language teachers, graduate students and university faculty who are proficient in the target languages and cultures, knowledgeable about the US education system, and experienced in implementing world language pedagogy. Students’ learning of the target language and culture will be further reinforced through the use of technology and project-based learning in STEM.

The Program will collaborate with two schools in Houston Independent School District to recruit 2nd - 9th graders. Collaboration with Houston school districts has been a successful and effective model for STARTALK student programs from 2008-2014 (administered by Consortium of Texas Chinese Language Institute from 2008 - 2011 and Rice University in 2012 and 2013). American Bodhi Center will continue to utilize the strong and extensive connection with school districts and the community in Houston to promote the STARTALK student program.

.HEB ISD’s May I Take Your Order? will provide 3 weeks and 91 hours of student-centered learning and instruction in Hindi, Arabic, or Chinese to rising 6th and 7th graders, and intermediate level practice for 8th-11th grade students. At the end of this academy, we expect students to achieve novice level oral proficiency in their language of choice. The learning outcomes are based on the goals outlined in the World Readiness Standards for Learning Languages, the state LOTE and IB standards. To meet the novice and intermediate level proficiency, our students will engage in the target language to socialize and provide information. Cultural goals will be achieved when students demonstrate an understanding of some of the cultural practices and perspectives of India, China, or the ME. For example, students will explain the creation of authentic cuisine in simple Hindi, Mandarin, or Arabic and how these practices and perspectives may have changed over time. Resources, including technology, will enable students to use the language to make connections with other cultures and subject areas. Activities will enable students to use the language both within and beyond our school setting.

Students will learn Mandarin in an activity based camp under the instruction of CAIS’s own highly experienced teachers. No prior Chinese language skills are necessary to participate in this camp, but all participants must be entering between first and fifth grade in the fall. Children will be assigned by language proficiency as well as age to ensure that every child gets the most out of his or her experience. During each four-week session, students will experience Chinese language and culture through a wide variety of thematic units. Each unit provides a rich setting for learning, and purposefully connects related topics, content and skills. Students are able to apply all learned skills to complete real life meaningful tasks. Language acquisition will come naturally to your child as a result of their participation in immersion-based activities. More advanced students will be challenged to enhance their language skills through a more intensive level of interaction with teachers and other students. Our STARTALK Chinese Language Camp is a 3 week program that targets students grades 3-5 in the Tulsa, Oklahoma area. Our camp will be held at the University of Oklahoma Schusterman Campus in Tulsa, Oklahoma from June 15th - July 2nd. This STARTALK sponsored camp will begin at 9 am Monday - Friday and will conclude at 3 pm. The East Asia Institute and the Confucius Institute at OU is partnering with local elementary schools that are demographically diverse and have existing Chinese programs. Both EAI and OUCI work hand and hand to develop programs that support k-12 organizations and the community. The theme of this camp stems from our highly successful collaboration with our Beijing Opera experts from China. In addition to learning Beijing Opera stories and performing them, they will receive daily Chinese language instruction with additional stories and vocabulary that will enhance their Chinese speaking abilities. Students will learn to do taichi, kungfu, traditional dances, Chinese painting, calligraphy, mask making, and other cultural activities that will support their understanding of the Chinese language and culture.

Participating students will be those rising first through sixth grade students enrolled in the district’s sequential, content-related and Kentucky World Language standards-based Chinese language programs during the regular school year. The 2015 STARTALK Fresno Chinese Language and Culture Academy is a fourteen-day, 90-hour Chinese language and culture program offered at Hoover High School in the Fresno Unified School District (FUSD) during this summer. It is for students currently between 5th and 12th grade at school. The program will run from June 15 to July 2 from 8 am to 2:30 pm, Monday through Friday. The standard-based, student-centered program is specially designed for 60 students to learn Mandarin Chinese language and culture. The program will offer novice and intermediate level Chinese language classes. Students will receive 5 units of elective class credit. Students will learn and develop speaking, reading, listening and writing skills while gaining exposure to the products, practices, and perspectives of the Chinese culture. The STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) curriculum will be integrated in activities to learn the language. Students will use technology to become familiar with the target language and culture. The target language will be reinforced through painting, calligraphy, abacus, martial arts, craft, dance, music, Chinese chess, cooking, song, sport, and a field trip to San Francisco Chinatown. Students will be immersed in the Chinese language environment to develop an in-depth understanding of the culture.

Lewis University offers its four-week summer Startalk program to 30 rising high school and college students interested in learning Russian or Chinese. The program will immerse its participants into a culturally rich target language environment and will offer its students a variety of engaging activities under the umbrella theme "A trip to St. Petersburg/Taipei." Students will learn how to get around the major Taiwanese/Russian city, learn about places of interest, engage in basic conversation with "locals", conduct simple transactions etc. This non-residential program will run from Monday, June 15th till Friday, July 10th, Monday through Friday. Student will stay on the campus daily from 9 am to 2:30 pm (except on Fridays when school ends at 12 noon). Classroom instruction will be conducted from 9 am to 1:30 pm with 30 minutes lunch break at the University Dining Room. From 1:30 to 2:30 pm on all week days, except Friday, students will be involved in a variety of culturally-oriented activities that will require the use of the target language. The LMU STARTALK 2015 Mandarin Student Summer Immersion Program addresses the optimal age group for developing native-like proficiency in Mandarin in the early elementary/elementary grades. Through our partnership with Los Angeles-area Mandarin elementary immersion programs, our goal is to offer standards-aligned literature, arts and movement target- language instruction in Mandarin to rising 1st – 4th grade students. Both language and content standards will be highlighted in student learning outcomes. The 2015 program focuses on "Discovery through a Virtual Journey along the Silk Road" and will take place over two weeks. The program is based on ACTFL standards-Standards for Foreign Language Learning and Preparing for the 21st Century, as well as aligned with Visual and Performing Arts Content Standards and the vision behind the California Common Core Standards towards interdisciplinary instruction with language arts, social studies and Math. Concurrently, we will address the pipeline of teacher preparation and professional development through a collaborative effort with the Chinese Teacher Preparation Program at LMU. Teachers-in-training will observe, teach and be mentored by experienced Mandarin language credentialed teachers who will teach all classes in the program. University of New Hampshire (student) UNH Startalk Summer Chinese Program Chinese • June 20, 2016– July 3, 2016 The UNH 2015 STARTALK Chinese Language Summer Camp is a non-residential program co-sponsored by UNH LLC. Experienced language teachers will lead the camp's cultural and linguistic activities. Thirty-six students, in grades 5 through 11 will be divided into novice and intermediate accordingly to develop basic Mandarin Chinese language skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing) with a focus on simple and healthful Chinese cooking. In addition to intensive language/cooking lessons, students will participate in daily cultural activities that will reinforce language learning and a greater appreciation of Chinese cooking. Other cultural activities may include Chinese calligraphy, paper cutting, kite making and flying, martial arts, Chinese music such as the pipa, and erhu, ping-pong, and a field trip to Boston's Chinatown to do grocery shopping. Additionally, it will offer an optional online extension program of ten weekly classes for older students and an optional 20-hour face-to-face program of weekly classes for younger students. This is an innovative program from which they will gain an increased interest and understanding of Chinese culture and language. For the summer 2015, the Bangor Chinese School will continue to provide both new and tested teaching strategies and student learning experiences. BCS now offers to provide a year-seven of instruction and learning experience in which students will take part in standards-based, student-centered language and culture immersion, thematic organized learning with target language and advanced educational technology. Student assessment will be ACTFL standards-based and an emphasis will continue to be placed on meeting the needs of students with a variety of learning styles. All students will be introduced to and use LinguaFolio as a tool of self assessment. A three-week fast-paced program will serve 42 residential and non-residential students. These will consist of grade 4-12 students assigned to one of three language levels. The 9th annual OneWorld Now! STARTALK Summer Language Camp will be held June 22 to July 10 at Impact Hub Seattle in Pioneer Square. This program is for high school students only (including rising freshmen and newly graduated seniors) and is intended for students with no prior experience in the target language. Participants may choose between Modern Standard Arabic and Mandarin Chinese and will meet from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., Monday through Friday (including Independence Day). From day one, classes will be taught with little to no English. In addition to learning to read and write in a new alphabet, students will gain the vocabulary and grammatical knowledge to identify and describe a wide range of objects or activities in their daily lives. The program will also include cultural performances, art workshops, and field trips, as well as workshops designed to develop skills for 21st-century global leadership. Students will display their new language skills for parents and community members in a culminating Final Showcase. This program can accommodate up to 18 students in each language. Students from outside Seattle are welcome to apply, but they will be responsible for all costs associated with traveling to and staying in Seattle.

This is a three week non-residential Mandarin Summer Program to teach Chinese language and culture to middle school students (preferably 7th and 8th graders) of Chinese background who speak the language (any dialect) at home but have little or no ability to read and write in Chinese. Teaching will mostly address literacy in Chinese. The purpose of this program is to better prepare Middle School students for our high school Mandarin program. The cultural aspect of the program, which main topic will be Chinese-American history, aims at providing the students a richer perspective of their own cultural background.
